I bought a PSP...Go!
« on: June 20, 2012, 08:40:51 PM »
$70 used at GameStop, the price is right to tide me over until a Vita drop. Like all PSP Go systems, mine was VERY lightly used. :-[

I fell off the edge of the PSP earth after Crisis Core - what's good to check out from the past few years?

Current list:
- Final Fantasy IV: Complete
- Trails in the Sky
- Gods Eater Burst
- Half-Minute Hero
- Tactics Ogre: Let us Cring Together
- Gungnir
- God of War: Ghost of Sparta

You need to hunt down :

FBA - this is your best port of call for arcade emu - Mame is painful. FBA struggles with some stuff but runs things like CAVE games like a good un!
CPS1/2 / MVS / NeoGeo CD emus - don't recall the name, all good - found the MVS emu a bit fiddly and , though you need someone with a CD rom set *cough* ahem *cough* and it works fine
Hugo - get your PC Engine on the go - full Hucard rom set is , like, 84 meg :O
Outrun C2C - old ... but... It's a magical adventure - he will ask you to go for a ride.... with him. 60fps mode with hackage.

I maybe able to slot together a convenient "pack" as i created a "template" mem card image with everything of note in one nice easy set up. All you have to do is copy it onto your card and it'll give you the good running stuff for FBA/CPS/MVS/C64/PC E/Megadrive/SNES (unfortunately not perfect) etc etc with all the crap culled out. However, it was on the drive from my now RIP PC - let me see if i can lazarus it and put it in a SECRET WEB LOCASHUN

nice guide on gaf: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=35038967&postcount=12594

Most of it is self-explanatory.  The temporary method means your PSP is legit until you run an application, which lasts until you turn off your system.  The permanent method means it's always 'hacked.'

for games, the three Ys games are all great.  Oath is better on PC if you'd prefer that version.

how recent, btw?

CFW I use is LME Launcher for 660 (shows up as '6.60 LME-1.6' under System Software)

I've played Oath in Felgana on PC. I played Crisis Core and KH: Birth By Sleep before I sold off my old PSP-2000.

Which Sting game is best? Gungnir?

Any NES/SNES/Genesis emulators?

Are the Ys games on PSN? If so 7 and Oath are well worth your money. Incredibly fast and frenetic action rpgs. Really fun.

Is the Third Birthday also on PSN? One of the best looking and controlling shooters on the system, but pay no attention to the terrible story.

People seem to like it. From my brief time with it I could tell that it was probably decent. The actual gameplay was still pretty decent and good.

I myself just couldn't get into the way more anime stylings, the new mission structure, and how the levels were laid out.

Have you played Valkyria 1? in wide strokes it's the same gameplay.  Smaller arenas, some refinement, etc.  The style is more animu, if you cared about the story and stuff from the first game.

There's a good demo if you want to try it out.  And I don't know if it's still up, but the bundle (game plus DLC) on PSN is cheaper than the game alone.

also, there's a sale for some Capcom PSP games this week.  Power stone, ultimate ghosts n goblins, and others are $5 each.  UGnG is awesome if you hate yourself!

A Go would not be the best thing for a 6'5" big handed duder like my self I'd wager, but non-Go PSPs start at $60 used at GS now. Tempting.

The OG 30GB Zune Prole gave me years ago finally shit the bed a couple of weeks ago, and I had been going insane working in total silence since, so I was already in the market for another mp3 player. A semi-decent 4GB Sansa is around $40. Thanks to Howard's heads-up, a game trade-in, and Sony's utter incompetence, I now own a white $60 16GB mp3 player which I can also use to play all those Minis and PS1 games my Vita can't.

BTW, also picked up the official Sony PSPGo headset with mic for $6 while I was there (dude had to look it up on the register and dig for it in the back, so ask if you don't see it - the one with remote music control is $10 but they were out of stock). They're decent earbuds, I think they were around $25 when they originally came out.

Ok, I don't think you would like Trails in the Sky.  It's great and Grandia-ish, but it's insanely slow and pedestrian.  You gotta stick through a lot of zzzzzzz to get to the good and then you do and it ends with a cliffhanger and the sequels aren't coming out in English.  It's a series that is 5 games long already, and you'll be lucky if game #2 comes out in English the next 5 years.  Unless you are OK with playing the future ones in Japanese if you like it I would avoid this for sure.

God Eater Burst is anime Monster Hunter with anime story/cutscenes and apparently it's not quite as good as Monster Hunter in gameplay.  I'm sort of curious about the game because I like anime stories like Tales games, but even I never went for it.  Doesn't seem like your kind of thing tbh, but maybe it is!

FFIV Complete is a good way to play The After Years, but impressions tend to be mixed on that sequel so I still haven't played myself.  I don't like the art in the FF1/2/4 PSP versions that much.  Good looking enemies, bad looking characters.

Half-minute Hero seems good fun for a few hours.

Tactics Ogre Director's Cut in the best freaking game ever.  So yeah, enjoy.

Gugnir is cool.

Ghost of Sparta is a pretty solid GoW.  It has a better story than GoW3 and the visuals are close to GoW3 in art direction just toned down.  Only disappointment is you only get 2 weapons total + sub weapons.

