Yeah, so when I went to do my wash for the first time in my new place, it leaked water all over the ground

The washing machine I have now is a Whirlpool probably from the late 70's, early 80's, and the previous owners of my place didn't really take care of stuff. So yeah, it's definitely time to get a new one (the dryer seemed to work fine, even if it's also dated)...

anybody have a recommendation of a good washer in the $400-500 range? I don't really know shit about appliances, lol.

I'll be surprised if anyone here can offer actual recommendations. You should just hit up an appliance store and ask. They'll try to give you the run around, I'm sure, but stand your ground and stick within your means.

LG and Samsung are currently the two best brands. But that's for the HE machines (which range from 700-1000). I don't know who the best is for the old style machines.

Try to find a store that offers free delivery (and the delivery driver will haul away you old machine, too). That's about 70 dollars in savings right there.

I just bought a Kenmore washer a few months ago. Got it for around 250 w/ tax and it works great. Uses less water and energy than my old unit and washes faster too.

I went with a whirlpool front load steam washer a few years ago and I love it. Since then the price on them has come down a bit. Get a appliance insurance contract these newer appliances are not made like the machines of yore. The make it cheaper make it faster mentality has its side effects and you don't want to be paying for it a year or two down the line.

Some good reliable brands:

Whirlpool (find the german made models)
LG
Samsung
Kenmore (rebranded LG)

Just make sure you look up the specific model for any possible issues. Also look into any deals on a pair you might save a boat load of money if you take a older pair off the stores hands than just buying a newer washer. And ask what color's aren't selling (LG and Samsung specifically) cause you might be able to get a bargain on a colored one that no one wants.

We have a front loading Fridgidaire washer, which is actually rebranded Electrolux. I think we got the set for $1,000 at Fry's a few years ago.

I don't usually buy German goods due to what went on in WW2, but Meile make amazing domestic machines.

2 years ago we bought a front loading Bosch for $800. It lasted for a month past the warranty(13 months) and it broke. They want $500 to repair it. So it sitting in my basement collecting dust while a free one does its work. The free one has only flooded the basement twice since we got it.

Good, I was going to come in here just to recommend NOT getting a front loading washer and I see you didn't. They're an extra pain in the ass I've never experienced with top loaders. I've got a smaller 4ish year old Samsung w/d set and I hate that fucking front loading washer with a passion.

They are awesome, indestructible tanks. I've had one for years and two people I know do as well. All are going well.
