Heard about this a while back.  Seems Atlus JP is betting hard on the 3DS for the new generation (Persona team aside)

The biggest question is if they're just going to re-use the PS2 library of demons like DDS and Raidou, or if they're going to make entirely new set of 3DS demons to use for SMT4 and future megaten games.

I kind of think they're going to go with the former.  Though, obviously they'll have to trim down the models a bit since 3DS is weaker than PS2 in a lot of areas.

:lol  ::) No they won't - Nocturne hardly took advantage of the PS2.

Errr, it's not sprite based.  Count on that.

Sprites are expensive.

maybe they'll do it like EO4 and make 3D version of all the previous sprite's

there is bound to be a trick that's going to make this disappointing because otherwise the game wouldn't be for 3DS in the first place :spin

Magus, you're not getting it.

The "disappointing" and "being cheap" are that they're using the demons they made for SMT3 Nocturne and carried across all the PS2 games and reviving them on the 3DS to use in SMT4 (plus the new demons they make for it) and then in whatever future megaten games they do on 3DS.  PS2 will live forever.

The models are pretty good though, so I don't mind the re-use.  Hopefully the setting and environments are as impressive as is to be expected for a mainline SMT.  And the scope of the story, cast as well.

This is kinda a dumb attitude, as what defines a system's quality is often its, y'know, library.

edit:  Like I think the nes is a terrible system because almost all of its games have aged terribly regarding design choices.  The snes is still a good system because it has a nice library of stuff that still holds up.  It doesn't matter if its components are antiques or whatever.

i don't think it's dumb, since 3ds relies on its 3d, some people don't like 3d or even see 3d.

Who said anything about 3d?  If you wanna define the whole system as its autostereoscopic gimmick, that's your perception and your problem.

I'm gonna clarify that i don't think the 3ds is an amazing system yet, but if it ends up with a good library of games then its a good system.

Good thing there's a handy slider there.  The games play fine without the 3D enabled.  I'm not going to call it dumb to dislike the basic design of a system or its controller, or to lament a lack of general horsepower, but if tiesto were to offer up your reason you just listed here, I would definitely call that dumb.

I don't know its capabilities because i don't have one.  :P so sorry for my ignorance

Platform bickering grinds my gears and burns my buns, dude.  Like no other.  Like, where else would this game make sense atm?  Maybe psp, but right now the 3ds is the only platform that seems to have a future in japan.  I would probably be more sympathetic to maybe complaining about region locking.  If that what tiesto is objecting to, then ya, thats a bummer.

I'm not expecting a lot of Nintendo 3ds announcements this year.  Focus should be on wiiu, we'll get some clarification on NSMB2, Animal Crossing, Mario spinoffs and maybe Smash 3ds (trailer).

My concern is the likelihood of localizations from japan is dwindling these days and I'm not c.onvinced western third party publishers will magically start to give a shit about dedicated portables.  My best case scenario is some nice eshop announcements.  I'm purposefully leaving kingdom hearts out of the equation, btw.

Well honestly, I know it goes against a lot of people here... but I don't like gaming on handhelds for extended periods of time just because I find them very uncomfortable to hold, and don't like looking at the small screen for hours on end. Especially when I have a 50" TV sitting right in front of me. At least with the PSP or a PC you can hook them up to the TV, but you can't do this with a DS or 3DS or even Vita. I commute by car everywhere and don't travel nearly enough to enjoy the benefits of handhelds. Playing a handheld platformer for a half hour is much different than playing a handheld RPG for 3-4 hours, which is what I usually do with console RPGs...

Region locking on the platform is also a stupid move. Plus with the 3DS not doing so hot in America apparently and all the doom-and-gloom about cellphone games (the one thing worse than handheld games, at least handheld games have a workable control scheme) means that a lot of what I'm interested in may not even get released over here. At least with DS and PSP, I can import and scrape by on walkthroughs/the Japanese I remember from college without needing a new system... Sony totally had the right idea with PS3 being region free, unfortunately even 360 ironically enough has more interesting import releases :P

Also, I don't use the 3D when I've played on a 3DS, the gimmick doesn't appeal to me at all and gives me a headache :P But that's no reason to hate the system, I only wish that Nintendo used the system's extra horsepower to push better graphics instead of stereoscopic 3D.

Suck it up, princess.  At least this system can manage some polygons without puking all over the place.  Couldn't say that about the DS.

All at 240p resolution!

So awesome, when character faces become a giant bunch of dots since there isn't enough resolution to put in any detail.

I don't think the 3DS' 'modest' hardware matters in this case.  It's not like Monster Hunter or Kingdom Hearts or whatever game that could really benefit from better hardware.  Not that I don't sympathize with Tiesto.

???  Crazy talk.  Monster Hunter especially would benefit a lot from better hardware.  It's all immaterial though - 3DS is the most sensible home for this thing.

All I'm saying is, unlike the DS, polygonal graphics don't look like complete crap on the 3DS.  Not that I wouldn't like better graphics, but the 3DS is at least above the puke-line, unlike the DS.

True.

I just want my 480p PS2 that lives forever...on portables :(

3DS is region locked so that makes cool games getting issued on it extra fucking worthless, kind of like the opinions of someone with a goddamn squirtle avatar.

Also lolz at people who thought Strange Journey was SMT4.

Ehn, I mean, it technically *was*, at one point.  Sort of like how someday there will be an MGS5, but Peacewalker was still MGS5, and how Nintendo has some notion of doing a Super Mario Bros. 4 even though that's Super Mario World.

But in any case, most of the people pushing SJ as SMT4 were doing it because it annoyed the shit out of people who hated that SJ was on DS.

Yea I read on HG101 how SJ was going to be SMT4 but the reason they decided against it was because it didn't take place in Tokyo.

SJ was a great game but goddamn, I went for the human path and literally had to spend several hours grinding for the best gear and demons in order to beat the last boss.

I still want a Devil Survivor 2 Overclocked!

Honestly, the SMT series hasn't yet seen really good graphics so it's really no bother to me that SMT4 is on the 3DS. It will look right at home alongside the others in the series, especially the PSP remakes/PS2 Nocturne.

On the other hand, it definitely seems like Atlus is gearing up Persona for HD, with the Vita port, HD fighting games, Catherine...

It's so weird to see the color green and a fucking green plain at that, in SMT. That almost looks like a fantasy rpg if not for the bottom half of the pic, which looks more modern, standard, post apocalyptic SMT fare.

Think they had to delay SMT4 development because of the earthquakes?
