No, I just didn't think they'd have money to go after anyone.

SEGA has access to a shit-ton of cash if they can justify it.  Their parent company rolls around in filthy pachinko lucre all day and all night.

I mean, it's probably a good move if you ever want to play a Saint's Row 4.  Long term who knows?

In before EA outbids them.

Just happy someone swooped in for Volition. Also happy it wasn't EA because, though EA has been better about doing original IP and stuffs, I still feel like they live to destroy any inherent company culture, and eventually cast aside the gutted goose once the golden eggs are no longer produced.

Sega - Relic
Ubisoft - South Park game and Montreal dev studio
Take 2 - Vigil and Darksiders franchise (might just keep the IP and not the staff)

Ubisoft buying THQ Montreal is funny because Patrice Desilets left Ubisoft for it.

others

Quote
Sega agreed to purchase Relic
Koch Media agreed to purchase Volition and Metro
Crytek agreed to purchase Homefront
Take 2 agreed purchase Evolve and
Ubisoft agreed to purchase Montreal and South Park
We expect these sales to close this week.

edit: Evolve might be Turtle Rock's shooter.  People originally behind Counter Strike and Left 4 Dead.

full letter

http://kotaku.com/5978429/this-is-the-letter-that-thq-sent-to-employees-today

Quote
To All THQ Employees:

We now have the answers we've been seeking through our financial restructuring and
Chapter 11 case. While much will be written, here are the facts of the bids and auction
that occurred:

Yesterday morning, we received a competing bid for the operating business,
along with Clearlake's offer, and numerous offers for separate assets.
During an auction process that lasted over 22 hours, the final conclusion was
that the separate-asset bids would net more than a single buyer for the majority
of the company.

Shortly, we will, present the results to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, which must
concur with our assessment.

The proposed sales of multiple assets is as follows :
Sega agreed to purchase Relic
Koch Media agreed to purchase Volition and Metro
Crytek agreed to purchase Homefront
Take 2 agreed purchase Evolve and
Ubisoft agreed to purchase Montreal and South Park
We expect these sales to close this week.

Some assets, including our publishing businesses and Vigil, along with some other
intellectual properties are not included in the sale agreements. They will remain part of
the Chapter 11 case. We will make every effort to find appropriate buyers, if possible.

What this means for employees

We expect that most employees of the entities included in the sale will be offered
employment by the new owners. However, we cannot say what these owners may
intend, and there will likely be some positions that will not be needed under the
new ownership. You should receive notice this week or early next week if the new
owners intend to extend employment to you. Please note that the terms of your new
employment, including pay and benefits, may be different from the current terms of
your employment with THQ.

If you are an employee of an entity that is not included in the sale, we regret that
your position will end. A small number of our headquarters staff will continue to be
employed by THQ beyond January 25 to assist with the transition. THQ has sufficient
resources to pay these employees for work going forward, and we will be contacting
these employees immediately to ensure their continued employment during this
transition period. We are requesting the ability to offer certain severance pay to
minimize disruption for employees of non-included entities as they determine the next
steps in their careers.

We know you will have many questions about this news. We'll be meeting tomorrow
when we return to talk through this announcement and to answer any questions you
have. You will receive a benefits fact sheet and FAQs with answers to some questions
that may be on your mind. Please review these materials closely.

A personal note

The work that you all have done as part of the THQ family is imaginative, creative,
artistic and highly valued by our loyal gamers. We are proud of what we have
accomplished despite today's outcome.

It has been our privilege to work alongside the entire THQ team. While the company
will cease to exist, we are heartened that the majority of our studios and games will
continue under new ownership. We were hoping that the entire company would remain
intact, but we expect to hear good news from each of the separate entities that will be
operating as part of new organizations.

For those THQ employees who are part of entities that are not included in the sale, we
are confident that the talent you have displayed as part of THQ will be recognized as you
take the next steps in your career.

Thank you all for your dedication and for sharing your talent with the THQ team. We
wish you the best of luck and hope you will keep in touch.

Sincerely,

Brian Farrell
Chief Executive Officer

Only it's not.

Relic is so valuable because Games Workshop is extremely protective of the 40k license. Owning Relic means you'd be in a good position to acquire the rights to the 40k IP since Games Workshop and Relic have a fantastic working relationship. SEGA and Creative Assembly currently have the rights to make Warhammer fantasy games. SEGA having both would put them in an amazing position to make a lot of money because there's a lot you can do with those IPs outside of RTS games.

Relic had more bidders than Saints Row at higher prices. So it makes it more valuable HTH.

If nobody made a bid, THQ would've possibly taken it to the grave. So they made a bid but 2k really like what they saw, apparently and scooped it up.

in a weird way it kinda works out for them ( unless take-two went all dickish and got another dev to finish it)

Seems Koch Media is excited.

http://www.news-gazette.com/news/courts-police-and-fire/2013-01-23/updated-volition-chief-sees-very-positive-future.html

Quote
Volition's general manager, Dan Cermak, who was in Delaware for the auction, said it appears the studio will remain in Champaign and the future looks "very positive" for Volition under Koch Media.

"I haven't had a chance to sit down with (Koch officials) except for a few moments, and they were very positive," Cermak said in an email shortly after the bid results were released.

"They love Saints Row and are very happy to own its creator," he said, adding that "Volition is not moving."

Saints Row 3 was the only one I finished and that was solely because I thought it was funny and wanted to see what happened next.

Never felt that way about the second one which I got about halfway through and never finished. Mainly because I didn't really care about any of the story stuff and didn't find it funny. I wasn't immersed. Opinions and all that.

I'm probably more of a fan of Volition going to one of the more traditional publishers but we'll see how it turns out I guess.

Thank God the WWE license is in other hands. THQ and Yukes were just awful.
