Game of the generation
« on: December 20, 2012, 07:41:54 AM »
Now that this gen is basicly over, what would your game of the gen be?

For me, I guess, it would have to be Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. A game that redefined FPS for a whole generation. Still the best COD to this day, the Chernobyl level <3 Amazing multiplayer too ofcourse which kept me playing for a hundred hours at least.

The level of grittyness this had was just boner inducing.

Runner up, just because it's a pure game with great sound and visuals.

I see what you did there Borys :)

Wow is technically last gen I think since it came out before the 360. If one can count that way. Otherwise it would be my GOTG too.

I liked SMG, but I didn't play it and have my mind blown like other all-time greats. That's a pretty sad statement on the quality of the other games released this generation if people consider it the best.

Game

Of

The

Generation

Dem chills. Dem smiles as you play it. The level design. Perfect game. 11/10. No other answer is correct for me, and it's been that way since I first played it. Beat that game in like two-three days, did the second set of stars. Replayed it AGAIN a year later, same awesome shit.

MW brought me into this gen and "HD" gaming, so it's definitely up there for me. MW2 was good too, but something about it didn't feel as good as the original. Got bored with the franchise after Black Ops.

Best systems: Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.

Between the two of them I have 100 games. Time well spent on most of them. Best system race since SNES vs Genesis, two platforms with unique forms of gaming in the midst of Hollywood gaming embrace on consoles. DS has good story-based genres (rpgs, adventure games) while psp lead the charge with arcade pick up and play gaming (racing, puzzle, action, strategy). The result? Two systems that complimented each other like a glove. When one had a down period, the other was booming and had something new on the horizon.

Handheld gaming absolutely murdered console gaming this generation if you're the type of gamer that appreciates unique, fresh experiences.

Handheld GOTG: Crush, Dragon Quest IX.

Nice summary Himu but funny how you said handheld gaming = unique, fresh experience and then named Dragon Quest fucking 9 as GOTG.

Amazing game but it is anything but fresh and unique.

Um. I also listed Crush. Whether DQIX is fresh and unique is impertinent to handheld gaming's oeuvre. It's a personal choice of handheld GOTG, since it's my favorite ds game.

Plus, Crush is unique as shit.

Portal and Mario Galaxy

Portal 2 had better puzzle design, but Portal's gameplay was fresh at the time.

Same deal with Mario Galaxy.

COD4 easily belongs on some list. EVERYONE is trying to take from it in some form.

Angry Birds cemented mobile games as a "thing" -- now you have everyone trying to make it big (and failing miserably). while also introducing us to horrific "physics" games and 3-star crap.

Can I preemptively give it to PSO2?

If not I'd say it's a tosser for me between Yakuza 3 and Bayonetta

I was thinking about this earlier, actually.  Don't think I can pick one between Fallout 3, Skyrim and Diablo 3.  I guess I'd say Bethesda is my developer of the gen, for sure.

Fallout 3/Skyrim

Its a weird gen to quantify...I basically agree with everything in this thread:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=504949

but I've also been buying or getting backlogged on new releases on a monthly basis.  And I have a good chunk of my favorite games from the past between my XBL and PSN accounts, thanks to HD ports and classic system roms/isos on each store.  Even a bunch of games I never got to play before.  They went crazy re-releasing just about everything that was popular and even a bunch that had a niche fanbase but with good critical reviews.

I've bought more than ever, but all my favorite franchises got fucked in the ass in one way or another and they all happened to be Japanese franchises.

I'll just pick a couple

COD 4: Completed what Halo 2 started and turned me into an mp player. I think Black ops 2 is a better game but nothing hit harder than COD 4 initially.
Fallout 3: The first game that made me get the whole Bethesda thing.
RDR: Best and most novel open world game of the gen.
Mass Effect 2: For a time made mass effect as relevant to me as Star Trek.

Lots of great games this gen but those were just on another level for me.

Bioshock is a game that I feel, had it come out later into the generation and taken better advantage of the tech would have been right up there.  It's still a really good game but has aged kind of poorly in some aspects.

Fallout New Vegas :-[ Pretty much everything I wanted a 3d Fallout to be.

Incredibly sad that the servers were pulled - game was brilliant. With a few tweaks in a follow up and an expansion of the online war thing and this could have been even more incredible. :bow From Software :bow2

the big thing was also the servers didn't come online right away - and it wasn't very clear that the single player mode was simply to just teach you how to build/handle the different mech types. So as a single player game it's utterly awful. But damn... the multiplayer.... sooooooooooo good. I can't believe other systems haven't stolen a load of the ideas.

This post is terrible. This gen didn't start getting balls out amazing for me until 2010. 2007 wax great, but once GTAIV and FFXIII hit, the hits kept coming.

Weeaboos hate this gen because almost EVERY main stay series went to shit. EVERY SINGLE ONE.

Final Fantasy -> shit
Resident Evil -> shit
Metal Gear Solid -> shit
Zelda -> shit
Devil May Cry -> shit
Ninja Gaiden -> shit
Metroid -> shit

All this and more. We can take this further:

Splinter Cell -> shit
GTA -> shit

Thankfully for many games on this list there were replacements (ie. NG/DMC -> Bayo or GTA -> SR).

Also, for all the great games listed in this thread, they're all SAFE. Please direct me to the Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarters, or the Dark Clouds, the Bully's, the SSX's, the Mister Mosquitos of this gen? You can't. Because they don't fucking exist. I think criticism towards this generation is fully warranted. It is the safest generation I've ever witnessed as a gamer. Sure, lots of great games happened, but NOTHING aside from Portal, Red Dead Redemption, Dead Rising, and Mario Galaxy blew my socks off in regards to how damn original it is.

That's a bad comparison. I don't have to go out of my way to find music that isn't safe. The original games this gen were mostly on handhelds or indie, but mostly on handhelds. If the music industry comparison were true, there would be easily an underground and unsafe alternative for console gaming. For console gaming there isn't one. Unless you want to count xbla/psn, but most of those are retreads of games I grew up playing when I was a kid (and I like it that way).

There are some, yes. Those games are pretty good examples, but it doesn't take away from the fact that they were far from the norm. In previous generations, you didn't exactly have to play outside the mainstream in order to find a unique experience. Take 2001 for example, Devil May Cry. A new video game on the market that made its own genre. Grand Theft Auto III, self explanatory. I am mostly talking about the mainstream; hidden gems will always exist. I can't say with a straight face that any of these mainstream games, aside from games like Portal tried to be different and not buck the trend.

I think on a very objective scale, games were definitely more me too compared to past generations. But that's what happens when you have to sell 2 million copies just to break even.

The mainstream audience is people who play Madden, Call of Duty, and maybe a racing game. You can't expect them to be interested in original games. However, if you take a look at handheld systems, smaller console titles, and indie development for PC, you'll find plenty of original and iconic games. For instance Minecraft will leave a far greater impression on society than the PS2 games you mentioned.

Edit: You're right about the budget thing. We have gotten plenty of "me too" games from the larger publishers. I also get the impression that most of the weak Call of Duty and World of Warcraft clones failed miserably.

Minecraft, I think, is a big exception. And you raise a good point.

And it's one of the few games like Portal that buck the trend. And I disagree, I think the masses do care about original experiences (in some limited way) or else games like DMC, SSX, GTAIII wouldn't have gotten off the ground in the first place.
