Sea Punk is a music, design and fashion movement inspired by Windows '95 screensavers, Ecco the Dolphin for the Sega Genesis, the old Netscape Navigator logo and 90:s 3D animation. It thrives on tumblr blogs and twitter.

The 90's were the decade of water. I found a great blog article talking about why this is the case but can't seem to find it anymore.

Is Lone considered "seapunk"? Never really heard of the edm style before, but 90's house/techno is definitely in vogue at the moment. All this dolphin imagery is making me sick though (and its association with hipsters)

these aren't hipsters, they're people who look up "hipster" stuff on the internet and emulate it.

it's okay though, the word has gone through the cultural wringer, perhaps more than any trend ever. It's gotten to the point where anything but branded clothes, blue jeans, and bon jovi is considered hipster.

I remember ~10 years back when retro 8-bit stuff and pixel art and such were in vogue, people on the internet were saying that it showed how well-executed primitive 2D graphics had a timeless quality to them based on craftsmanship and use of limited resources and whatever, while primitive 3D graphics were just inherently and irredeemably bad. I said then that the "90s bad 3D" aesthetic would become retro-cool / nostalgicized once the right amount of time had passed, just like everything else does. And look, what a surprise, it did. But good luck finding my posts from that time to say told you so

There is something beautiful in the digital world about imposing limits on your work and trying to create art from that. I'm always fascinated by people that can make great things in Paint or the amazing work that people can create with demos that are less than 64k.

Unfortunately, Sea Punk falls well short of these lofty goals.

Yeah, I think hipster shouldn't apply here. I think "contrarian" is the better word here. Someone looks at something that obviously sucks, pretends to like it out of irony, spreads to other validation driven contrarians, and soon it rolls into a top Twatter Trend, thus legitimizing it.

I've got a least one record from a few years ago with that aesthetic. (although I guess acknowledging it was a thing before the mainstream noticed makes a person "hipster"

)

it's not so much about individual styles and things that come back...it's more like during the 00s, the 80s made a comeback, and now in the '10s, the 90s are gonna be mined for artistic/cultural artifacts as well.

then in later decades, things like 00's meme culture will become hot again.
