I'm up to level 18 now and haven't died once. It's nice to be able to find loot that is an upgrade regularly. I also found what looks like a gimp hood.

But I don't see there being much reason to keep playing past finishing the "story". But then it's not like Diablo 3 has much of an incentive to keep playing either unless you count farming.

oh, don't get me wrong - i love hot loot, but i seemed to get a 181 damage cannon and a 178 damage pike in the first 2 hours and now i'm happily drizzling hot death spuzz on heads from a great height.

Which is fun for sure, BUT....

Nope, not yet.

If you've played lots of arpgs, it's easy to faceroll by min-maxing. They give you lots of loot and lots of ways to modify it, which is something I love. Found an awesome gun that's not magical? Enchant that fucker! Didn't get the cold damage you need because you have 22% extra cold damage? Pay to remove the enchantments and do it again! What's that, no socket on that awesome gun you finally got cold damage on well we can fix that fuuuuuuuck yeah we can.

One of the first weapons I got was a two handed axe that had 4 sockets and no other stats. The variety of loot and matching it to play styles is what I'm enjoying the most here. It's much more enjoyable than hoping to get a drop with life on hit and the right stats, since you can never afford one on the AH due to farmers.

I think, by and large, what makes the loot and the game feel better is NOT TYING STATS TO EQUIPMENT SO MUCH. Like, I'm willing to guess that I'm halfway through the game but it just doesn't seem like that's such an emphasis. I think my Outlander is level 33ish? And while she has some stat bonuses here and there, that doesn't seem like what's driving the game to me so much. Maybe on game+ it will be different, but that's a major difference I've noticed (and really liked) so far.

It makes me think that itemization in D3 is just completely and irrevocably fucked, though.

There's also some awesome variety in bonuses, it's not just +STR/DEX. I got some legendary pistol last night with this Zombie killing bonus. I'll screencap it when I get home tonight.

It's PC only for now. It's still as ugly as the first game, but for some reason I'm experiencing a fair amount of slowdown despite having a decent gaming rig.

I hit level 42 and I now have an army of robots. Has anyone completed the secret robot parts mission? I'm hoping that will yield me yet another minion.

There is speculation that the robot parts quest opens up a secret area similar to the cow/pony level from Diablo.

Anyways, I finished this game with my 50 Embermage on Veteran. Stomped everything in my path. I'll edit this post with my build later.

EDIT:

Basically start by putting all your points into Prismatic Bolt and Charge Mastery. Combined with the right gear, you will never run out of mana, as your Charge will be up before you spend more than 1/4 of your mana.

After that, spend points in the other skills as needed. Frost Phase is a great "oh shit" button for when an enemy suddenly closes the distance. I made this character before I found out you can remove the first skill point in the beginning of the game, so you could probably put that to better use than Magma Spear, because I never used that ability in this build.

Oh and for stats, spend every point in Focus. Every- single- point.

Yeah, I'm really regretting going Ice Mage, as the ice bolts are basically Prismatic Bolts only less damage, one element only, and they don't seek.

Making Prismatic your default also has the (now apparent) bonus of letting ANY +Element Damage equipment be useful to you.

THANKFULLY THIS GAME DOESN'T LET ME RESPEC! THIS IS LIVING! SO AWESOME AND REPLAYABLE!

Yeah, that's my only real complaint with this game. The ability to respec would be so nice. I'd love to hear Runic on why they feel like subjecting players to this torture.

I was lucky that my friend was fucking around with his alt and found this build when he did, I was able to reroll my character without having to re-do too much.

I'm just taking the 5 skill point hit and barreling on. I'm happy with my points in Hailstorm and Thunder Locus - they both gel well with my "drop it, kite it, loot it" playstyle. My points in the Frozen Fate and Ice Brand passives are also still good (and synergistic) It's just 5 points in Icy Blast that ISN'T EVEN ON MY SKILL BAR anymore.

It will effect skills I believe but not spells. Kind of confusing that way.

Clarification- I believe if the skill/spell bases anything off weapon dps/etc then it will effect it, otherwise it's cast speed.

My crapintosh doesn't have a good enough GPU to run this, but I see Torchlight 1 is in the current Humble Bundle and I can run that. Is it still worth playing? I'm in the mood for any kind of loot game (as I cant afford Borderlands :'() and I'm keen to see what the fuss is about with Torchlight.

I mean... I guess? The original TL is really like babby's first Diablo... it has a very limited and repetitive setting. That said, you're still killing shit and getting loot and if it's super cheap (less than $10) I'd say it's worth it.

Definitely worth it then, just don't be surprised if you get bored after a few hours with it. It takes a special kind of degenerate (me) to obsess over loot games enough to want to min/max for dozens of hours.

lol Torchlight 1 really is babby's first RPG. As the ranged class I can allocate my skill points into...... uh..... attack AND defense. Whoa. It's pretty fun though. I'm gonna start again on Very Hard because achievements and Hard seems too easy. My favourite part of the game is how I can level up and choose different abilities

Finished on L47. Did a few Mapworks maps and hit L50.

The game's okay. I mean, it's comparable to D3, and $20, so that's nice, if you're poor I guess. And it has offline mode and LAN play, which is good if you live on an airplane or in Sweden. But the core combat model just doesn't come close to D3, and that really hurts the moment-to-moment joy of play.

You get a LOT of great items - and often - but the constant stream means their impact is eventually dulled. Itemization is weird; even at the end of the game I was using some iLVL 20-30 items because I never got anything better for that slot.

The game just doesn't seem balanced, or to care about balancing. Which really kind of discourages replayability. At this point I think it's going back on the shelf, Bethesda-game style, until somebody comes and mods a bit more gameplay into the very nice systems.

Anyone saying this game is better than D3 I can only imagine played about 5 hours of each. TL2 does make a better first impression.

Oh, and the art suxxx.

Overall 7.5/10.

The thing that's always puzzled me about the art or whatever is that it was a conscious decision at some point... they certainly had enough money/assets to not have it look so shitty, but I guess the old Blizz North dudes just really dig that shitty cartoony wow style. Mind boggling, really.

I still haven't beat it but imagine I'll end up largely agreeing with Treesong as we seem to have comparable tastes for these sort of games.
