Judge, Jury, and Executioner [in 3D]
« on: August 24, 2012, 04:36:30 PM »

Quote
The future world is an irradiated waste land. Somewhere, off an eastern coast, lies Mega City One – a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban police force known simply as the "Judges" who possess the combined powers of judge, jury, and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of "Slo-Mo" experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities due to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture – a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute-turned-drug lord, Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan's inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound's control center and wages a brutal, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

Quote from: Variety
Grim, gritty and ultra-violent, Dredd reinstates the somber brutality missing from the U.K. comicbook icon's previous screen outing.

Quote from: SFX Magazine
Clearly made with love by people who have read the comics and understand what makes Joe Dredd tick, it's a focussed and thoroughly entertaining take on one of the most enduring characters in British comics.

Quote from: Hollywood.com
Dredd is a grimy, smoldering, relentless 90 minutes that manages to inject its in-your-face fight scenes with an unexpected bit of humanity.

Quote from: Screencrush
It makes 'Dirty Harry' look like '12 Angry Men.'

Blue atsunami I think said that'd it'd be hilarious if he says 'I am the Law' in third person. That'd be amazing.

I actually thought that the Punisher Warzone end scene of him vs tower was Ctually ok. It's just the unrealistic fight scene with the brother that SERIOULY killed the sod. Suspension of drama is the acronym.

I want this to succeed, but its doomed to fail.  Its hard enough for an R-rated film based on an obscure (still, in America) comic with no major stars to gain any traction.  But all the good 3D screens will be occupied by Finding Nemo and Resident Evil part 5, which comes out the week before.

BTW, RE5 will probably under perform too, but will still leave this almost certainly much better film in the dust.  Just like Underworld 4: Shit way outgrossed the very great Haywire.  The better known property will win.

Karl Urban was the bad guy with the most screen time in RED, and McCoy in Star Trek! What more do you want?!

$45 million doesn't get you as much as it used to.

That's actually HALF of what Stallone's Dredd cost 17 years ago. :lol

So, wait, is this a rip-off of The Raid: Redemption, or are both these movies ripping off The Horde, or maybe Assault on Precinct 13?

Dredd 3D started filming back in November 2010, four months before The Raid began filming.

Thanks! I was certain I'd heard something along those lines, but could not remember the details.

This must be one of those "hundredth monkey" things. Or "hundredth Judge."

His partner is maddeningly gorgeous. Her look and attitude was obviously intentional so that you can perceive how the mission affects her. As for her fate...

Dredd was 6th at the Box Office making only 6.3 Million.

Fuck this earth.

Yeah, I know.  :-\

Hopefully it does well overseas [them foreigners can't get enough of that Three-Dee] and in home release. The budget was pretty low, at least, and I doubt they spent very much advertising it.

It's an R-rated movie based on a lesser known IP. I saw it Friday night yet the usually busy theater was practically empty. I really hope it was cheaply made.

$45-$50 million, about half of what the original cost back in 1995.

In that case it shouldn't have problems grossing 20mil domestically and 30mil internationally. Especially since the marketing budget seems to be nonexistent.
