Black Mesa is out
« on: September 14, 2012, 06:14:24 PM »
You'd think after like 10 years of development it'd at least get a topic!

Gonna download tonight.  Impressions have all been very positive and the screens look great.

Were you even born when Half-life came out?

Which portions are cut?  If they cut out the bad parts of the game to make it a better product I don't see that as "unfinished" but rather a decision to improve the game experience.

I've watched some videos from it and it looks pretty nice to me!  I'll be playing through it over the weekend and see for myself, but I mean it's free, it's done and it's polished and it also takes a classic game that is really really ugly and hard to take serious today and fixes the visual problem, restoring it to classic and still playable status.

Hmm, yeah that was what I was guessing.  I mean the Xen portions are pretty bad and the worst part of the game.  How do "beat" the game though if there's no Xen in the end?  IIRC it was pretty integral to the final area.

The original Half Life is the king, baby. I still play that game to this day. The expansions Gearbox did were made of pure win, especially Opposing Force.

On topic, I'm gonna check this out as a curiosity, but I'm not expecting much. The enemy behavior in GoldSrc is second to none.

I'll check it out, just too bad they don't have it up on Steam yet.

Apparently it has more new assets than the entire asset count of Half-life 2 :o

HL2 was just made more efficiently, most likely.

Probably, but it still took six years and was being made by professionals working full time. Black Mesa took 8 [though, to be fair, it still isn't quite finished] and was done by volunteers working in their free time.

Yeah, but that's exactly what I mean. You will probably have a dozen concrete textures which are indistinguishable from each other, or doors which appear exactly the same but have separately authored open/close/lock logic.

Its actually pretty amazing. Doesnt feel like some half assed mod at all.

For whatever reason the game defaults to easy mode in the options, so turn that to normal first off

Holy shit. I thought it was going to end when the soldiers appear, but apparently they redid the ENTIRE FUCKING GAME up to Xen (AKA the shitty part). Mad respect to these guys.

One of the most impressive things to me is that the voice acting isn't shit!

Yeah I played the first hour or two and it's been great so far.  Very impressed with the textures, models, voices.  It's good to be back in Black Mesa!

Swim all the way down, go around underneath the rim or whatever and go back up on the other side.

This is the most satisfying ostensibly-vaporware release ever. The movement isn't entirely perfect, but aside from that it's damn good. Not a 1:1 conversion, either. My playthroughs of HL must have reached double digits by now. No regrets.

I just got stuck there. I also got stuck:

-- Climbing back up through the Pit Monster room, no matter how many grenades / remote charges I used it always killed me (WTF)
-- The part where you have to "surf" through the radioactive ooze on the back of a barrel/crate/pallet. If this is what you're SUPPOSED to do, the physics simply do not work. I had to cheat/noclip to get past it.

Also, I have gotten killed a lot due to falling off ladders, since the get on/get off code is dogshit (that's Valve's fault though).

It really starts dragging once you get topside.

Also the part with all the laser tripwires inside the ordnance building is fucking horrific with HL2's physics

Putting the Half-Life key into Steam nets you those games, as well, if I remember correctly.

Yes, the Opposing Force disc, IIRC, doesn't activate anything on Steam.

And if you complain about it on The Bore, Cormacaroni will tease you.

Hmm, I'm gonna throw a little blasphemy in here.  Back in the day HL1 was mind-blowingly amazing FPS that changed everything.  HL2 was even better.  But playing HL1 again now 14 years later...this is kind of a long, dull game.  The combat has never been a strong point of the series, and it feels even more dated now.  There's little enemy variety, lots of similar sections since it's a lengthy game (how many vents do you crawl through) and the puzzle platforming controls can be kind of janky.  It also lacks the narrative push that Half-life 2 has where even if the gameplay wasn't doing a lot of things the story would be advancing and keep it interesting.  HL1 is kind of a lonely solitary experience.  It's definitely a classic, but I don't think I'm going to finish Black Mesa when I just feel like I'm going through motions and would rather be playing a more interesting FPS.   They did a great job with the remake though!

You're mostly describing Black Mesa's problems, not those of Half Life.
