One of my holiday projects is to build a home entertainment PC box from my bonus monies.  I got tired of lugging around my giant two foot tall tower to play games on my TV.  So I'll be interested to see what kind of results you get.

Agree on the box art stuff. Who cares about that? Internet shut-ins who want to display boxes on their gaming shrines. Digital Download Master Race 4 life.

Edit: I mostly agree on that Far Cry 3 stuff, too. It had some really brilliant moments, but some of the story stuff was not handled as well as it should have been and some parts of it [like most of the side quests] were just checking-those-boxes bland. Still a fun game overall, but there's plenty of room for marked improvement.

Wasn't a fan of Robert picking on the NBA :(

At least he's right that the Lakers suck.

Good episode guys. First time I have listened in quite a while.

I'm looking forward to hearing your cheap home theater PC topic. I just bought a new laptop in June and I'm curious to see how it stacks up.

I haven't listened to the podcast to know it was mentioned, but the thing about building a PC is that it's not ~$600 now, and then $600 again in a few year.  You can upgrade components for relatively cheap and keep the base build going for a while.  And graphics cards tend to include new games for free; when I bought my 560ti last year, it came with Arkham City for Steam.

Works the other way too.  I'm planning on building a new PC soon and I'll probably continue using that 560ti and some other parts (fans) in it.

Just from listening to the specs you guys were talking about I think my laptop was a decent buy. I sorta wish that I would have gotten the 640m in my laptop (I have the 630m) but I did get a laptop with a natural resolution of 1080p so there would be no real hiccups if I decided to game on my TV. I got a Core i7 in the machine with 6gb of RAM and a 750gb hard drive. All that is left for me to get is the will to start buying Steam games rather than console games and I'm good to go.

I also already updated to Windows 8 and I don't see the hate.

HTPCs are fun as hell. I just wish MS sold the wireless PC dongle for the 360 controllers without packaging a controller. I have 6 wireless controllers cause every time I need a new dongle I have to buy the damned controller with it. At least htpcs have replaced consoles for the me and my kids.

Also mame is slow to load off a network share but it works

yeah, my wife and daughter use the HELL out of it for movies, tv, and games. i didn't think it would catch on, but i created a little launcher app for win8 that puts it into "roku", "xmbc", or "steam" mode and it's surprisingly intuitive -- and fast. i'mma add "mame" this weekend...

Speaking of MAME, what launcher do you use? Is there a big comfy couch kind of thing for it?

Since a big part of Mame is guys making cabinets with only a joystick for an interface, there are a shit ton of comfy couch setups for mame.

I think the big 3 for a modern machine are MaLa,  Hyperspin, or Gamex. Hyperspin takes a shit ton of configuring. I personally have used 2 different rom loaders within XBMC but they're sort of a pain and returning to XBMC from playing a game/rom sometimes doesn't work right.

Get Spotify on there as well, and control it with Remoteless. I never use XBMC for playing music anymore.

Also, I find Team Viewer (or similar) a far nicer way to control the PC than a wireless mouse and k/b (for actually doin' thangs like upgrading software etc). For media playback, you just want an actual remote control - I use an old Windows Media Center Remote for XBMC most of the time, which took a bit of hackery to get working. If anyone is interested I can dig up the links.

Yeah I've got a Logitech harmony doing the same thing. The programmable buttons help for application transitions. Since you can program shortcuts to be launched by complex keypresses and you can program keypresses into the Logitech it all works really easily. Previously I had used event ghost for application transitions, and that might be necessary on a non-programmable remote, but it can be a huge pain in the ass.

My mp3 library is too bloated to use. I need to spend a weekend getting rid of a ton of stuff. Otherwise I just use pandora.

What's Roku mode Van Cruncheon?

Patrick on Giant Bomb has mentioned doing the same thing each time an episode would come out.
