Hey Andrex, tell me why Chrome is being stupid
« on: October 16, 2012, 01:19:48 AM »
Bout a week ago, all of a sudden, text on sites is abnormally large. I've tried changing encoding settings and nothing changes.

Just logged into crunchyroll and here's what I'm greeted with. What the fuck.

When you type chrome://chrome into the Omnibar, which version does it say it is?

Having some problems with Chrome myself lately, Gifs don't load  80% of the time. Same thing happened on another computer where I just reinstalled windows&Chrome, what's up with that?

The new chrome backend is all sorts of fucked up when they switch it over in the latest update. It's gonna take sometime before we're back to the same stability as a few weeks ago. BETA software!!!

You mean there's a fix in development/it has already been fixed?

Yes, that's what I've heard. Don't have access to Canary on this computer but I'll try it when I get home.

Is it worth going to Chrome from Firefox nowadays? I like the plugin choices for FF but it doesn't seem like Chrome has that quite yet.

Flashblock, adblock plus (not on this website for the eventual ads  :D), noscript. Those are the most important ones I guess.

You can use click-to-play for Flash in Chrome's settings, and AdBlock is available. There's a NoScript clone called NotScript that isn't quite as powerful but I'd be surprised if you noticed.

Thanks. I'll have to try that setup. Do you run those plugins too? Are you using Chrome exclusively now?

I switched from Opera around December 2009 when Chrome added extensions and bookmark sync. Since then I've published several extensions of my own.

Because of my hobby/job I use most of the browsers for various things but Chrome is what I browse with. I agree with the app-ification of the web and I hope to switch to Chrome OS eventually.

NeoGaf super ignore  :lol nice. Do you run Adblock and NotScript or is Chrome's design usually robust enough to not require script blocking?

Dunno what you mean by design, but I use AdBlock with a bunch of my favorite sites whitelisted. I don't use NotScript since, as a webappy guy, I need my scripts.

I do use Facebook Disconnect though, because Facebook sucks.

I use Adblock and Flashblock quite heavily, the latter is very nice since I don't get bombarded by flash ads that are incredibly annoying. All I have to do is click on a flash element when I want to play it. Imgur the world is nice, too, since I can just right-click an image and send it directly to Imgur.

Definitely one of my favorite extensions too.

I always thought noscript was a useful way to selectively block js/java etc... stuff from running, rather than disabling them altogether. Is malicious scripting not really an issue in Chrome? I just figured most experienced users ran a script blocking whenever they could.

It's not really an issue since Chrome is sandboxed and is pretty good about patching things (auto-update is great for that.) For instance, last week they patched a security hole found in a sponsored hacking event in less than a day.

It is for me and it's hard to distinguish it from the desktop version, except for lack of extensions (which I harp on about in the GAF OT a lot.) Some people have problems with it though. Performance issues and such. Sometimes it hiccups for me, but sync makes it worth it (plus as a web developer it's leagues better to develop for, so I feel the need to eat my own dogfood to an extent.)

Ummm...Is there any particular reason why you have to manually enter an address to access Chrome Android's browser history? Seems like an odd design choice.

There is a keyboard shortcut for it (ctrl-Y), the Address Bar will fill most of the need from autocompletion, and it is a top-level menu choice from Chrome's only menu, on the far right of the address bar. So it is more accurate to say that Chrome also offers an address to be typed to access the page.

Thanks for the tips, but I was referring to the mobile Android version. You know, on tablets and phones. It turns out you can't directly access the history without entering an address. I've never seen another browser omit that before.

It's a strange omission, but they fact that it's included (just hidden) means they'll probably include it soon, just isn't finished yet.

Huh. OK. Is it a difficult feature to program? It's such a commonplace feature, I never really thought about the effort required to implement it.

Seems like it is already mostly done, but they do have to re-do the UI which could take some time to design right.
