If you're a filthy poor and you absolutely CAN'T afford to drink a nice scotch or at worst a really good bourbon, I suppose rum is acceptable. Gin should never be consumed except in martinis, and even then you should never enjoy yourself.

High quality rum can be pretty good all by itself. I only drink gin together with tonic.

Love white rum and gin. Rum gets a bad rap for being the tacky cocktail spirit but it's making a pretty massive comeback atm (for good reason IT'S AWESOME).
