yup - i'm glad i saw them for sure.

Pulp were one of those bands that i think i appreciated after the fact

Also - this :

Massively underrated dark UK animated comedy + Cumbrian cartoon character + Pulp's Sunrise + spacehoppers with dicks ....

I really dug Mansun. Put out two stellar records before going to crap and then breaking up.

Would you rather they just hung around and put out crap records forever like say Marilyn shithead Manson? The quality to garbage ratio goes up more and more in favor of the garbage side the longer a band exists generally. I guess since my name is nails inspired I'm supposed to say TDS or Fragile is the best '90s album but there's so much cool shit from that decade that I don't really care exactly what is at the very top of people's lists. Could maybe try to argue Broken as the best Ep but Jar of Flie is also a '90s thing and fucking amazing to this day so welp!

well, it's an interesting one - everyone runs into the "bad album" at some point. No one needs to be around forever, but a good 3-4 albums worth of stuff should be possible.

Cases that jump to mind :

The Family Cat - released best album "Magic Happens" - then disbanded, reformed as two bands
Nyack - released great album - disbanded
Catherine Wheel - good album, great album, average album, poor album... disbanded
Gene - released great first album - rest turgid
Puressence - released good album, then incredible album, then great album, then average album, then good album...
Underworld - zomg followed by zomg followed by zomg followed by zomg followed by zomg ....
Orbital - zomg , zomg, great... , um what... ughhh... disbanded.... reformed with great album

So yeah - i guess the whole "tricky third album" tends to be the common thing but it's not entirely hard and fast.

Also - i was a huge NiN fan back in the day but i sort of fell of - TDS was okay, but FDS was the step that made me lose interest basically. Stangely enough - whilst i loved Broken and PHM the EP that really hooked me in was Fixed (of all things!)

I'm aware that's somewhat controversial but there was something about Fixed that i HATED at first but grew to really enjoy.

But yeah - the 90s is an insanely stupid list of riches in terms of music.

NiN peaked with Broken, PHM was awesome as well.  Once he had beaten his old record company and was successful it just took all the piss out of him.  Flashes of good stuff here and there but by and large since Broken it's been meh.

dubnobass is incredible - and has two of my favourite tracks by any artists -ever- back to back : Dirty Epic --> Cowgirl

Underworld are incredible - though as mentioned in the other music thread in a recent interview Karl mentioned "we can't live on Cowgirl ... the people clubbing today have never heard of it and we want to get back on the dance floor"

I made a pffffff sound and then looked at the date on Cowgirl.... #myoldballs .... so yeah... i actually wonder how much Underworld have left in them what with Rick being pretty sick and their branching into soundtracks and, wibble, the Olympic Opening Ceremony that they are running in conjunction with Danny Boyle (!!!!!)

First post nailed it AFAIC, but I might give it to "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" on odd days of the week.  Still gives me chills.

Also: Loveless, Wowee Zowee, Illmatic, Dummy, Mezzanine, Siamese Dream, Time out of Mind, In Utero, Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, etc, etc.

Not TOOL, not ever.

see i dont get this. I'm not exposed to other music fans (by choice) regularly so i'm not privy to fan bullshit, gossip and all whatever other shittiness you guys refer to. I love Tool's music, without whatever other bullshit is attributed to it.

Nah, I saw them in DC a couple weeks ago.  Couldn't get anything through WASTE, so we had to settle for seats opposite the stage on the other side of the arena.  None of us had ever seen them before or we wouldn't have even considered sitting so far away.  It's practically no different from paying top dollar to watch a concert DVD.

op is a pretty safe choice. not a bad one by any stretch. radiohead will never come to new zealand so i must leave.
i think i would probably choose laughing stock by talk talk though, it is perfect after all.

not yet mentioned but should be and honorably so:
-adventures in stereo - s/t
-tiesto said selected ambient works but also everything else by aphex in the 90s
-basic channel - s/t
-depeche mode - violator
-don caballero - what burns never returns
-keith - dr. doom/octagon
-gas - s/t
-gravediggaz - six feet deep
-odb - return to the 36 chambers
-primal scream - xtrmntr
-prince - emancipation  :shh
-rhythm & sound - showcase
-scott walker - tilt
-slint - spiderland
-smog - red apple falls/julius caesar/wild love
-studio 1 - s/t

musically the 90s were superlative but there's no point discounting any period of time. except the 40's, but that wasn't their fault.
thx

haha. it's not their fault! it was 1997!
it's still not as bad as most contemporary records.
if you're a fan of dynamic range you should definitely listen to Laughing Stock (full album first post this page)
thread has inspired me to listen to OKC for the first time in years.
thx

i don't know, i can usually listen through contemporary mastering standards or just terrible recordings to the songs themselves but yeah sometimes these things are definitely a hindrance to enjoyment.
what're your favourite, most dynamic albums?

i'm listening to exit music (for a film) now and it's actually fairly tolerable. but i remember that's it's gonna go totally square in about a minute.
thx

Re: 15 years ago, the best album of the 90's came out
« Reply #97 on: June 26, 2012, 09:20:32 PM »
all he means is that the album is uniformly loud which many consider to deliver a fatiguing listening experience.
when cds first came on the market the average volume of a cd was -18dBFS but by the 90's people were pushing it as close to 0 as they could. doing this necessitates a bunch of compression/limiting which decreases the amplitudinal difference between the quietest and loudest sounds.
albums with more dynamic range are often percieved as being more powerful because the "loud" parts feel loud. many contemporary albums are an assault from start to finish with no respite.
i wouldn't be surprised if most people these days are used to this to the extent that they expect and enjoy it.
thx

Homogenic>OK Computer

This is unpossible, because Post>Homogenic, and Ok Computer > Post
Homogenic was the better album compared to Post. Just my two cents.
I'd put Post on par with Debut.
