Post some scans, maxy.

I don't pay much attention what happens to handhelds.

I'm sure those will pop up somewhere

Let's cast the sails and go back in time! Chrono Trigger's successor!

:bow

Hopefully with better pacing and more reasonable length!

:bow

With the best vignettes in the series!

:bow

This could be the best DQ game of all time, if they play their cards right.

Best DQ game in history gets a remake on Nintendo's handheld. There is no stronger blow Vita could take in the face, no stronger.

Monster Hunter was a much bigger blow. People (myself included) expected that on Vita. No one expected Dragon Quest on Vita.

S-E gave up on localizing DQ in the west, especially after the ds remakes bombed. Simple. So Nintendo took up the mantle by publishing and localizing IX and VI.

DQ4 and 5 were done by S-E of America and Europe. IV and V did horrible numbers. So when DQ9 dropped, Nintendo took up the mantle, seeing a good opportunity for sales. 4 and 5 bombed, Nintendo of America/Europe did 6 and DQMJ2.

I see. What about the FF remakes on the GBA? Those were published by Nintendo too and they obviously predate the DS remakes. SE thought the GBA ports weren't worth the effort either?

I'm pretty sure S-E was not surprised, but mind you we're talking about the west here. Japan's relationship with DQ is not the same as the wests. Nintendo tried all they could to make DQ9 a success in the west, likening it to the next Pokemon.

I'm pretty sure they'll do DQ8 after this if not immediately. It has a lot less things to do for a remake than 7. They just need to fix the alchemy pot, tighten up the battle speed, enable a first person battle mode, ideally.

I'd also love 1-3 3d remakes more than anything. They deserve remakes and I'd love to have access to the entire series on one system.

YES the first trilogy remakes in 3d would be awesome! I played all three on the GBC again over the summer.. DQII would be great if it were expanded in a remake (more equipment, fleshed-out story,  etc...) The game world was so big for its time but it's so empty.

7 is good but flawed as ever fuck. If you're talking story, it's Horii taking his concept with Chrono Trigger and going to town with it but making the length 100+ hours. If it's gameplay, it is a drawn out slog. Wait for 3ds remake so we can see what improvements they've made to pacing (story or gameplay).

Miss one shard, double back and explore (two versions of the same!) dungeon again to find it. Not play for a few months and still missing a shard? Good fucking luck, you'd might as well start the game over.

That's some serious weeaboo shit right there, Borys. For real.

Level-5 developing DQVIII, and IX isn't surprising. The only one developed internally at Enix/Square Enix has been DQX.

That's interesting. I've never really tracked development of the games like that. Enix (then SE) was so synonymous with DQ. I had no idea they've had external studios develop all the previous games.

Is there any particular reason why three different developers have been used to make DQ? Seems like such a lucrative contract that any studio would kill to retain the work.

I think this current gen has shown that consoles have legs and they can recover from a slow start. I wouldn't be surprised if a couple years from now Vita was doing better after a price drop and a major release or two.

In any case, console wars are silly.

My other issue with them is that they basically force you to exhaustively explore every nook and cranny for fear of missing a shard. I like exploration but on my own terms where I can decide whether a given area looks interesting to me or not. Being forced to obsessively scour every town and dungeon doesn't feel like fun exploration, it feels like trying to find your lost keys that have got to be somewhere in your apartment, or wait I could've left them in the grocery store, let's think back and retrace my steps ... I mean, who the fuck wants that experience replicated anywhere.
