im always kinda weirded out when people are like 'he did all these good things'- like that builds up some kinda credit you can spend on horrible things.

Oh man, you were still on hiatus during the whole Roman Polanski thing, weren't you?

Yeah, last time I checked being a good guy and doing lots of good things doesn't really keep you from going to jail if you knowingly commit some horrible crime.

Maybe they just removed the Paterno statue so they could add that to the plaque.

Yeah, I think someone came up with the idea of "Celebrity Scandal Offsets"- stuff that celebrities could earn to get them out of troubles or whatever, kind of like Al Gore buying carbon offsets so he can travel on a jet or whatever.  Like, Chinatown apparently will allow you to anally rape a 15 year old against her will.  Meryl Streep probably has some sort of hideous sex dungeon we can't even fathom where she uses dead frozen kittens as sexual devices or something, but HEY 3 OSCARS WOOOOOO!

With the wins from 1998-2011 vacated, Paterno drops from 409 wins to 298, dropping him from first to 12th on the winningest NCAA football coach list. Penn State will also have six bowl wins and two conference championships erased.

As a life long fan of PSU football, this sucks. But, it's well deserved. It's going to be weird to not have a favorite college football team to root for anymore. I don't even have a 2nd favorite.

I'm going to have to buy a new hat.

No wonder they took the statue down; who want to have a statue of the 12th winningest coach?

Some people are dismissing the win erasing but that's quite a demoralizing blow to any franchise, especially one as hallowed as PSU football. As someone who grew up watching the Fab 5 and loving those players, having all those wins erased by the NCAA was quite depressing to me at the time. The memories remain, but it's weird going to the stadium and not seeing the banners you once saw as a kid; it's a never ending stain on the program. Good move, and even more welcome considering some of the batshit stuff PSU alumni have been saying over the past few months.

The scholarship loss and bowl ban will effective kill recruiting for more than the four years it's in place.

It's also worth noting that while PSU is a storied franchise, it's never been a recruitment capitol outside of local talent. USC managed to rebound from somewhat similar sanctions because kids are always going to want to go there; great location, great facilities, etc. High school kids basically just waited for the sanctions to end, then flooded the program again Same with OSU to a lesser extent. But PSU? Happy Valley is no Southern California. This could effectively kill the program for a decade

Nah, it's okay, he retroactively retired from Penn State back in 1998.

First high profile PSU player transfers. Ironically to USC
http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/ncf/story/_/id/8219810/silas-redd-spurns-penn-state-nittany-lions-heading-usc-trojans

From one condemned program to another. Of course, giving players money and hookers under the table>hiding a pedo. But it goes back to the idea that USC rebounded pretty fast in part due to it being one of the most appealing schools in the country, whereas PSU isn't. I think they'll be fucked for awhile after the sanctions lift. Especially with the shift in Big Ten power recently as MSU has become a consistent good program

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8240385/penn-state-nittany-lions-trustees-file-appeal-federal-lawsuit-denial

Quote
At least four Penn State board of trustees members intend to file an appeal Monday afternoon with the NCAA over sanctions levied against the university after the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal because they say the NCAA did not give the school due process in meting out its punishment.

Trustees and a person with first-hand knowledge of the discussions said the move is a precursor to a federal lawsuit that will ask a judge to invalidate the sanctions, because trustees expect the NCAA to reject the appeal.

The trustees also are trying to determine whether university president Rodney Erickson had legal authority to sign a consent decree agreeing to the package of sanctions -- a $60 million fine, a four-year bowl ban, scholarship losses and the vacating of wins from 1998 through 2011.

At first, I kinda saw the justification to not give a full-on death penalty, but now...

Penn State administrators should have been given the death penalty.

The book also indicates Paterno didn't comprehend all the terms in the report, asking his son what sodomy meant.

Bullshit, of course. Sounds like the family is trying to use this book as a last ditch effort to salvage Paterno's boy-rape enabler reputation.

"He's done what?"

"Sodomy."

"Like what goes on the sandwich?"

Yeah, that's believable.  Fuck off Paternos.

Maybe Paterno was confused because he was old enough to still remember when Sodom was a nice place to raise a family.
