The Last Story thread?
« on: August 16, 2012, 01:13:07 AM »
Is anyone getting this? I know the shipping delay has caused quite a fuss on the GameFAQs boards, but Gamestops should have it by Friday. I don't know I'm pretty curious about the game. The character designer is the guy who did both Drakengard games and so they are pretty awesome. And while the graphics don't look great(not really because of the Wii, maybe the actual art design on color palate) the combat looks very interesting and new for a jrpg.
So yeah looks like a decent game.

I have it preordered, if it ever comes out  ::)

Word of mouth is somewhat mediocre but we'll see. Hopefully there'll be some redeeming features of it. At least the story doesn't look (emphasis here) like complete crap or JRPG-emoness stuff.

It's not a JRPG, really.  More of a melee-based cover shooter.  And it's pretty crappy.

Eh, i am absolutely loving it.  I am liking it more than Xenoblade Chronicles.  I love the story, it is like a cross between FF8 and Suikoden.  The combat while easy is a lot more fun to me than XC.   But the animation is horrid.  HORRID, i have yet to see animation worse in the ps2 era.

Yes, I've heard a lot of mixed things. And the entire combat stuff looks a bit wonky. Still, it's a jrpg and I like jrpgs so I feel the desire to at least try it.

Yeah, I went to the store to try and pick it up but it got pushed back to Friday... I probably won't get to it for a while, as I'm about to embark on a big move and it'll take me a bit of time to get settled... but it's gonna be the first game I play when I do. I've been looking forward to it, even with all the mixed reviews. Sometimes the RPGs with the more mixed reviews turn out to be my favorites.

it's not an rpg
Haha. I liked how I glossed over this in my reply to your first post. I'm an idiot. Anyway, the fact that you claim that this game that's marketed as a jrpg isn't actually one makes me a bit more curious. And also somewhat scared as the cover stuff has looked a bit silly. Either way I'll find out tomorrwo it seems.

Pretty much, there are so many side quests and they all suck.  Got bored aswell due to the mmorpg nature of the game.

Picked my copy up today. About an hour in so far and well I'm digging it. Who knows what will happened, but the battle system seems cool. I'm also really liking the character designs so far. Its got Xenoblade beaten in that regard.

My impressions are kind of the opposite. I'm kind of liking the combat, but it is stupidly chaotic. It's still very strangely intersting.

Presentation wise though, the game looks ugly. It's not even a Wii thing since Xenoblade and Skyward Sword look great. Also the animenation is pretty meh. The color palate is also not a good choice for the Wii. I do really like the character designs a lot though.

Story seems kind of lame though. Really some of the stuff seems like typical lame jrpg stuff like the dumb princess character.

I don't know seems like a decent game. Haven't been able to eat into though because of work.

Honestly the game is starting to grow on me. I'm kind of liking the magic circles and using them in combat. In general this game does a good job making the environment feel like an actual part of the combat. And the story seems pretty decent. I kind of like Zael. It's nice to see a kind of optimistic main character with goals and dreams.

Not in the one's I've played recently. They all seem to be moopy angst filled people.

I'm not saying the characters here are great. They just aren't annoying me.

I really like the outfit editor thing. Every rpg needs this. As someone who only likes having characters staying in their hopefully nicely designed outfit. I rather hate when your armor changes with new equipment or as it is in TLS, your armor appears over their default outfits. But I understand that people like cosmetic changes with new equipment.

So I like that you can basically edit your characters appearance and make the equipment effects disappear. I don't know, it's just a cool thing to me.

I'm maybe half way though this game now and will I'm enjoying it, but it is'nt as great as it could be.

I'm pretty up and down with this game. Mostly because of the combat. Sometimes it's really good. I like that paying attention to the environments is somewhat part of the game. It feels like the environment is actually really a part of the game. And I don't mean "oh this tile has x2 damage", though the game does have something like that thanks to gale another positive. But I mean I like that I'm moving around and cover seems to play in how I approach my enemies. Do I lure them to cover so that I can use slash? Or do I just wait for them to come to me while I'm still hiding? I don't know, it's pretty cool you know? I feel involved in the battles sometimes.

But really on the flipside it feels like a lot of that is kind of pointless and battles amount to taking aggro and defusing things. The game is pretty easy and while reviews mention that the game has these battles that feel like puzzles, I sure have yet to encounter them. There's also the fact that the game can just feel very chaotic at times and the games flimsy engine doesn't help. I'm also playing on manual so I'm pressing A to actually do shit. It makes the game feel like an actual game. But it is pretty wonky, since each slash like pushes whatever your hitting back a bit(unless they are like stuck on a wall) ,but since your in the mindset of any other action game you feel like hey I just mash x to get combos, but after 1 hit all you will hit is air. So it's kind of shitty.

As for the story, well I quite like it. I know most reviews cited that the supporting characters lack backstory or depth. I guess this is mostly true, but I don't care. Honestly, the characters are pretty entertaining. They all have good well defined personalities, wich leads to good character interaction. While most of them are pretty much character types you've seen before, they are done well here. So I like them. They aren't annoying characters at all and mostly avoid the "teen angst" complaint that's thrown at jrpgs all the time. The characters feel like well realized, smart, and mature characters. It also helps that this game has pretty much the best character designs I have ever seen. Best looking main cast ever. I said before that I like the main character, and I do. He is probably the best jrpg lead of recent times. Not to say he isn't bland, but he's not annoying to follow. He doesn't whine and most importantly he seems to have a good head on his shoulders.

The story to me is pretty decent. It's nothing amazing, but thanks to the decent cast it gets the job done. It eventually goes to typical crazy jrpg places, but for the most part the story is level headed. It's got a good personal journey thing going on that's light ant not too overly serious. It's just kind of fun. I would also say it's pretty decently written.

Though I think the game has pretty fantastic character designs and would say the art design is pretty fantastic. The graphics are ugly and not a good suit for the Wii. Wii games can look good, but not TLS. Bad textures everywhere and the game is asking for detail since the outfits(which btw are cool and not crazy as seen in say a FF game) and the games enviorments are pretty elaborate. The game also has some pretty terrible slowdown.

Anyway, I would say The Last Story is a pretty good game.

Valkyria Chronicles is a good game obviously, but I don't consider it a jrpg. It's a strategy game first and foremost. Nier I don't like at all thanks to it's terrible combat and annoying characters. I understand a lot of people like it's story, but it did nothing for me. I also don't get how it's a rpg. I mean it's rpg elements are pretty weak and can mostly be ignored. Kind of like the Drakengard games. Blue Dragon has some pretty great graphics and a good job system but it's pacing and story in the end bored me so I've never finished it. Didn't care for TLR, it's battle system just didn't jive with me because of my own personal nitpicks. And the xbox version(the one available to me) runs pretty terribly.

I haven't finished it. It seemed pretty cool. I only got like 3 hours in so I don't have much to say about it.

To cover my ass when people bring up handhelds. I don't really play handhelds, but I also don't see anything that intrests me on them. I do have a PSP and the rpgs that are new (well to me) that I have played are Ys 7, Trails in the Sky, Ys:Oath, Crisis Core, and Persona 2. Ys 7 is probably the best of the bunch with it's terrific combat, but I still enjoyed The Last Story better thanks to it's characters, story, writing, interesting battle system, and well it's art.
