The fact that his final movie will never be finished is such a tragedy.

Dreaming Machine (夢みる機械 Yume Miru Kikai?) is an upcoming anime film by Satoshi Kon. When released, it will be the director's fifth and final feature film. After Kon's death on August 24, 2010, production has continued and is still underway at Madhouse, where the team uses Satoshi Kon's directorial tapes and notes to guide them to completing the film, though the main work such as storyboards and script was already complete.

Can't have a Satoshi Kon appreciation thread without Magnetic Rose:

Millennium Actress is really, really good. I'd watch that next.

I think I've seen all his movies aside from Tokyo Godfathers. I should get around to watching it sometime. Also was Paranoia Agent any good?

Paranoia Agent starts out great but meanders and just plain gets nutso later on in the show.

I like Tokyo Godfathers more than Millennium Actress, though I know I'm in a minority MA is my least favorite Kon film.

I want to give Rumbler props for including Magnetic Rose, because even though Kon didn't technically direct it, his fingerprints are all over it.
and its also really fucking great, which is, since Kon's passing, and unfortunate rarity in the world of anime.  Hell, all of Memories is pretty damn awesome.

Perfect Blue is one of my very favorite films.  Its like Dario Argento and Brian De Palma combined their best ever talents and got it animated.  Its one of my favorite films to show people to induce a sure-thing mind blowing.

and one last thing.  Accoring to Amazon, my DVD's of PB and Paranoia Agent have appreciated in value.  And I dropped a shitload of moolah on those back when they were new.

Paranoia Agent is tragically OOP in the US so that's not surprising. Guess Perfect Blue is too if it's also pricey. Some shit Funi really ought to license rescue.

Right, it was actually directed by Kouji Morimoto, but the psychological aspect of it definitely feels like Kon's influence.

And here's the absolute last thing that Kon directed [and finished]:

he apparently tended towards female main characters because said he knows too much about being a dude- and all the things he hates about dudes- that not knowing what its like to be a woman makes a female character easier to apply his ideas to.

With Satoshi Kon gone, I hope someone else picks up the mantle of making movies that feature music by Susumu Hirasawa. Seems unlikely, though. :(
