My Dreamcast freezes when I play Shenmue 1 and 2. I don't know if it's my GD-ROMS or the Dreamcast, but replacing Shenmue II PAL isn't exactly easy to do. Plus, 1080p isn't possible on Dreamcast. I could emulate in NullDC, but that emulator is still spotty.

I think Shenmue hold up well. Really gets across the feeling of adventure, especially when you get to the sequel. That's rare in games, imo.

Only the control scheme feels dated, since you move with the d-pad and use the left analog stick for some camera movement. Assuming there is an HD collection, I'm sure that could be fixed, since JGR HD has brand new camera control. They'd also need to add VMU stuff on screen. Or on the weeeooo screen. Otherwise it hold up really well, assuming you can handle the slow pace. Some people can't anymore. It's really very slow.

And I don't think Shenmue 3 will ever be a thing. Real ending is:

Shenmue 2 is a dream.

No they will not and if PSU is any indication neither will most of the content! There's a pretty thriving English community on the JP servers anyway. If the US servers are well run and fairly up to date I'll run on them too, it'd be nice to know wtf is going on story wise.

Shenmue II is amazing. Linkzg, II has analog controls. Shenmue 1's controls are pretty fine, has the most relaxing controls in a game.

I'd far prefer a Yakuza 1/2 HD release over Shenmue, and it'd probably do better for Sega in the long run too.

Also the "lol no gameplay" trolls are pretty bad and show how limited your gaming knowledge is. Shenmue is an adventure game with the occasional action bit. Yakuza is a full on action adventure with rpg elements and leveling up and blah blah. Saying Shenmue has no gameplay is like saying Day of the Tentacle has no gameplay. You do story scenarios, explore, and solve puzzles. Same shit, different dimension (2d vs 3d) and emphasis (cartoony vs realistic).

Shenmue 1 IS boring, and that's part of the novelty. I CAN'T EXPLAIN IT. But it's totally different from any other game out there, it's boring and mundane because nothing happens but at the same time it's so interesting and detailed that I don't give a shit.

Now Shenmue II however, is the greatest martial arts game ever made.

So Shen Mue is a graphic adventure game in the same genre as Monkey Island now?

It's a 3D action/adventure game. A boring one. Maybe II is much better- I dunno 'cause I lost interest in after 30 minutes.

Still spent more time with Shen Mue than I have with any Yakuza game- hoping Yakuza 1+2 comes out for PS3 in the U.S. with the original game in Japanese.

Um. Yeah, it's same genre as Monkey Island. Same structure. You said it's an action adventure but there are only about 5-6 fights total in Shenmue, so clearly it has no emphasis on action.

I realize Shenmue is boring. Even I admit this. It's very, very dull. And yet, I still like it despite this. But unlike games that just fall flat and end up being dull, Shenmue 1 is dull...on PURPOSE. Which is very hard to explain and very hard to pinpoint in terms of appeal.

Shenmue II is much better as a game. It features open cities with tons of things to do, three different locales, a multiple chapter spawning martial arts story, intense and crazy moments. It is the ying to Shenmue I's yang. If Shenmue I+II HD ever becomes a thing, I highly suggest picking it up, at least at a cheap price. The amount of people I know who aren't big on the first Shenmue but are unadulterated fanboys of its sequel is too high in number.
