I really enjoyed the PSP version and you can finish it in less than 10 hours. It holds up better than a lot of older RPGs.

Oh ok. I just walked straight into the first dungeon just to discover I don't have any magic or potions and 3/4 of my team died and the other one died on the way to town.

Yeah, easy RPGs can be ok but the problem with FF1 is that without the difficulty it doesn't really have anything. It's not a game about an epic story or awesome gfx or whatever (ok the music is pretty cool), it's about outfitting your guys, trekking through dangerous dungeons, and slowly uncovering more of the world as your guys get stronger and you get vehicles and stuff. Make it easy and you lose not only the challenge itself but a lot of the sense of adventure.

Never really had any issues with FF 1 - 3 re-played them on a NES emulator last year and finished all three in about a week. I do still have issues when I go back to Phantasy Star 1 though, even regular enemies push my shit in cause i'm grind averse.

Yeah, the Phantasy Star games are all about the grindin'. The first two games are quite fun, but I couldn't get through the third one.

Best version of FF1 is the Origins version by far... all the difficulty of the NES version but now with targeting re-direct and improved graphics/music, plus an autosave.

PS2 is not good in the year 2012. Just play PS1 and PS4. If you're going to play PS2, play the ps2 remake.

I actually agree with that statement, but 1 is hard enough to be interesting. 4 is on some Chrono Trigger/FF6 level shit.

PS4 just goes above and beyond to eclipse and take a shit on all the rest. The animu cutscenes, the overarching story (you hardly even need to play the older ones to understand), the combo techs, the toonz, the grafx...

The animu cutscenes are what wins me over. Plus, the music.

Combined with animu cutscenes of course.

Phantasy Star 2 is fantastic guys, sure it's difficult but it isnt far off PS4. PS1 is well .. err an acquired taste. PS3 is flat out monkey poop.

You mean Generations(the ps2 remake)? Yeah I have that version, the art is odd to say the least lol.

I dont mind the grid battles, really I have fun playing the game so the lack of pretty visuals there didnt harm me much.

I tried PS2 a couple years ago and it was just too diffcult/grind heavy for me. I mean, you can absoluty dominate all enemies on a floor of a dungeon, then go to the next level of the dungeon and the enemies will suddenly kill you in one battle (making you loose lots of progress unless you go back to town all the time). That plus the horribly repetitive dungeons make the game an exercise in frustration.

I played PS4 after that and beat it fair and without save states, great game.

#PS4fanclub :heart

I think it took me a few months to beat PS2 the first time round in the 90s. I did enjoy it though, I stashed the cart far away after beating it. My PS4 cart is still sitting on a visible shelf next to my other games, even though I'd have to drag out my mega drive from my parents place. I for sure love PS4 more than any other but I just cant say Ps2 is bad .. and I am grind averse as well.

PS2 = my favorite game of all time, you guys are just wimps! Every of the old PS games are awesome, even though 3 is kinda mediocre I still like it for some reason. The online games though  :yuck :yuck :yuck

Its pretty bad dode. If they did an updated remake with a more easier to use menu scheme it could be much more enjoyable. Oh, and fix the horrible dungeon layouts.

A guy did a mod for the GBA version of FF1. It drastically changes the flavor of the game.

He also posted a lot of hacking notes. If you're good with a hex editor/debugger/ARM assembly, you can change anything you want in the game, make it as close to the NES version as possible. Unfortunately, I think changing MP back to NES-style magic levels is something he hasn't documented.

http://www.jeffludwig.com/finalfantasy/hacking/

The GBA version, if I recall, cut prices by 20%(?) and cut exp required for level-ups by more than half. The thief also got a redonkulous hit rate right from the start of the game and that made him better than the fighter for a long time. You can easily revert all these changes.

Does Garland still say "I will knock you all down!" in the GBA version? I can't remember.
