Windows 8 - Who cares

Pretty much agree. No really big killer feature. The tablet desktop interface on a desktop isn't intuitive.

Played around with it at Best buy and its definitely a good UI in that it places everything you need at your finger touch. In my case I always have a couple of apps open all the time and rarely see my desktop unless I'm diving into some folders. But even then most of the stuff I have saved on my PC that I peruse are managed by certain applications (like my photographs which Lightroom manages, or my Music which the Zune software sees). So I can see myself acclimating to the Windows 8 experience rather easily.

The only aspect I would find odd is having a massive LCD right in front of me that I have to constantly reach out and touch when navigating the UI. The keyboard and mouse placement can be a comfortable neutral position. In this regard I think it'll be extremely interesting when Kindect gets integrated with Windows 8 and you can do everything that would involve touching the screen comfortably close to your body in the air. Gestures, scrolling and other navigation.

I'm not talking about computer literate people. My mom can use windows 7 to do the small amount of things she needs to do.

I debated installed Windows 8 on her machine and then realized that I would need to explain how to do everything again and then even after I installed it, she probably still wouldn't understand it. To joe six pack I have a feeling that it makes almost no sense. A desktop without a touch screen monitor is not a tablet and not even close. So why pretend it is. That seems to be the fundamental flaw to me at least. Why should a "normal" person want Windows 8 on his desktop machine. It's an os that's not in line with current tech that most people are using at the moment.

Why teach her? Get her an RT tablet and tell her to mess with it to her heart's content.

No viruses and apps from the app store only. And it will be easier for her to swipe from all sides than to try doing that with a mouse/trackpad.

That would be cool.

Straight up touch laptops/all in one PCs don't make sense to me atm, why would you smudge your screen up when you have a trackpad/mouse right there? Maybe on a laptop it wouldn't be such a distinct choice but on desktops it would definitely fall into "use it in the first week to make yourself feel cool, then never use it again when you actually want to use the thing for actual stuff."

have you actually tried touch on a laptop? it's kind of addictive. dunno why you'd want it on desktop though, unless you had a setup like this -> http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/Build/2012/2-030 (skip to 30:35)

No Flash in Metro IE is a mortal sin. It really makes NO SENSE (the workaround is a JOKE, how is this user friendly?)

Its super pretty, but if you been using windows before its really not intuitive, just restrictive in many aspects (like the mail app that when you go into a folder only shows the past 2 weeks of emails.. so then I need to start it up in the browser, but best to use the desktop browser not the metro one... WHY HAVE TWO DIFFERENT BROWSERS ANYWAY, THE CONFUSION)

As for choosing what IE to use as default: go to IE (Desktop) Internet Options --> Programs tab and choose how you open links from there.

Edit: I dunno, but I knew about this thing because it was the same in Windows Phone mail app. Save space I guess?

only having mail sync from the last 2 weeks is pretty standard on a mobile device and that's essentially what the W8 mail app is, a smartphone mail app.

Bought a laptop with windows 8 on it and I hate it. Customization is real clunky and non-intuitive. Not much going on in the store to get me excited about this. Hopefully things change in the coming months.

I want to like Metro, but it seems like you really need a touch surface to fully enjoy it.

Sorry, I missed your question. I was trying to get rid of a bunch of windows I will never use and/or resize them. Also how to figure out how to make the Mail window goto Gmail instead.

I gave up and got a program called Classic Shell that has allowed me to bypass Metro altogether.

Are you talking about tiles? Just right-click them -> Unpin, Uninstall or Resize. You can right-click a bunch of them and unpin all of them at once. You can set up the mail accounts including Gmail in Settings (swing mouse around lower right corner), or just pin the Gmail website to Start (right-click -> pin in "new" IE, or "gear button" -> Pin to Start in desktop IE).

For the most part, if there's something you can't find it's probably either in the right-click commands or in the Charms (search/share/devices/settings). Once you get comfortable with those two things you're pretty set.

But hey, if Classic Shell (or Win7) works better for you, great.

(Image removed from quote.)

Bad UX.

That follows a general pattern of you being able to tap categories/headings to jump to a list of categories/headings, so if you're familiar with it from elsewhere you know what to expect. Besides, all it gives you is a shortcut to the category so if you don't know it you'll just have to scroll down, big deal.

I found this to be the most distinguished mentally-challenged thing about metro from my small amount of time using it. Why have multiple applications? I like metro as a replacement to the start menu in some ways but this made the experience feel really half assed. Based on my initial outing with W8 it felt like a massive fail, especially after 7 felt near perfect for me.

Having "two browsers" sucks, but unfortunately the alternatives at the moment would be to either (a) not have a browser that fits into the new UI model (and pretends to fit into the new app model, and can deliver on the promises customers are meant to associate with the new UI/app model, i.e. unafflicted by the UX/reliability/security degradation that current plugin models carry) or (b) not have a browser that supports many remaining important multitasking and/or extensibility scenarios like side-by-side document workflows, and either alternative would suck a lot more than "two browsers".

Ultimately this is just a reflection of the limitations of the new UI/app model, which is to say it's a reflection of the immaturity of the new UI/app model.
