Man I feel ripped off.  Should have waited.  With that new resolution developers are going to target the new specs and then in a few years my new tech is going to be out of date.  Fuck Google.

Nexus 4 has wireless charging through its glass back.

Yes. Keep in mind you can only use it with ATT and T-Mo.

Looks like T-Mo will carry it on-contract. $200 with two-year plan, although that doesn't say if it's the 8 or 16 GB version. Either way unlocked is probably your best bet.

Nexus 4 specs:

Screen: 4.7-inch 1280 by 768 (320ppi)
Cameras: 8MP, 1080p video (back), 1.3MP, 720p video (front)
Storage: 8GB or 16GB
CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5GHz
GPU: Adreno 320
RAM: 2GB
Battery: 2,100 mAH (10 hours talk time, 250 hours standby)
Charging: Wireless (use any Qi-compatible charger)
Radios: HSPA+, Bluetooth, NFC (Android Beam)

Any word on what they are gonna do with the Galaxy Nexus now? I sort of like having a swappable battery, but it's not a deal breaker.

But yea, I think Nexus 4 is a great deal for an unlocked phone. Also like how 4.2 has Swype-style input now.

Galax Nexus as been taken off the Play store, dunno what the carriers will do but you can probably still get one from Verizon for the near future.

What features does Nexus 4 have, andrex? I've never had a smart phone.

Some of the nicer features I've enjoyed about my Galaxy Nexus (4.1):

- Install from web: Click "install" on any app on the Google Play website and it's installed almost instantly on your phone.
- Instant upload: Every video and pic you take can be uploaded to a private folder online for instant backup and sharing. (uses G+, but you don't really have to use G+ to use this feature.)
- Panorama mode: Allows you to take a panoramic photo by moving your phone from side-to-side, instead of taking three pics and merging them together.
- Google Now: Learns stuff about you and offers info and suggestions contextually (like, my phone says the amount of minutes to get to work during a specific window in the morning.) Can also ask it questions like Siri.
- Chrome: Syncs not only bookmarks and autofill data but open tabs too.

Off the top of my head. Still learning about 4.2 as it comes out but it seems like user accounts, Google Music song matching, some kind of photo-sphere thing that builds on panorama mode, and other stuff.

Yup, basically. They also said LTE sucks... a lot of power.

So basically LTE is Google's Flash battle.

Agreed, although I wouldn't be as annoyed if the standard storage was 32/64 GB. That just feels like a lot more room.

GDrive and GMusic makes it a bit better though. I'm up to 22 GB on my GNex but I can probably get rid of 90% of that by deleting all the photos I've taken, which I haven't done since I got it (and I take a lot of pictures.)

S3 sucks, N4 doesn't. There ya go.

I don't know...I mean, sure, the Nexus 4 is quad core with a better GPU but the deliberate omission of an SD slot really grates.

Benchmarks (Nexus 4 is essentially a rebranded, redesigned Optimus G):

Is Google Now good, Andrex?

It's not all THAT useful, but there's clearly potential (which is where a lot of the hype is coming from. See also: this article.) However it has come in handy a couple times. I don't actively use it, though, I imagine it learns you better if you do. I just like seeing the weather updates and commute time when I pull down the notification bar.

I dunno why Andy has such a vendetta against s3/touchwiz I love this thing to bits, tho I've changed the launcher and a few other things but thats the beauty of android it's entirely customizable. S3 is really light and the polycarbonate (at least the blue) looks nice and is really durable. I do find it lacking a little on looks but its got good components where it counts. US version isn't quite as good as international tho, like I get quad core but less ram and a good quality dac instead of whatever junk they put in the us version. Definitely not deal breakers tho.

I popped a 64gb card into my 32gb S3 and now can carry most of my music with me and finally retired my iPod classic. Most important feature to me.

Can't really speak to LTE as I'm not sure what I'd be missing without it

What's wrong with the screen? It's not even pentile anymore, which throws away the biggest wet blanket people were throwing on the GN's screen.

I'm an Android noob and would appreciate a GIII vs N4 rundown.

GS3 has LTE, slightly bigger screen, microSD, and option for more internal storage. Plus it has a removable/expandable battery. Negatives are that it's probably more expensive with or without a contract and it has the Touchwiz software layer which does some extra functions but maybe some lag.

N4 has a brighter IPS screen and a faster processor and it's battery is internal but able to be wirelessly charged (just put it in the dock). The N4 is guaranteed to get quicker updates for a longer time.

Otherwise, those two are basically identical. Same amount of RAM, subjective differences in software. LTE or a micro SD slot can make a big difference but for it's price, the N4 is definitely the better bargain if you're buying the phone unlocked.

Lack of MicroSD support, LTE, and a non-SAMOLED screen doesn't scream "better" to me. So what am I missing? What's the big picture here?

(Other than this being a google phone with stock Jellybean, I guess)

SAMOLED has darker blacks and "poppier" colors but the IPS screen can get brighter and should look sharper since it is not pentile (more sub pixels in each pixel). The big deal about this phone is how cheap it is (it's really fucking cheap!) At the same time, it is one of the highest end phones you can buy only lagging in lack of LTE, microSD, and internal storage space.

I'll be a bit surprised if there's no US version with LTE and more internal storage. Unless Google wants to give other manufacturers some competitive ability.

I do have to say that the glass back nonsense is going to justify an extra few bucks a month in insurance. Even Apple stopped that on the iPhone 5.

It's cheaper per GB and you can stow multiple microSD cards under the battery cover if you want. Going above 16GB is really only necessary if you carry all your music (or porn) at once.

I doubt that the specs will change.  Pretty sure that there will just be the one model with an 8gb and 16gb sku.  I was really hesitant about my Nexus not having an sd card slot but it really doesn't bother me nearly as much as I though....totally understand for some peeps though.

Nexus devices are the same worldwide, except for the CDMA devices which vary only in a few slight areas.

Nexus 4 isn't getting a CDMA version, and Google is very proud of the fact they're only selling a single version (not counting the storage split.)

Have they excluded expandable memory slots from all their Nexus devices? When the only offered storage options re this low it's doubly distinguished mentally-challenged. Even Apple is having a good laugh from that.

The 3GS I've been using since 2009 only has 16GB of storage. And while I've yet to see the "low memory" warning, I've always been very conscious of what to install/store. Now my excuse for tolerating it was that it was a 3 year old handset, however in 2012 it's almost inexcusable.

If it came with a free larger Google Drive storage like the SIII's 2-year 50gb Dropbox deal I might turn a blind eye, but afaik it doesn't.

I'm already using it. But just the free 5gb, atm. Which is why I was suggesting they run an offer to make up for their stupid misstep. $25/year isn't a lot considering the benefits, but it would sure make their SKUs twice as attractive and defensible if they ran a 1-2 year offer.

The new Nexus 4 is everything I hoped the Galaxy Nexus would be when it came out a year ago. I’ve just spent a full day with Google’s new handset, and it feels and performs like a true flagship phone. The build quality and materials used are about as high-end as you can get. The LG-built Nexus 4 is a big step forward for Google’s Nexus line of products.
