To be fair, Arde0, I haven't used win 8. But on xbox the ads are mostly just ways to generate news on what is new on xbl. I don't take them as ads so much as I take them as "hey, check out what you can do on xbox live now" it's not like they're trying to make you buy a car with a car ad or something, they're very specific to the exact service you're using.

I must say that now that I've actually used the product the whining from the usual pc crowd is overblown as usual. You still can do everything you use to do on the desktop as before relating to games. It eliminated nothing. Nothing has changed. All it does it put in a microsoft app store/xbox live integration kinda layer situation which will either fall or stand on the quality of the products they put in place. It does nothing to hurt steam from what I've seen so far. In a way its widgets taken to its next logical conclusion step.

I will say that from a business/office perspective I would much prefer windows 7. Much cleaner and to the metal by comparison. For average joe sixpack its probably a push. But that's exactly the problem: if microsoft introduces an app store with xbl games, profiles, friends lists, and all of this comes with win 8 prepackaged that completely undercuts the other services and they'll have to find other ways to do their services. It's like going third party on a Nintendo console now. THAT is the issue, not that you won't be able to run pc games. It is hardly overblown, and they have a reason to be mad; microsoft just butt fucked the pc gaming status quo and now they'll have to finds to go around that.

You're completely overblowing the situation imo which is separate debate from whether Microsoft has a right to do what they want with their own fucking os anyway. But I'll digress as I think the argument is ultimately boring. Steam has not been "butt fucked". It will keep on churning along and going what it does as will other desktop apps. There will also be these metro apps in the ecosystem. No reason to act like the sky is falling.

I know right. Because nobody uses Chrome right and every PC user in the world uses internet explorer and bing and nobody currently uses Steam or other digital distribution services. It's all just going to disappear in a year. The end is nigh!

There is a reasonable worry to have with the idea of MS monopolies in certain cases. Imo this is the not the one to necessarily get your panties in a bunch about. When they actively take away a service you had or make it nearly impossible to use that's when you can put on your worry hat. This metro thing is not going to replace desktop apps. Certainly not as implemented currently in Windows 8. I can safely be Nostradamus on this one.

If the fundamental argument is that the metro ecosystem is a huge issue that will ultimately doom or severely cripple gaming on the PC then yes. Including some of the very things that Gabe Newell himself has said then yes also. If the argument is more along the lines of the flaws of trying to graft a tablet interface into a desktop interface or other actual os issues then less so.

People aren't idiots when it comes to what they want out of things. If Metro apps provide uses that people find useful they will be bought and used. If they don't people will buy desktop apps. And some people will fall in the middle because its not just either or. The world doesn't have to be either or. It's a scale.

8 is in a weird place where Microsoft made 7 so good that I'm completely satisfied with what I have. I'll move onto 8 when I have a reason to, like I upgrade my PC or get a touch screen monitor.

I think a lot of people feel this way. It sort of feels similar to macs once that os hit such a high level that later small incremental improvements didn't really matter to me anymore. Also its sort of a weird time because of how the desktops are trying to find their way in a tablet world all of a sudden.

I have 100+ windows programs categorized into subfolders on the start menu, not counting games. The start screen can't replace that functionality. I don't need to remember the names of all those apps in case I want to run one from the start menu, and the start menu already has 'search' built into it to find apps that way. There are no sub folders on the start screen or ways to tag, label, or group programs as far as I know. I don't like having to use the keyboard every time I want to find or sort through apps, either. It's a big mess like someone's desktop covered with icons. Not to mention the hideous color scheme. The start menu isn't perfect, but I don't see how the start screen replaces its functionality.

I ended up getting a green (stuck?) pixel after upgrading to Win 8. If there's no easy fix then I will rage so hard. I'm a few minutes into the experience and I'm already regretting it!!!

-Why does W8 throw me out of metro when I want to surf the web? There should be a metro native IE app or something. It looks horrible to switch to desktop for this!
-Can't sign in to Xbox Live somehow, apparently they also let me know that my windows region is different from my xboxlive region???
-Can't update Music App
-Photos App doesnt reckognize any pictures in the pictures library
-Steam needs an APP asap

? There's Metro IE (which they just call "IE") and desktop IE. By default links open in Metro IE unless you open them from a desktop app, in which case they open in desktop IE. You can change this by going to desktop IE -> gear button -> Internet Options -> Programs (or go to start screen -> type "links" -> click "Settings" on the right).

They're actually not running, the OS manages their lifetime, suspends them while their offscreen and hibernates them if you're low on memory, so you normally shouldn't have to close them. If you want to close them anyway because they're misbehaving or to clean out your alt-tab list or whatever, you can use one of the following methods:

* Drag the mouse from the top edge of the screen (the cursor should become a hand) to the bottom
* Hit Alt-F4
* Right-click on one of the thumbnails in the switcher bar that appears when you swing the mouse around a left-hand corner, and click close (or just middle-click if you've got three buttons)

OK, this is fucked up, but the rule is that only the browser you set as default gets to have a "Metro" app. If you have Firefox or something as the default, you'll either have to set it to IE or wait for Firefox to release their own Metro version.
