Lactose intolerance
« on: July 13, 2012, 01:30:31 PM »
Anyone here have this? Thinking about going to the doctor to see if I do. I don't really know anything about it but I had some ice cream last night and today my stomach has been awful. And now that I think about it, I think its happened the last few times I've had some ice cream. Just curious to hear if anyone has the real condition and what it entails.

It sounds like you have lactose intolerance.  I have it a little bit myself.  I can eat mostly any dairy product as long as it's in extreme moderation (i.e. a bowl of cereal with milk and a little bit of milk in my coffee would be all I could do in one day).

You can get lactase pills from your local pharmacy which will more or less eliminate the symptoms.

When I had problems as a kid, my doctor had me stop eating dairy for 2 weeks. Really no tests they could give besides time, so I would suggest a trial run before you go to the doctor and track the results. By god, I felt 100x better by the end of the 2 weeks, but I missed cheese too much and lied to the doctor and my mom. "No, I feel the same..."

Now I'm off regular dairy again for the baby, because she was already having problems with it. As soon as I went off it this time, the swelling in my feet went away and I had energy for the first time in months. Even my allergies are better. I feel 100x better again, but the Dairy Queen commercials... :( Haven't gotten ice cream from there in months, but now that I can't have it, I want it.

This sounds bad but my outside image of Lactose intolerance was something girls had and whiny men. I know that's stupid but that's what I thought secretly. The way I've felt today, I realize that shit is no joke.

It's a lot more common than most people think.  It's just extremely mild in some cases.  I have it slightly.  I get an upset stomach if I consume any dairy products but it's not bad enough for me to stop.  And I don't consume enough dairy products for it to really matter.

Cheese makes me retch, and last time I had a Wendy's frostee my stomach was twisting in knots. So I'm pretty sure I have it. Kinda sucks when you are Italian...

I have it a bit, mostly occurs when I eat a bunch of cheese.

But I'll stop eating pizza when I'm dead.

Southeast Asians also suffer from seriously bad motion-sickness, which is why they only eat rice before a bus journey or playing FPS's.

This has always bothered me. 1000's of years ago, a white person saw a cow's young-ins sucking on its teat and thought: "I need me some of that!"

I feel shame for my people.

Yes.

At the time when I was diagnosed with it, the alternative at the time was acidophilus milk.  I never really felt better while drinking it (it turns out it apparently doesn't do much good for you if you are intolerant) so I just cut back or eliminated dairy products.  However I grew to be a fat ass with poor impulse control so I'd eat and drink dairy and dairy products, feel sick, and then do it again.  When I was experimenting with Paleo diets, I tried to drink organic whole milk and it didn't take.  I am fine with yogurt though.

The only real solution is to cut back or eliminate it the best you can.  There are times when I feel like chugging a half gallon of slightly cold 2% milk but I hold back.  I think soy and almond milk taste terrible so I wouldn't consider those good solutions.  Your tastes may differ though.

I like soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk...etc. but I don't see any of the above as alternatives for cows milk.  They all have their own flavor profiles and are unique in their own way.  It's like how people keep trying to make meat alternatives out of tofu (usually turns out horrible though tofu itself is an excellent ingredient).  It's fine as a way to get calcium into your system, but in terms of flavor it doesn't work.

chocolate soy milk is god-tier. get some chocolate cereal to ease yourself into it.  ive been on soy milk for so long now that it doesn't have that cardboard aftertaste that it initially had, and cow milk tastes sour and disgusting to me.
