Summer plans?
« on: June 18, 2012, 12:04:51 AM »
What's everyone doing?

I'll be heading off to Miami for 2 weeks on Tuesday.  It's a vacation but I'm also helping my sister settle in for her surgical fellowship.

Miami wouldn't have been my 1st choice because of the humid weather but I guess there are worse places to spend two weeks.  The trip will be worthwhile if the Heat can have a championship parade when I'm there.

Lots o' workin' and probably not going anywhere particularly interesting! Might go to VT for a day or two since some family is going there for a month and a halfish. Suppose I ought to get some sort of exercise type deal going along with career type stuff.

Going to Baltimore in a week on my grand summer trip to the east. Got a 2 week contract there then its off to Lima, OH for a 3 week contract at P&G. Thankfully I'm getting payed well for both contract positions. Got to choose where I'm staying and the type of rental car I'll be using, and I get weekend's off which is awesome.

Then I'm off to Frisco Texas to spend sometime at 7-11 with my Uncle (he works in some capacity in their corporate structure) after that I'm gonna help my grandfather in Scottsdale, AZ with some remodeling to make room for a live in nurse as well as make his house a bit more friendly to him and my grandmother. I'll be in AZ for 3 weeks in total in the dead of summer at least they have a nice car there.

I'm also flying for the first time in 17 years, which is kind of crazy to think about. Cause that was the last time I ever went to AZ to see these grandparents.

Then its back to school and back into the pit fighting for a coop that will help take on some of my potential debt to cover my ass through my degree. I haven't made the switch over to a 4 year but in the next year I'll be making my move and the competition is fierce. And here I thought the job market was competitive, its got nothing on these coops and internships.

Work, saving up for return to school in the fall.  I would really like to travel (road trip to the west coast would be ideal with lots of stops along the way to see shit like Sedona, Joshua Tree, Red Rocks, etc) but I don't think I can afford it sadly.

Went crazy and scheduled 5 classes during the abbreviated summer semester. I've done 7 during regular semesters before, but this is a bigger pain in the ass.

Was planning a couple different trips to NYC, DC, and texas. But my decently paying internship fell through so now I have an unpaid one. May still make it to DC but I'm watching my funds pretty closely.

Other than that, been using the new boat quite a bit. Haven't gone fishing yet, but I'll post our catch in the fishing thread when we do

My condo renovations should be done in a few weeks, so basically moving in, setting up a game room, etc. Getting everything in order with the condo has been a huge timesink these past few months, so it'll be nice when I'm all settled in.

Other things:
-going to Otakon in Baltimore where I will be hosting a discussion panel on the DQ series
-beating Xenoblade and Trails in the Sky
-begin working out again
-doing a lot of biking, swimming, and chilling at the beach
-starting up dating again

and of course this:

My last day of work for the school year is Wednesday, and then don't go back until August 27th.

Going to Omaha to visit my wife's family next week, spending a weekend in Vancouver BC at the end of July and going on some cabin trips with our friends in August. The rest time I'll be home playing Mr. Mom with the kiddo.

Ain't got shit to spend on a real vacation after blowing two grand on Disneyworld last November, but my cousin owns a really, really nice cabin (which he rents out all year round) in Helen, GA, so the wife and I are going to use it for a few days and fuck around doing outdoorsy-stuff for our anniversary.

Apart from that, the fact that it's summer just means it's hot as shit to me.  Work, work, work.

Fuck yeah it is. There are 4 parks so plan a day for each park. Each park has a ton of awesome rides. There are even 2 water parks that we never got a chance to do.

Is Disneyworld worth going to?  How many days should I plan for it?

We went for five days and did pretty much everything we wanted to.  Some of the rides were impossible to get on, however- the "4D" Toy Story one was either booked up or the queue went on for 200+ minutes.

Disneyworld was not my first choice for a vacation, but my wife really wanted to go and she enjoyed it which is really all that matters to me.  I didn't like the hotel we stayed at (it was old, the bed was uncomfortable, they had shitty wired Internet with a 1" cable, and you had to use their bus service to get everywhere-- some park buses came like every 10 minutes, but others came once per hour.  Totally sucked.) and in what was obviously not any kind of surprise, found most of the parks to be too kid-oriented for my tastes.  Some of the roller coasters were pretty cool though.

Also opposite of the other parks was Epcot- if I was a kid I would have been bored out of my mind.  They had this international food festival going on with various foods and liquors from different countries, and beyond that most of the mini-country attractions they have there don't offer much.

Ate at some nice restaurants where service varied.  At one place the waiter turned his nose up at me after I told him I didn't want anything from the wine list.   :lol

Not a trip I'd do again without kids and I'd probably get a rental car.

lyte, I went to Epcot when I was little (probably about 8 or so) and absolutely loved it, but when I returned in New Years Eve 2005, thought it to be incredibly dated. Perhaps they improved since then... of course we didn't get restaurant reservations (I was looking forward to trying the Moroccan restaurant) so we had to eat the horrible fast food they had there.

Was never a huge Disney fan, I have a better time at Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure or Wet n Wild when I'm down in Orlando.

Epcots only really useful for having a group of friends and try to "drink around the world"

then you realized you spend over 100 dollars only on drinks and never go back

Smooth (anyone, really), as noted, go to islands of adventure. SERIOUSLY. it was FAR better than I expected. just make sure to get the fast pass dongle thing, if not the express pass. the lines were AWFUL. with the fast pass thing, you can check into any rides remotely. also, the harry potter part was um....pretty fucking awesome. kinda expensive though, was like $140 bux/ea for the one park/1 day. there is also an entry area that has clubs and bars that is open late, which was cool. we weren't drinking, but it looked fun, and I'd def like to have a night out over there.

just came back from a florida trip, hit up cassadega, universal islands, and daytona beach. two of three were awesome, think I may head back next year and do orlando again.

another trip to the lazy river planned for mid-july sometime, then 4 nights on navarre beach, followed up with 4 nights in vegas.

this summer :bow2

What about jet skis/fishing/snorkeling? Fun stuff to do around the keys area. And Key West is a cool town to spend a day walking around.

If you have more than one day for the parks, I'd pick one theme and one water park (if that's your thing). Blizzard Beach is probably the best in the area.

Could also catch a Marlins game in Miami depending on when you're there. I'm not a big fan of Miami so I'm not sure to do in the actual city
