Do any of you all still prefer physical books?
« on: July 06, 2012, 04:50:15 PM »
Even though I've been a huge fan of the Kindle, I do find myself still prefering physical books.  Though they are a pain to move, I've found myself buying more paper books of late.

Although the Kindle is great for shame reading like Fifty Shades of Gray.  :-\

Comics are fine. But if it's a real book, you need the tactile response of the pages.

The Warhammer 40k digital story is kinda weird/unwieldy so I still buy those in physical format.

Ya, but reading PDF's on monitor sucks and printing them sucks more.

I still don't own a good e-book, so for what I have now, real books are still better.

Especially manga, nothing I hate more than reading manga on a monitor or ipod. I never understand how I see so many people who are able to do it.

If you still prefer physical books you need to buy a better eReader.

Books are theoretically cool but I don't have space for everything I read. Digital books work well with my slimmed-down profile.

I like physical books. I like CDs. I like 7" singles. I like buying games at retail.

I'm a dinosaur. I rock.

I do, but I imagine if I read more I'd probably like an e-reader better.  It's just not the sort of purchase I can justify, even at an otherwise el cheapo $99ish price point.

The only books i ever read are technical manuals - the MVS/JCL / COBOL manuals alone are absolutely massive and as a result stay at home

I really should get an ereader so i can snaff digital versions

i actually bought a book on the iphone 4 and read it just to see if it was doable. i didn't mind the small screen. thinking about switching over.

on the other hand, for all my textbooks, i love having the actual book and will pay extra for it even if i have the online copy free through the school. weird

Yup. I can't fuck with e-books, can't wrap my head around it. I've used my dad's kindle before and wasn't impressed

I prefer physical books. Although, I do enjoy reading journal articles on my iPad. I keep them synced though my dropbox account though, iTunes can go suck a dick.

Shorter stuff, not really.
ebooks syncing across devices is handy for longer stuff though.

I like print.  I've had a Kindle  for a couple of years but barely use it.  I never bought a book on it, only free stuff.  I have lots of physical books and am still buying more.

on the other hand, for all my textbooks, i love having the actual book and will pay extra for it even if i have the online copy free through the school. weird

I definitely like having reference books in print.  Digital versions allow better searching though, so a combo of both is ideal.

I prefer real books to digital books but to be honest I prefer audiobooks over either by a large margin.

I keep buying physical books because I've yet to buy an eink reader for myself, but I know it's more convenient and comfortable.  I'd say I prefer digital, I guess.  I'm only slightly nostalgic for page turning and the book feel.

For textbooks I need to reference, I prefer a physical book by a long shot.

I prefer real books to digital books but to be honest I prefer audiobooks over either by a large margin.

I've never listened to an audiobook before.  Was thinking about looking into it earlier today, actually.  Probably better than podcasts or music when running or w/e.

I read 2-3 books a week so I vastly prefer digital.

Most of my reading is done at the gym - a lot easier to read the Kindle App on the iPhone or iPad while running than a physical book.

I read a few pages here and there during walks between buildings on campus (or during boring meetings :teehee). With a physical book, it's back at my desk or worse, at home.

I respect the book as a fetishistic art object and I love the hundreds I have at home, and I still trawl used bookstores for cool out-of-print finds. But if a book is available digitally? GET ON MAH KINDLE.

Yes, but mainly because the books I tend to read haven't had digital version in the past so I haven't bought a reader.

That's talent.  I could do it walking with the ipad but forget running with an iphone.

I'm not exaggerating when I say audio books kinda changed my life. They rekindled my love of "reading" at a point when I thought I didn't have time for it anymore. It's a bit of an adjustment period at first having a book read to you instead of reading it yourself but its alot more flexible. I got to bed every night listening to something or on long car trips.

Yes, especially picturebooks/coffee table books... though moving all of these is a pain in the ass! Even though I work in a high technology industry, I'm pretty much a dinosaur with a lot of stuff... don't even have an ereader yet and it took me up until last year to get a smartphone.

I wouldn't pay full price for a paper book, but sometimes I buy used ones from HPB or various used bookstores. Also if it's a reference book or has a lot of illustrations (*cough*comic books) I'll buy a hard copy.

I got the latest kindle.  I guess I love the whole shelves filling and collecting thing.

But I also live in a small apartment, so I do buy more shit on Kindle overall, but I was browsing an old bookstore and if just reminded me how much I love ''real'' books.

I went though a huge ebook buying phase and now  I'm buying a lot of used hardcovers lol.

Only bought one book since I got my Kindle, and that was only so I could get a first edition hardcover that I was planning on having signed (which I did get signed at WonderCon).

Only physical books I buy now are comics, and if they're Marvel and come with a free Digital Copy I'll file the physical copy in a long box and read the digital one on a tablet or phone.
