phantasy star thread
« on: December 21, 2012, 09:11:17 AM »
Here's a general Phantasy Star thread!

I've known about the series forever, but haven't played much.  remember looking at screens of PS1 in some of the first issues of gamepro and thinking it looked awesome /old man.  I'd watch my buddy play PS2 and PS3 and attempt to explain the story...I remember being mindblown by PS3-- he'd have new characters every time I went over.   Then for a long time nothing happened.  I got an Xbox with PSO but never took it online...dabbled in PSO:BB after that.

Now I'm playing PSO:BB on SCHTHACK servers and downloaded the Phantasy Star Collection for PS2 off japan PSN...comes with english, walk speed options, easy modes that boost meseta/experience and make shit less of a grind.  Gonna go through all of them 1, 2, 3, 4.

how long are these each?

talk about phantasy star

The GBA version of Phantasy Star took me a bit under 20 hours, but I didn't draw any maps myself. Phantasy Star II is a lot longer. I probably spent around 40 hours with it. Phantasy Star III is so boring that I gave up.

i started PS1 on normal, got up a few levels but died a lot.  then I went to easy and double xp + meseta was nice, then I went to very easy which is quadruple xp + meseta...then I bought the best of everything.  Now I'm like level 12 or 13 in medusa's cave...and i'm still wandering and getting lost enough to almost die :lol   old school RNG ftw!

My friend, you need a pen and paper right next to your grubby mits when you play PS1. Gotta sketch out them dungeons!

For assholes like me who grew up with PS on the Master System/Genesis, PSO was and always will be a massive letdown.  No interest in it.  The original four games are all incredibly awesome (well, III is pretty flawed comparatively) and all, in my opinion, highly superior to the other rpg output from that era.  They're the gold standard and always will be.

But seriously, fuck a bunch of PSO.

Yup, what Triumph said... it's my personal favorite RPG series of all time. Not sure how long each of the games take because they don't keep track of time and of course I was little back when I first played them so I probably took forever. PS4 will probably take the least amount of time though because you don't really need to grind (unlike one or two) and the battle speed is FAST.

how about the diplomatic approach...fuck sega for dropping one for the other instead of making both PSO and mainline PS games.   there's room for both, but sega is sega.

I guess I can't really get accurate times on these games, if I play them at double speed.  the funny part is, very easy mode in PS1 feels just like a modern rpg-- you're usually able to conquer everything, but occasionally it tightens up and you have to use healing items/magic, but you have plenty of both, so it's not really a problem.  I can't imagine playing on normal.  I'd be dying just as much the whole game as I did in the first half hour or so.  The game is relentless...

I guess my problem with PSO was the time frame it came out in, and the fact that Diablo II existed and I wasn't a console only dirtperson back then.  I guess if you didn't have a computer of any sort back then and wanted to play a half-rate arpg lootfest, uh then PSO would be "good"?  I took it as a personal insult twice over- not only was I not getting any more traditional PS games, in their place I was getting an inferior version of my favorite genre.  NO SALE.

...I'm not very good at diplomacy.

this thread reminds me; anyone know how to transfer Kega saves between computers? i finally started playing 1 last summer but stopped after i couldnt get kega to load my shit that i transferred from a different computer.

always wanted to play through the series since its so highly regarded by old-school jrpg players. i fuckin loved jrpgs back then and played the snes final fantasies obsessively. that there is another game out there of similar quality seems almost impossible to me, and i was never able to try it out for myself because it was so damn expensive.

Huh, I love me some PSO but never really fucked with the 'offline' games in the series since I was a kid with only one machine per gen and those machines were N branded back in the day :-X

I ended up going in circles for about a half hour in medusa's cave.  I found the stone guy and thought I'd have to kill Medusa to break the spell or something.

Turns out I had to secure a town pass, then a passport to fly to another planet, where I traded an urn for a cat that talks and has the cure for the guy.  That was my second guess!

Eh I love PS, it's my favorite series of all time. I have no hate in my heart for PSO though, not the same people that made the single player games. I love and appreciate both lines of PS
