As stringy as Capcom is (they put a bullet in Mega Man's head) I doubt they'd put this much effort into an international release that they wouldn't expect a massive return on.

Japan buys and plays enough MonHun that even if the rest of the world gives no fucks it's still quite lucrative for Capcom anyway. :-[

It really sold quite well relative to previous sales in the series. Should be pushing a million among America and Europe, but Oscar would know better than I would.

Thats not bad actually, considering they see it as a bonus.

Why isn't it MonHun4 though? I'd play a Monhun game if it ever came to something I own (PC), and not that MMO thats out.

all depends really - MH3rdP HD sold about 400k copies though it was a bit of a mess. MH3GHD will get the added boon of being a strong launch title AND having a hardware bundle in Japan.

Outside of Japan? I'd LOVE MH to set the world on fire, but MH3G - for me - isn't the game: Way too wordy, has some issues, not sure how they'll iron out the 3DS bugs before the HD version etc

Quote

i'd go for about 1 million globally. 500k or so for Japan, 180k for US, 220k for Europe then the rest in slow moving dribbles. I think capcom would be happy with that? I'd assume 3G has been outsourced to Xing again (?)

Dunno why pilonv's yucking it up, Andrex's number for Tri is not that far off the mark.  Sold better than Mirror's Edge, at any rate.

The last definitive number I heard was 500k in America, which I assume is 600-700k by now. Factoring in Yurop (PAL?) as 300-400k, 1 mil seemed about right for Tri internationally.

Tried going through some Capcom financial PDFs but those thing are almost impenetrable. I used to have fond memories of them just listing out what a game sold in each region in a nice, basic chart. Maybe I was looking at the wrong PDFs.

They're, uh, a little hard to get into. Tri has the best difficulty curve in the series I'm told, although I'm also told 3G has too much text... though maybe that's better for beginners.

The control scheme is weird. It's like a turn-based RPG, only without turns and without the RPG... All your attacks have a long animation time, which means you have to attack when you know you have enough time for the attack to finish through. Intersperse that with rolling/dodging (which frame cancels.) A large part is also learning each and every monster's unique attack patterns and attack animations. It's somewhat looty/arcadey which I like a lot. Big focus on upgrading your armor/weapons through the stuff you collect from hunting (and/or gathering.) Each weapon also plays very different from eachother, with some like the Bowgun feeling like a different game entirely.

However I literally spent the first 10 hours of Tri collecting bug semen and doing other weird things, avoiding a "big" monster (Jaggi) that is barely fodder for you by the end of the game. I imagine that's the biggest turn off for new players outside the combat system.

As for, "are they good?" Yeah. There's a lot of quality and work put into each game in the series (except Portable 3rd HD which I'm told was a hack port job.) The monsters all have unique animations and those animations are so good they seem like they mocapped real animals. The online is a blast, as you'd expect from a lootey/arcady game like this.

Edit- If you take Oscar's suggestion and get Tri, I can play online with ya and ease you in. :)

if you look at the JPN first screen shot and the English first screen shot, you'll notice that:

a) the screen shot is maybe a few pixels out, but from the same scene
b) players are in the same locations
c) icon colours are wrong
b) the English communication box text is a translation of the Japanese text

so ... yeah.... not sure what this means for the game. Not yet done? Real time language switching?!

The slow start is easily the most painful thing about the game - i just want to jump straight to having all my traps/support items sorted out and to go kick some arse.

what - the - fuck - are you talking about?! the animation is one of the things i'd leave of the list for the series. It's okay but it's serially canned animation; largely the same from MH1 - it's good in parts, okay in others and damned awful in others.

The game goes through several phases but the core of the battle mechanic is that it's one gigantic game of poker. You are reading bluffs and tells from a monster and acting accordingly. Knowing when to hold back and when to go for it, discovering what each monster is weak against, what it's strong against, and what quirks it has.

Portable 3rd HD was a pretty half-arsed port, and it did have bugs.  On the other hand, Capcom and Monster Hunter are no strangers to half-arsed ports and bugginess.  As we are seeing again.

Wow what an awesome port.  Almost as good as Echoes of Time Wii!

the main issue looks wise is they did nothing with the bitmaps - so all the hud stuff looks horrific as does some of the folliage - however, the game itself looks above passable for what it is. Looks great in 3D as well.

However, the bigger issue with the HD port is the game frigging freezes a lot and has a host of other issues. Nothing worse than taking down one of the last boss monsters in four player just to have it freeze on you.

nope - there's a long list of issues with MH3G.

please ALWAYS insert "[NINTENDO VERSIONS ONLY]" whenever you mention a series that has covered multiplatforms, we've already discussed that. I'll settle for a *.

The game doesn't look that great, nor a disaster - it's just... ordinary. It's more a reality check that i was thinking it had had substantial rework done but outside the interface that's not really the case, it just makes me realise that my delusion of one day having an incredible looking MH is -not- going to happen. Ever.

Given the gap between MH3U and MH4 in Japan, it's starting to look like a pointless short term purchase. If the usual team plays through MH3G 3DS we could rattle through it insanely quickly, so ... maybe that will happen instead?

I dunno - i don't blame "my source" so much - what he said is still true (best looking MH to date) but the bar has been cleared, but not by the amount i was foolishly hoping for.

But perhaps you are right - i should lay the blame at his feet at a rate of 1/10 and mine at 9/10.

on the other hand : I'll lay low Nthing standards at Nintendo's feet ? or fans for being thick? Just waiting for guidance.

we've already discussed this - you are a fan -as long- as it's on a Nintendo platform. If it were to leave to go to, say, Apple or Vita or whatever for a period, you would not play it.

Conditional platform dependent makes you a fan of games on Nintendo platforms, not a fan of the series.

I'd still be a fan even if it went to other platforms, I just wouldn't be able to play it until I got those platforms. If it moved to PC, I'd still be a fan. If it moved to Android, I'd be a fan. If it moved elsewhere, I'd still be a fan.

Could you call yourself a KH fan if you played the first two games but skipped BBS? Yes. It's the same situation.

I've played MonHun on PC, PS2, PSP and Wii. Soon I will play it on WiiU and 3DS as well. I love the series and I'll play it till it gets terribad but I don't really consider myself a "fan". I think the word fan should be reserved for acebandage and the like, but since it's commonly used online I just go with it.

I understand the enthusiasm, i don't understand the "OMG LOOKS FUCKING AMAZING!!!!!" crowd

im trying to see that myself. and the comparisons with p3hd arent helping its cause.

It's 1920 by 1080 pixels, so yes. It passes as HD everywhere.

Capcom is pretty clearly dedicated to doing the bare minimum with each installment.

I've never played any of those Monster Hunter games, but those screenshots might as well have little PiP inserts of a Capcom dude shrugging with a word balloon saying "Fuuuuuuuuuck it" coming out of his mouth

Not on my xbawks.
If something like that appeared on my screen I would sue MS for trying to make me blind.I think I saw something similar back in 1998 or in some circus.

People here are right,Nintendo + Capcom(MH) is a match made in heaven.

There are some games, but they feel forced just like this one/or they are very simple.

I guess the res is the easiest thing to bump up or down(360 is a little bit tricky apparently unlike PS3).
