Of course you will have to pay,Sony has to pay for maintaining the network, bandwidth, etc. But that is not a real BC anyway.
Real BC = stick your old disc into next gen console, done

I see streaming as a pretty nice option--whole PS1,PS2,PS3 library at one button press.
Not to mention that any game could have an instant trial--maybe you could even choose the chapter to try.I wouldn't be surprised if things like that were PS+ features, though.

Did you write this?

Sony will rule the living room now. MS, Nintendo and Google will have a hard time. Sony Gaikai will be on Bravia tvs and Sony bluray players, they will be branded as "PlayStation certified TV". With Samsungs Gaikai deal Sony will have the biggest TV manufacturer in his pocket too and I expect similar deals with Panasonic.

Playing games on your tv without the need for a console will be huge in a couple years.

Some unrelated gif, that almost made me spill my drink.

It's good they didn't drop $500 million for this like Gaikai valued themselves at. Though that was probably just a tactic to try to get Sony to bid more.

>$18 billion in debt
>buys companies

It's not exactly like Sony's in the closing down phase. The company has money.

Look it from the bright side,Sony could be bankrupt long before this cloud shit takes off(if it does take off, still have my doubts).

Yeah, streaming will likely make exclusivity more important to hardware companies than it ever was in the past. I'll bet you might even see one or two of the big publishers try to do their own streaming thing.

It's a good match-up for Sony, Gaikai has better latency than Killzone 2.

Pretty much. Also COD LIVE™ or somesuch, although that's probably the worst type of game for streaming.

There are a couple of bright spots with streaming. Gameplay of TBS games, certain types of RPGs, certain puzzle games, etc, won't really be affected at all by the lag streaming introduces. So there's that. Companies will be more keen to having a large library available, so there's that.

It'll get better as time goes on. As I've written before, a year or so ago we did an Onlive thing for The Cruncheons, and everyone generally had a pretty shitty experience with it. A few months ago, though, Time Warner boosted up the speeds in my area, and I gave Onlive another shot during their "$1 for any single game" Facebook promo. I bought Red Faction: Armageddon just to see if the speed boost made a difference, and it did. Not optimal, there was still a bit of pixelation and the lag was still noticeable, but it was playable, whereas before any game requiring quick action had been pretty much unplayable for me. I don't think anyone will ever really perfect it (too many variables), but it may hit a point where performance becomes acceptable, particularly if games are tweaked to compensate for lag (sort of like analog stick aiming has been tweaked over the years).

I don't care for it much, but I don't outright hate it.

A cloud gaming future will be the end of my interest.

Not in our lifetime(if ever),way too many things against it.I see it as a nice option, nothing more.Total cloud future could possibly mean the end of (expensive)consumer electronic.
Just buy a bunch of dumb cheap screens able to decode video and communicate with cloud, done.I bet big players would have a lot to say about that.*

Internet bandwidth is an another issue,Gaikai needs like 2GB per hour for 720p(not my data, someone at gaf measured that, correct if necessary). And it needs that at steady 500kB-1MB per second for normal operation.

One million simultaneous users for 1 hour  gives you (2x10^9 Bytes x 10^6 users)/hour...more if you use proper numbers(1024 dammitt  :maf)

Tons of bytes to transfer at a steady rate, just for one game.

*Cloud streaming at home is something that I would like to see.Buy one quality device, put it in some nice cool basement and stream to a bunch of dumb screens--minimal lag and dependent on your electricity supply.I wonder why nobody has thought of that yet...**

It will be a lot smaller resolution and scaled up by your display. Like how Netflix does it.

Sure, but upscaled compressed video(that is Gaikai)  is :yuck

This is kinda like situation with small gifs, they look great but when they are stretched to big screen...not good

Dunno, maybe the future is to play games on small devices but then again old people and  small things(blurry stuff) do not mix well.

Yup, I like purchasing a game (either new or used) and not having to worry about shit like online passes. I want to know that if, 20 years after a game is released and I want to play it, it will still work.

That's a reason I shied away from Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 on PS3.  It uses Capcom's online activation DRM, or something.  (wait, I own Diablo 3.  What's integrity?)

Gaikai, Onlive, streaming games, etc. I'm not against it, though I'm definitely not for it, but as of yet none of these companies have given me a reason to care.  Actually, EA made the PC demo of Dead Space 2 only for Gaikai, so I'm more against it than for it, I guess. 60/40.

Cloud future :bow2 I'm down with it in concept, and once everyone's got direct fiber to their doors with uncapped bandwidth it's not a ridiculous concept.

Mmm.. In NZ the government has put in place an initiative to have it done by 2015 or so. And as long as major centers in places like America have access to it that's a sizeable market.

Wow, are you short-sighted.  Maybe not in the immediate future, but not in our lifetimes?  Considering how fast the Internet is evolving and how far cloud computing has come in just the past few years with more devices and features dependant on it?  I'd expect something like this to be feasable within the next 5 years.  You can still sell expensive shit while still using the cloud.

Will be easier to do in somewhere like NZ over Australia/USA due to the smaller distances.

But as an image quality/resolution whore this whole streaming thing disturbs me

I tried out OnLive with AssCreed... Brotherhood I think? It was a lot more responsive than I thought it would be (still noticeably not "native" though) but looked like a 360p YouTube video most of the time, other times it was like 240p. Google Fiber needs to go national before I start getting excited about cloud gaming.

Maybe, but I think there are just way too many things against it,most important ones are not technical in nature.

Oscar said it nicely, there are some big players that don't want you to have uncapped bandwidth. And what about governments?
It's just a matter of time before they start clamping shit left and right.

Multiplayer gaming is laggy as it is right now, online required single players games are laggy too(lol Diablo 3).You can also forget about 60 fps,Gaikai renders at 60fps trying to deliver 30 fps to users.
