If what that dude said was true, the A6 processor has double the performance of the A5X used in the iPad 3. App devs, particularly game devs, will start targeting those specs as soon as possible (and they will, no matter what anyone tells you). The numberless iPad 3 from earlier this year is still bested by the iPad 2 in a couple of performance areas, because Apple chose to go with the bare minimum spec upgrade to push that 2048x1536 retina screen. Because the iPad 3 still has to push that screen resolution on that bare minimum, apps made for the iPad 4 A6 processor are gonna start having worse performance sooner, kind of like graphically intensive apps on the iPad 1 run now.

There's a reason they're clearing them out on the Apple refurb store at rock-bottom prices, and it doesn't even exist on the Apple product page anymore. It was filler.

I don't mind the new one at all though...wasn't even considering an upgrade 'til next year anyway. Double the CPU power isn't gonna help the battery life, is it? the Mini would be a major MAJOR hit with the kid so may look at that for Xmas. I guess his vast brain has already clicked that playing games without proper controls is for wankstains.

(he's playing touch games on the Vita .... he's also a WS of the highest order then. Anyone want to swap an ipad3 for one only mildly soiled son?)

on the Apple front - i'm getting sick of their bullshit to be honest. The 3G i had all those years back dropped in battery/performance with each upgrade as each step added more bloat and more battery sucking sh1t. Downgrading it via hack restored it to perfect working order and fast as well, but hey - here we are, with my Iphone 4S and from the last upgrade i'm, once again, starting to get shitty battery life and slow performance in basic apps that were working perfectly fine. I -was- getting through a day -easily- on one charge, and now from doorstep to work (which takes, say, 2 hours) i'm now down to about 35% by the time i'm at work. Yes, i've switched off location services - the only difference that made was i'm at 35% and not 0% :/ . No doubt a couple of updates later and it'll be a crawling sack of shit but - hey - you can effectively update for free* to the Iphone 5s (locked in for another 2 year contract)

Meh, time to just jailbreak and take this sh1t out of their hands.

I almost always get the newest iPad (my grad school is all up in apple's sniz and basically requires it) before chickening out and thinking the next one will be that much better. Maybe I'll get the 6th gen one next year

everything that could possibly be causing it is off -

i am doing nothing different on my walk in - in fact, even THAT isn't true because now i don't check twitter on the way in.

All since the update.

Prior to this i'd listen to streaming radio on the way to work, tweet the odd tweet, do an instragram photo or two and have about 70% left. Now it's just borked. If i tweet/instragram or whatever then the battery gets utterly f*cked.

NOTHING other than an update has changed. I've been told by an ex Apple employee that this usually means that I'M doing something wrong, but yeah. There's a pattern emerging

My 4S's battery life is going to shit too; I just assumed they packed in the cheapest battery so that after a couple of years, it's totally shot. Then you have no choice but to upgrade to the latest and greatest iShit that is pinched out onto the market. And I definitely agree that iOS 6 has been a step backwards in terms of performance as well.

That's interesting that there may be more to it than a cheap battery.

My wife's 32GB iPad 1 sells for $300 on Amazon. I will give her my 64GB iPad 3 and buy the iPad 4. I am sure if I left her with the iPad 1 and sold the iPad 3 instead I would make even more money.

I love the suggestion by Apple employees that YOU'RE doing it wrong. Had a similar experience with my sister's macbook when it was clearly a hardware issue.

JohnTV is pretty big on Apple actually. At least that what you notice from the 8-4 podcast.

I think jadedness, cynicism, passive aggressive behavior, and sarcasm are basically easy ways out. There's nothing wrong with liking something and experiencing joy. People are too afraid that someone else will make fun of them for it.

Wait the GPU is the same in the iPad4? So why would games run at a different resolution?

The only lag I've heard of in the iPad3 is image processing and photoshop type of things. I can't imagine an Infinity Blade type of game using a lot of CPU power.

Complaints about fast product cycles are valid if the fast product cycle makes older products obsolete. But that's just not the case with the iPad 3, which will be well-supported for at least the next two years. It is not "obsolete," "old" or "out of date."

As an iPad 3 owner, you don't have to worry about case makers abandoning it, because it's the same size and shape as the fourth-gen. And you don't have to worry about app developers supporting it, because two of the three iPads still being sold (the $399 iPad 2 and the iPad mini) use the same A5 CPU (albeit without the "X" graphics acceleration) as the third-gen iPad.

Apple's trying to move away from the 30-pin dock connector, but that will take years. The iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPad 2, all currently on sale, all use the 30-pin connector, ensuring 30-pin accessories for the future.

So the iPad 3 will have tons of cases. The iPad 3 will have tons of apps. It will have tons of accessories. All it is missing is special-magic-snowflake-bestness.

I don't agree with him. I'd be feeling pretty burnt if I had recently gotten an iPad 3, too- a CPU that's twice as powerful and 4G seems like a pretty big deal to me.
