bloody noses
« on: June 30, 2012, 11:36:52 PM »
I've been getting these for years. Almost all of them in the shower, sometimes with spicy foods, sometimes just randomly. It's 99% of the time the same nostril. My dad had them apparently all the time at the same ages and still had them quite often into his 50's or so.

They don't seem to be anything other than annoying. (Or at least that's what they want me to think.)

I have wondered about having it cauterized, anyone here have that done?

Supposed to be relatively simple. My pediatrician mentioned it way back in the day so I assume it's advanced past heading down to the local steel mill to get a few jabs from Local 254.

Feel free to use this thread to discuss any bloody discharges. Or anything you'd like to do to nostrils.

I used to have random bloody noses a lot, but I haven't had so many in the past few years.

I had mine cauterized. Still have issues but not full on bloody noses like I used to. It was just a chemical matchstick in your nose. Although I smelt burning flesh for quite some time  :-\

My little sister used to get terrible nosebleeds all the time. One time it just wouldn't stop so it had to be cauterized, and she's been fine ever since. I'd say go for it.

Had this done to me a few times now. It sucks but its the only thing that stops me from having bloody nose attacks. The scar tissue doesn't seem to hold back the bleeds sometimes. But I had success this last time cause it was done with a laser.

I never never had a bloody nose until one day in winter a blood vessel in my nose burst just as I exited the school bus. The blood was streaming out of my nose as if somebody had opened a faucet in my head. I procedded to spray the schoolyard, a bathroom and the school office with blood. After I got first aid, I had a blood ball the size of a fist in my mouth. I think I was never as terrified in my life as in that moment. A doctor than atrophied the vessel and I've never had nose bleeding again.

Used to live in a very cold, dry climate and would get them pretty oftern, also had BP problems at the time that probably didn't help.

Don't get them anymore though.

i've had my nose cauterized and while it worked for a good few years, my nose is back to being an unpredictable bloody mess during season changes and going from humid to dry/ac conditions. i'm pretty used to it by now though the most embarrassing moment was when in the midst of running to catch my flight at Geneva airport, my nose just deiced to start pouring blood so i rushed to the closest bathroom and the employees of the duty free shop were laughing at me while using their hands to gesture that i had done too much coke. ten minutes later, they're announcing my name over the intercom, i rushed out of the bathroom bloody nose and all and made it to the very end of the terminal just barely making my flight. the one perk is that they did upgrade my seat out of pity after seeing the mound of bloodied toilet paper covering my nose.

Any chance you've got a deviated septum? Having that can dry your nasal passageways and turbinates to the point where both nosebleeds and increased reaction to allergens is nearly automatic.

Yeah, I do actually.  :-\

I've tried a humidifier but it didn't seem to do anything.

It's about how the air travels through your nose, and allowing your membranes to do their thang. If you've got insurance, you can get yo'self knocked out and have the septum re-seated. I did it; it helped a lot.

Used to get maaaaaaaad nosebleeds as a kid and in my teens.  Pediatrician told me it would probably sort itself out eventually, and it did for the most part in my early-mid 20's.  Seems to have come back in the last couple years, and had a stretch this spring where I bled at least once daily (which is weird, cause for me it was always worse in the winter).  Ditto it always being out of the same nostril, though that too is different from how it used to be.

Gonna talk to my doctor about this, but don't want to fork over ~$150 just to ask.  So now I'm almost hoping I get sick so I have an excuse to go in.

If he recommends surgery or a new superdrug I'll ask him if there's a group discount and see what sort of deal we can get.
