Let's talk about HOME. No, not that dumb social thing Sony released a few years back, but instead the indie adventure game that has the same name. Well, I say "adventure game" and HOME does have some rudimentary puzzles to work your way through, but there's never really a point where your stuck on something and much more straight forward than that. It's more like an interactive mystery novel, with bends and twists that depend on what you do while you're playing.

All the action takes place on a 2D, sidescrolling plane where you control the main character through various locations, all the while picking up [or not picking up] various important objects and making decisions about just how to proceed. The game is built around presenting a narrative, but one that is fluid and constantly changing. There's are right or wrong decisions and many different endings.

This is not a horror game, in that nothing leaps out at your face or attacks you, but rather it presents a constant feeling of dread and claustrophobia [only a small circle of light illuminates your surroundings] and loneliness. It definitely compels you to play it more than once, and at about an hour for a playthrough you don't need a huge time investment.

It's in the newest Indie Royale bundle [along with some other random stuff] so you can get it on Steam for about $4.00.

It's pretty cool, I'll probably play it again for Halloween.

The ending I got on my first playthrough was...inconclusive. I'll definitely play it again and see what I can do differently.

Looks creepy. Is the sound in the video indicative of the sounds used in the game? That low hum feels Lynchian somehow.

The sound is a bit more sporadic than that, but it's still really effective.
