I'm pretty far into this (Sequence 9) and having mixed feelings. The setting is fine, the story sucks, Connor is a terrible protagonist (game would be 10x better with Haytham as the main character), the game is absolutely horrible at explaining anything, it's glitchy as fuck and like 2/3 of the missions are godawful. Despite all this, it's still a pretty fun game and the mechanics remain solid and entertaining. Tomohawking dudes in the face never stops being awesome, the easy auto-platforming still looks pretty cool most of the time and my OCD side still loves collecting everything (aka it's more AC). It's probably one of my least favorite games in the series (Bro>AC2>AC3=Rev>AC1) but I'm having a decent time.

Oh, and give me an entire game of naval missions, those are awesome.

It's sort of a mess of a game. Within it are the elements of a truly great game. But for lots of reasons its a very uneven experience and a shockingly poorly explained one. Literally there are parts of the game I don't understand. You just have to do it a whole bunch to figure some things out. Which is not the way a mainstream game should be.

It's an enjoyable mess imo.

I compare this game to Borderlands 2 which is refined fix of everything in Borderlands 1. That's a really good sequel. This is a game that adds in a lot of stuff but most of it isn't refined and it still hasn't fixed a lot of the core issues with the series that have been in there since the first and second game.

I'll stand by the fact that I think its a good game and an ambitious one even but for all the talk of how long it was in development and how many people worked on it, its a messy messy game. Another good comparison would be Red Dead Redemption which also was a bit of a messy game but they got a ton more right. They delivered on their ambition by comparison.

I just borrowed a copy of this and it's a god damn fucking mess, even with the patch that just went live. Horrible player messaging, inexplicable insta-death instances, idiot buddy AI, the list goes on and on. It's like they didn't do any usability testing whatsoever.

Note that this is coming from someone who LOOOOOVES these games, I even completed Revelations (and enjoyed it) for Chrissakes.

She's a triple agent for the Templars. But this isn't shown or even told to you in-game... supposedly it's revealed in books or some shit. As for me, I read it on wikipedia.

Finished it. This is clearly the shittiest AC game ever made.

2>Brotherhood>Revelations>1>This turd

Just the worst player messaging ever. Incredibly confusing. Shitty missions where you walk from cutscene to cutscene. HORRIBLE ending. Patrice is crying somewhere.

I think I spent about 20 minutes in New York. Ship combat was neato but but that was it. Put this series in the poop bin

I've tried to pick this up again but honestly I don't think I will finish it unless I make a beeline through the main quest. The game is baffling to me at this point since I have forgotten everything. There are a billion icons on the map. I have no idea what they do. The missions are as confusing as ever. I forgot how overly automated the controls were in general. And there are all this little side activities that are so poorly integrated and messaged that I have no idea what is going on. This series must be utterly baffling to newcomers.

I feel like the whole thing needs a big reboot already.  Taking such a long break and coming back to it has really given me a new perspective on where this series is going wrong. Far Cry 3 was fun. This isn't.

Yeah this game was a hot mess. I did not have fun with it at all and it made me question why I feel like I have to play this shit beginning to end.

I thought I had outgrown this because I normally don't do it anymore but the only reason I'm still playing is because I spent $60 bucks on it at launch and because its this really big budget title so I want to see the spectacle of it to a degree and and where the money went. But its certainly not because I'm enjoying the game at all  so that's not a good sign at all certainly. It's like I need to squeeze some value out of it.

This game is also an indictment of a certain philosophy that is rampant that you need to keep adding shit in sequel after sequel. Instead of them adding all this shit, I wish they would just fix their game. A smaller scope and a more fun game would be so much better.

What if I told you that the series has always been like this but you're just now noticing it?  :lol  This series has been off the mark (but frustratingly close to it) from beginning to end.

I really wish we got the medieval stealth game we thought AC1 would be.   That sounded fun.   I can't believe they squeezed out 7 of these games (1, 2, 2-2, 2-3, 3, PSP, Vita) in one gen.  That has to be a record for a brand new IP to start fresh and get 7 iterations/releases in one gen.

I don't disagree the series has always been this way. I've always felt it was a bit over-rated. I just thought AC 3 would be the one where they would actually fix at least some of its issues.

I got this game too from GameFly and it is probably the worst intro this side of Kingdom Hearts. Every sequence is a tutorial so far.

I actually kinda agree. That part was at least interesting to me. The stuff since has been worse and the American History tie ins feel dumb,

Playing some more today. I feel like every mission is purposely poorly designed and instructed to pad out the gameplay. It happens too often to be a coincidence. I feel like they think figuring out what you are supposed to be doing is "gameplay".
