It might be a really cool interactive story but it's not really a "game" per se, much less GAME of the year.

The game or not a game debate doesn't really interest me. What I can clearly state either way is for me Journey was neither a traditional goty or an untraditional goty. And this comes from someone who didn't dislike it. It's a decent enough, pretty enough hour to 2 hour little time waster. Honestly it reminds me of a lot of ios games but nobody in their right minds would give an ios title goty because its a different kinda experience and thing. It's just so weird to see publications fall over themselves trying to gain indie credit by lauding certain titles just to puff themselves up. It's like the equivalent of purposefully seeking out a niche movie to give it best oscar to try to show up Hollywood or something instead of just being honest.

well, it's definitely not a game. There's no debate to be had. if anyone gives a shit, i'll type up why.

although I can't say I care as much about who is calling it game of the year as I do about co-opting art and playing fast and loose with the definition of "game."

So was an ios game I played a couple of days ago called The Room. It would still be weird if somebody called that goty to me instead of perhaps putting it in a specific category where it makes more sense. But opinions and all that.

people going apeshit over flower/journey are cray. They shout to high heaven about minimalism and themes and whatever, seemingly without any knowledge of what the fuck those things are. I thought both those games were cool/worth the money/-time, but there are flash games that do things like minimalism and themes better for goodness sake.

It's like when people went apeshit for Wall-e because it went 20 minutes without anyone talking. hhhnnnnggg, it's so minimal bro

correct, it isn't minimal. But there were a lot of people who argued the same way about wall-e as I see people arguing for Journey on GAF at the moment.
