Who do you get your news from?
« on: August 15, 2012, 12:27:32 AM »
Personally, I don't have cable because it's a waste, and I don't read the paper because I'm a filthy poor who doesn't like looking through pages of shit to find one thing I'm interested in.

I usually find out about stuff through Google News, my local news station's RSS feed, and a Youtube channel called Sourcefed.

What about you guys?

MSNBC, CNN, Al Jazeera and occasionally the local news - ABC Eyewitness News, News 12 LI, etc. And rarely pick up a copy of Newsday.

Twitter news accounts. NYT, TIME.com, CNN, Breaking News, tech sites like The Verge and Tech Crunch, and anything else that people retweet from other verified news accounts. Sometimes I browse these sites also, but twitter is much quicker and right in my face since I'm always checking it.

I hate watching the news because they sensationalize everything. And newspapers are pretty pointless with da innanets and all.

i get my news from Law and Order.  I figure any show that features episodes ripped from the headlines is probably an accurate and balanced portrayal of the day to day workings of society.

Mainstream: Try to keep a balance as most of the media outlets I have listed below have a strong bias. The news coming from them should be taken with a pinch of salt - yes that includes the BBC with their middle east 'coverage'. Used to influence rather than inform public.

BBC - According to average Joe the gold standard - what they do not tell you is just as important. In reality the bias is just as great (a lot more subtle) as the outlets listed below.
Telegraph - (Torygraph) Interesting one - often tells it like it is with EU issues and the financial meltdown despite right wing bias.
Guardian - Typical young hip left wing. Good with exposing the (huge) Newscorp corruption and publishing the Wikileaks files. A lot of stuff they don't report on though.
Russia Today - Kremlin, but better grasp of non western coverage. The middle east viewpoint highlighting Bahrain, Israel and Saudi Arabia has highlighted the bias of some western outlets inc. BBC.

I wonder how impartial the BBC is to American news?  Would our politics sway how they write their stories about what's going on over here?

(In example, the shootings in Aurora: one media outlet uses it to rally for gun control and the other talks about how it relates to poverty, ect)
WTF