Other games I would recommend in the last year or two (since I remember you played KH BBS and didn't care for it):

-Ys Seven; great Ys game even if not as good as Oath.
-Import Valkyria Chronicle 3 (by import I mean import into CFW) - I haven't played it yet, but VC2 was pretty good just had a stupid high school setting and 2000 missions.  VC3 is older teen war story with only 20 or so missions so it's like VC1 with the imporvements VC2 brought like SKIP WATCHING ENEMY TURN.  Good srpg probably.
-Maybe Import FF Type 0 if you are curious to play an big budget FF trainwreck like FFXIII again.  The story is kind of cool, but it's a mess and the gameplay is fun but seriously fucking brocken and bad.
-I'd recommend checking out the Super Robot Wars series with SRW Z2-1 Hakai Hen.  It's a great srpg series, and Z2 is very accessible and easy for new comers to get into.  Has great animations, good music, and cool units.
-There's Persona 2 IS & EP if you haven't played either.  IS has crappy load times if you play off UMD but is fine on Go.
-Then there's older stuff like import Tengai Makyou 4 if you've never played it which is a classic rpg with a really excellent port.  Suikoden 1&2 is similar.
-Nayuta no Kiseki in July seems like it'll be a good Ys-esque action game that you'll want to check out.

Oh, you might want to play The Last Ranker.  It's disappointing in that it's not a great story/game and it never gains the battle complexity it should have.  But it's pretty fun rpg, looks nice, and it has moments where it's the best freaking shounen action rpg ever (some of these are the end battles).  Some really really good emotionally powerful 1 on 1 fights.  Plus it's pretty short at like 20 hours and the music is A+++ Shimomura.  It's a B-/C+ rpg that's short and fun enough with enough merits that it's still worth a play.  Script is by Nojima and Directed by Etrian Odyssey/7th Dragon's Niinou.

There's also Niinou's next PSP rpg which is Black Rock Shooter.  Duckroll said it was pretty bad, so even though I picked it up I never got around to playing it.

Like Rahxephon91 said, The Third Birthday has an insultingly bad storyline.  But the actual gameplay is a really fun and fairly deep arpg x tps hybrid once you get the hang of the controls and the combat system (it controls much better on Vita with 2nd analog for camera I hear).  Looks and sounds great and is about 5-7 hours long.  But the story is WOOOOOOW; like remember Bionic Commando and his wife was the arm?  Yeah, we're talking that level of plot writing here.

I enjoyed it a lot by the end (outside one or two frustrating parts that made me rage due to the controls).  But I didn't care about the story since I don't even remember PE1 and never played PE2.  So it's all just nonsense to me.

and I'm still surprised that Type-0 isn't out in english yet, I figured a 3DS port or something would emerge by now, but this is just baffling.

My guess on Type 0 (since afaik the English version is done and has been for a while) is that they're either porting it to PS3/X360 in HD COLLECTION form which takes a bit more time because they need to redo some assets and QA the whole thing again.  Or they're planning on putting it on Vita but they're waiting for the install base to build worldwide so the game doesn't tank.

They could put it on 3DS but imo it seems the least likely since the architecture is so much different and it'll take a lot of work with no guarantee it'll do well in the west since 3DS sales over here kind of hmm

Guitarooman's a bit fudged due to the horrific squishing of the aspect ratio making it a little trickier for the vertical button press things, but STILL an epic game. Finished on all difficulties, great music too.

CPS1 works too, but the CPS2 slim emu does not load.

EDIT- regular version works, but that means you have to use the ROM converter to generate cache files.  Takes up more space and loads slower.  Seems to apply for some Neo games, too.

yeah, that's why the Go kinda sucked before cfw.  Nice hardware and all, but expensive and it's limited compared to the other PSP models.

My favorite Go specific feature is suspend play.  It's great and I wish the Vita or 3DS had something similar.

maybe? It's the second option when you hit the home button.  It saves the game state.  You can play another game or power down the system and then instantly resume at that point you stopped at.

ok, so it's officially called the 'pause game' feature.

I dont no what your talking about about being used because i never used it

loose thats the way they feel  . If it had any marks on it it was just
because that something in the drawer stratched it ! I am a hounest person

I'll never understand why people won't take the thirty seconds to clean off something they're selling. The Go I bought had some grime on the nub, too. Took about five seconds with a wet rag to wipe it off.

FLASHBACK:

I bought a GameCube from a former poster here a few years back, this is what the controller looked like when I got it:

Jesus Christ how can anything get that dirty?

Anyway, I know my standards for conditions of shit are exceedingly high, but "perfect" has a fairly universal meaning. Even if he is telling the truth about not using it and keeping it in storage, he should have made note of all the scratches.

You should see my used Saturn.  Controller has bite marks.  Human bite marks.

I don't think I ever used it.

Should I just give up and get a 3000 instead?
Unless you have a large collection of UMDs, you're better off getting a Vita.

Waverbird gets unnaturally gross for some reason.  I had to double check that Eel wasn't posting mine.  It's like how old PS2 controllers get all goopy under the sticks over time of non-use.  Wavebird just dries up into rust.

The real question is how did he get that much grime on the D-pad? That thing should be pristine.

What do you use your hacked PSP for? I can only get half of my PS1 images to run on it properly and the screenshot function was neat, but not gamechanging.
