I think I may have seen these like once in my entire time here.  Square watermelons are rare as hell, most people can somehow make do with the round ones.

I don't remember the exact amount, but they were way more than regular (but still fancy and decorative looking) watermelons, which were over $200 each.

Yeah, we saw those. The ones in the department stores are more about status. They're what you'd give as an extravagant present, not to just take home and eat.

Yeah, I think I've had ¥10,000 melons, which were received as a gift... but never any of those square melons.

Yeah, Japan has all sorts of overpriced fancy fruits that you give to people.  Someone once brought some insanely expensive grapes to our office, I think the price was something like $5 per single grape.  They did taste pretty damn good.
