Riding a motorbike
« on: September 10, 2012, 01:01:34 PM »
Spent a few hours riding around the city today, first time I wasnt commuting but just exploring. Its so nice to smell the fresh air and discover new spots while you split lanes and bogged down cars are left behind.

All went fine untill I almost ran into these pedestrians, I was overtaking a big bus that was stuck in traffic and they just popped out in front of it (there was a crossing but their light was rwad) had to hit the breaks hard.

This made me realize how vulnerable I am on a bike, even if I ride great a stupid pedestrain could kill me.

That said Im already looking which bike to buy next, as my commute is super short (7km) a 650cc bike would be a bit overkill but then again I cant take my gf on a 125cc one an drive to spain or france... Luckily it seems bike manufacturers are releasing many 250/350cc bikes  that are great commuters but can also go on the autobahn.

I want my second bike to be spanking new so here are a few mosles im thinking about. Keep in mind its 90% commute amd 10% occasional drive I think, with or without a passenger.

Kawasaki Ninja 300, Ktm Duke 350, Suzuki Inazuma 250, Honda Cbr250r. Also Triumph is apparently making a 350cc naked bike thats gonna be out next year. Motorbore what do you thonk of these models?

honda ns700x. $7K flat in amurrican dollaz. light, reliable, decent on rough roads, 70+ mpg, 60ish hp. good "adventure" sport bike. $2K more will get you a dct (auto) version and mockery. http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/honda/2012-honda-nc700x-review-video-91365.html

the euroskanks will double up on your dick once you step offa that, at least as a "starter" bike.

and yeah, i have regular scares, all of which are reminders i use to make sure i am always in top mental form when i get on my bike, and that i am always scanning for dangers. the more you ride, the better you'll get it. don't be intimidated; just learn! you'll drop the bike once or twice in the first 3K miles (or whatever that is in filthy euro km, like 5K km). it's okay! better embarrassed or a little freaked out than injured!

riding beats just about ANYTHING for stress relief, short of barebacking phoenix dark's mom.

still, i'd suck an entire applebee's worth of dirty geezer dingus for an iron 883

Doug it's like you read my mind, thats the only big bike I've been seriously looking :lol Its gotten some pretty amazing reviews.

Also mpg is pretty big with gas being crazy expensive here, so that mileage looks promising.

US gas price per gallon = 3.85 $
Ireland gas price per gallon = 8.2 $ (which compared to some eu contries is cheap still)

How do licenses work in the US?

I got a learner permit here, to get it I had to do a 16 hour course. For now I'm not allowed on the highway or to carry a pillion, not to mention I have to wear a vest with an L  :lol
In two months I can take the full license test though and then my girl can jump on.

How do your significant others feel about going for a spin?

as typical in the yew-ess-of-ay, anyone can walk in and get a learner permit and then all you hafta do is take a test within six months. no required course, no clear newb identifier. it's kinda stupid, which is why we have so many fatalities and gruesome accidents when dipshit 20-somethings go straight from dirt bike to gixxer/hayabusa and wind up a giant smear on hwy 2.

what we DO have is the motorcycle safety foundation courses, which are $80 to $125 depending on your region, and which offer awesome training from pro riders. if you successfully pass their test, you automatically get the license -- and it's not a cakewalk. (i barely passed with a 91 out of 100 after i botched the u-turn. i will always hate the yamaha virago because of this.) it's 24 hours of pretty grueling time on the bike, and they criticize the living heck out of you. (they also kick the jerkoffs out of class if they drop the bike or get too stupid, which is awesome. fuck, they kick you out if you don't show up for any of the three days without proper helmet/gloves/jacket/boots.) they do this because most american riders are mentally distinguished mentally-challenged and they want the roads safe, you safe, and the hobby safe from the state/fed regulations that follow in the wake of too many dead idiots.

they put you on a 125 or 250cc bike like an oldish rebel or virago, which have bears of clutches, and you spend 16 of the 24 hours riding while they watch and point out all the unsafe shit you're doing. it should really be mandatory.

edit: some states allow lane splitting. not wa or ca, for sure. in wa, lane splitting is a guaranteed $185 fine. american commuters aren't good at respecting riders in heavy traffic -- too many dead riders from sudden lurches or inattentive lane straddles.

