Honestly, I doubt even MS knows what's going on.

Basically it is this:

- WP8 released
- over 20 games got delisted from the WP8 store because they were incompatible
- some more games getting dropped

I worked on some of the infrastructure for testing and certification of Windows Phone games on XBLA last spring. Maybe I am somehow to blame for this  :o

anyway, the game is cool so far. The strategy is just beginning to open up. I guess one benefit of the long gestation is that the tutorial is SUPER polished. As is the art, music and animation but you knew that from the videos. What remains to be seen (at least to me, since i've avoided the previews mostly) is how involved the tactics will get and how fast it will play.

How is Cormacaroni-and-Cheese playing this before launch date? WTF! :maf

- did I mention MS porting Wordament with Xbox Live cheevos? They sure love developing for other mobile OSs
Oh, hey. Thanks for that. This was in today's Xbox.com newsletter, but the link made it look like a Windows Phone ONLY app. If you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have known to look for an iOS version.

I'ma make sure I have the cash to pick this up and 400/400 the shit out of it on release :punch

I'll play a bunch of multi and try and nab those cheevos but can always boost with Chronovore if I need to...

I replayed it from the start last night just to nail down the basics and am REALLY starting to get addicted. Got up to the first level where you get the Fox Monk, which has some fun jockeying for position on the board. It seems designed to be played fast so it really helps to internalize all the commands and have an intuitive sense of where you want the unit types to be (i.e. archers in shrubbery for cover or behind spirit walls, cavalry behind infantry...). The skulls/demon form mechanic can really swing things quickly, especially when you start chaining skulls and extra attack turns. Hopefully I'll have a mate or two over to try out local co-op today, should be fun!

Yeah, AW is a huge influence on it.

BTW not a lot of people know about this, but you have the ability to SAVE AT ANY TIME from the Pause menu. Helps a lot if you're going for the Gold Skulls.

Is it like Advance Wars?

I know you want it to be that (me too) but it is not. I think it's supposed to be played faster and with less premeditation generally. I mean, the broad strokes are similar obviously - it's a stripped-down tactical battle game with a cute art style. But it doesn't feel anything like playing Advance Wars so far, despite the influence. I spent a lot of time in Advance Wars thinking about the routes to take - in Skulls it's much more direct and obvious. Pick a direction and the big movement circle shows you how far you can move. Precise placement of units is less of a big deal because it's not on a grid (at least, not one visible to the player). Units will move out of the way when jostled, for example. This is all in service of it playing faster and more intuitively I think.

I had some local MP fun at the weekend - good stuff! We thought at first it was going to be a grind-it-out type game but there are some mechanics in there that will wipe you out pretty fast if you screw up.

The ledges worked to my advantage actually. But it was those zappy shrines that fucked me over - i'd never seen them before, Shawn got control of them, I couldn't get to the soldier shrine to haunt it and spend my strategic rice reserves...ball game. When I quit I had like 600 rice to his 75 :lol

Knock wood, I haven't been bit by ledges. I've been messed up by bamboo a couple times -- does the orange number mean "chance to hit" or "chance to miss" when targeting?

I love the UI -- interactive circles for move range, knockback range, whether or not a unit will counterattack -- but more than any of them, I like the HP shown on the retainer flags, including the buffs and damage.

If you're in bamboo, everyone has an 80% chance of hitting you -- UNLESS they are in the bamboo with you. A really good strategy is to knock people OUT of the bamboo and finish them off.

Also some of the trees have potions in them, the red ones give you health and the green ones give you an attack buff for a few turns. Buffed archers are :punch

yeah, the circles are very intuitive - they speed things up a lot.

I do find you need to sit closer to the TV than usual for a console game. Tablet is probably the ideal.

Yes, I found using RT to zoom intuitive, but not enough detail for what is actually happening when there is a cluster of units.

Xbox version is still 1200 spacebucks. Like Jake said, we knocked down the prices of the other versions because MS didn't have the systems in place to do a buy-once-play-everywhere.

Can play it on any Windows 8 machine, including Windows RT (Surface RT) and currently cheaper.

XBLA version holds 60fps most of the time and I like the game most with controller, though that's a personal preference. If you've got some sort of Windows tablet you'll want to get that version probably.
