Prepare to feel old.

Preemptive "you're wrong" to anyone who disagrees.  Feel free to discuss OK Computer's awesomeness, however.

I already responded to your Facebook post about this, but HOLY SHIT.

I remember buying OKC on release day and then listening to it and nothing but it while trekking around Finland, The Netherlands, France and England during that summer. Good times.

You forgot this:

Yep, the iconic southern rap album of the mid-late 90s that put NOLA rap on the map.  Without this album, Cash Money Records wouldn't have blown up in the mainsteam, which means that Lil' Wayne wouldn't be around, and neither would crap like Nicki Minaj and Tyga.

It's a great album. It's mentioned so much because it's so hard to classify and it's just so fuckin memorable. And to be fair, lots of great albums were ignored upon release. I doubt most Illmatic fans listened to it when it first dropped.

okay - so here's the deal - i've listened to OK Computer about 5 times and i think it's good but ...

.... the biggest problem i have with Radiohead is their fanbase (see also : Manic Street P.)

Now - this is probably more a -cumbrian- thing but fans of both bands were absolute nobheads and as much as you try to seperate the artistic work from the cockdribble fans sometimes it is simply NOT possible.

My taste in music is largely arse but if i had to pluck something out my ass that was ahead of OK C, Sugar - Copper Blue , My Bloody Valentine - Loveless, Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman, Boo Radleys - Giant Steps, Happy Mondays - Thrills Pills n Bellyache, Black Grape - It's Great When You're Straight... yeah, Massive Attack - Blue Lines, Portishead - Dummy, Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane etc etc etc.

Top and bottom of it is that the 90s were insane for musical output - it was easy to go without Radiohead or, at least, not be blown away by them as there were so many other amazing choices over them.

edit : jesus - i had to go back and double check whether Thrills, Pills... was the 90s and it JUST makes it in. 23 years old. God damn...

edit2 : hilariously here's what people were upset about in the early 90s - there were numerous calls to get the album banned because of "Loose Fit" - bonus point : can you tell why?

a couple of the right leaning papers were calling for the ban. Anyone else remember why? Doesn't seem to be anything on the internet about it so....

well, i find their music largely okay but it's not up my street (ho ho) and JR is a big fan so i'm careful with my distinction between Scumbrian fans and non-scumbrians ;)

Finally saw them in Seattle back in 2009. They hadn't been to the US in 10 years, and the last time they came through in 1999 it was 21+ show and I was only 18.

Went by myself because none of my friends had a clue who they were. Had a great time.

I've seen the MSP at um... let me see :

Liverpool Royal Court 1996
V99 Chelmsford 1999
Fuji Rock 2001

Again - i didn't have a particularly bad time but there's a distinction between "good band" and ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG. They're in the good band class, but i am still utterly baffled how they managed to elevate themselves beyond that. Again, i'm tainted by asshat fans too but i simply don't get it musically.

.... and now i'm depressed... i was 21 in 1996 :/ "Meeeeeeeeemorrrrrrieeeeeeees ... like the corners of mmmmmy miiiiiiiind...."

They're not my favorite of the mid-to-late 90s Britpop bands. That would be Pulp. Still glad I saw 'em, though.