Yeah I did my course on a 250 Rebel and 250 CBF. 16 hours cost me 600 euro and I got a cert, which you need for a learner permit.

Wait so you don't need ANYTHING for a learner permit?

we also have good street and advanced courses, which teach better braking, corner/countersteering, and clutch/throttle techniques. (of course, only a few people take them -- paranoiacs like me, survivors of high sides on the mountain hwys, and old duffs.)

i'm taking a track course on saturday (if i'm over this cold) <3

i want my wife to let me get an older 250cc just to work on and to play mechanic with, and with a dry clutch so I can work on my clutch skillz in town. my current bike is way too high tech to really help me master the basics. sometimes i feel like i shoulda stayed on a smaller bike longer.

but then I get onto a clear stretch of sunny open hwy and i pop into 6th and VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM FUCK YEAH BONER TOWN HERE I CUM. also crushing hogfags off the line never gets old, and it's doubly pleasurable as i am a stupid newb on a woppy ride and they are oldtimer turds on $20k monsters

You're an idiot. First of all, there aren't bike lanes on every road. Roads are the domain of everyone and have been since time immemorial. They are used by everyone's tax dollars to allow people to travel, whether by foot, bicycle, horse, moped, automobile, etc. The only exception is restricted access highways such as interstates. Bicyclists are reducing traffic, reducing their carbon footprint, and generally making the world a better place. If you have to wait ten whole seconds to find an opportune time to pass them use that ten seconds to try and climb out of your ego and realize that just because you are riding around in a steel cage that is capable of going 140mph, inside you are still a mushy bag of organs that means nothing to the world and your ten seconds mean nothing to anyone and never will.

they also go SLOW, and SLOW is for FEGS. ten seconds is ten seconds i will never get back because some gawping git in spandex couldn't be bothered to plan his route to use bike lanes in a pair of cities that claims on their own signage that they are "THE BIKE CAPITAL(S) OF THE PACIFIC NW," and instead decided to let ten cars pile up behind him on a shoulder-less road as he goes 1/4th the posted speed. that's not acceptable when a CAR does it -- despite the "roads are freeeeee!" idea -- and it's sure as hell not acceptable when a bicyclist does it. hey, if I walk down the middle of a busy backroad as a pedestrian, i'm saving carbon! SO SORRY ABOUT MY 2.5 MPH AND ASSOCIATED HAZARD, oh look the camry and suv parade turned me into asphalt paste and THE BUSINESS DOESN'T FEEL SORRY FOR MEEEE

I did a 90km bycicle journey once over a highway and roads with almost no shoulder, in retrospect I must have been suicidal on these narrow roads. Anything coming up behind me could have killed me in the mountains, I was basically crawling. I'd never do this again.

My favorite cyclist peeve is their opportune switching between road and pedestrian right of ways.  Nearly every day I see a guy riding in the street roll up to a stop light, and rather than stop or give even the slightest inclination of slowing down, they steer around and ride down the crosswalk as the people turning across the lane have to slam on their brakes to avoid running him down.

I love cruising past people on my bike as they drive their cars to work in the city on beautiful sunny days, and knowing I took less than half the time to get there while they're stuck in traffic is great. The other night I was driving with my mum on a rainy horrible night and some dude was cycling in front of us blocking the way (had high vis and lights all over the show, clear as day and should be safe if drivers don't suck), road was packed but she had to go a few kph slower so she starts beeping and yelling get over! Tried explaining how he was over as far as was safe and winding in and out of the kerb based on where cars are parked is way more dangerous than claiming your space on the road so cars know where you are but she didn't get it, this dude was cycling in the rain while we were comfortable and warm and she couldn't give him a few seconds while she waited to pass. Drivers can be real arrogant tards, even my otherwise lovely mum.

chalk me up as another bicyclist hater. They slow everything down and are ALWAYS smug. I'm pretty sure every bicyclist's dream is to get hit by a car - not fatally of course, but just enough to warrant a lawsuit. Their understanding of the law leads to them doing stuff like deciding to take a drink during a red light - "oh it's green now, guess I'll slowly put my vitamin water back in my bag and...oh wait, another red light! guess I'll just take another sip instead!" So they're actually holding car drivers hostage  >:(
