Mass Effect 3 is probably the only game in history that had people gushing about how awesome it is until the stupid choice in the end. Now its suddenly bad? I hope you guys remember that the ending was perfect until that stupid final choice. Which in the end doesn't matter.

The hyperbolic reaction to Mass Effect 3 is bullshit. It's far from perfect (same deal with 1 and 2), but it's still a damn fine game with some really solid, series-defining moments and the most refined mechanics of the three. There's no question Mass Effect and BioWare are getting EA'd pretty badly, but I don't think it makes much sense to fling the criticism directly at the games.

I have the same feelings about Resident Evil 6. Certainly a flawed game, but I haven't played a third-person shooter that kept me at least somewhat entertained for nearly 30 hours on the first playthrough, and this one did. It's blasphemous that Metal Gear Solid 4 gets accolades in the press and is excused for being a big clunky piece of shit, when Resident Evil 6 is big and clunky in many of the same ways but actually manages to have rewarding gameplay for most of its length.

RE6 controls and plays like shit and if the demo is any indication, is a total C game.

Mass Effect 3 plays similarly to past ME games, but apparently the ending is atrocious, but anyone who thought Bioware could pull off a good ending was an idiot to begin with.

These comparisons don't work because their situations are completely different.

I dunno about bt being "basic". Around release, it was seen as very controversial. A lot of people didn't understand nor like the seed system. Also, bittorrent wasn't that great with slower connections. I was lucky to get 100 kb/s on most torrents I dled back in the day. Took an hour to dl a Naruto ep. Bittorrent had an uphill battle for taking over irc as the go to pirating client for a while when Kazaa and Morpheus were getting butt raped by the fed. It took a lot of people to finally buy into it and I don't think torrents became like, de facto standard until like 2005-2006. I still know a lot of people who don't know what torrenting is, but they sure as fuck knew morpheus or kazaa.

Well I meant the UI for the Windows client. I think it was something like this:

Worst game I played this year was Eureka Seven: Attack the Legend (PS3). Forget the fanboy butthurtism of ME3 and RE6. Those are still playable games. Attack the Legend is the real shit.

This is beyond janky fun, this is an absolutely unplayable mess. The controls are groingrabbingly horrible and nonexistant. I have no clue what the fuck you're really supposed to do other than keep pushing buttons in the hopes that you defeat the enemy mechs.

Bandai/Banpresto stuff is universally crap, isn't it? Is this one of those?

I clearly remember the official client looking like that, might have been a different iconset for the buttons though. It was with the old blue/purple icon which I still think is awesome.

I think by the time I actually wanted to use BT, uTorrent had hit the scene and was still king of the hill (and remained so until like, two years ago. But I use Transmission now anyways because Linux rulez.)

Well MGS4 is another game that received high praise until shortly after it came out and now gets shitted on.

And I don't really care what other people were saying about ME3. I went back and re-read my impressions of the game during and shortly after it came out. My opinion is mostly the same though it was soured by the ending and soured even more over time due to retrospect. I think you're wrong in saying the end doesnt matter as well.

Out of all the big-budget releases I played this year, Resident Evil 6 was the worst.  Still haven't finished Mass Effect 3 and didn't even think of trying Ninja Gaiden 3.  I'm sure the latter would be my choice if I played it.

The "over-hyped import-only shit game of the year" award goes to Capcom's EX Troopers- it's just a tps, but the game is far too easy (to the point of boredom) and the level design is awful.  I played it for about two hours and shelved it.  Need to sell it off.

The end of ME3 was unsatisfying and people were simply expecting something more interesting after having invested a lot of time into three games. There are unaddressed plot holes and untied ends.

Even though they improved the core combat they removed most of my favorite characters and replaced them with a weaker new cast. Another issue I have with it is that each new game in the series is less of an RPG and more of a bro shooter.

They're still all good games and worth playing, but I would have preferred if the series had moved in a different direction.

Keeping it vauge, without spoiling it too much (ME games are still in my backlog), what was so bad about ME3? I think I might have vaguely heard of some kind of Space Magic copout but don't really know

- The game relies on systems called "galactic readiness" and "EMS" which dictates the state of the end of the game. The system is represented by a bar that fills up and a number. This system is not very well explained and is entirely abstract in terms of understanding how it will affect the nature of the end-game. You will get halfway through the game and fill the bar but still be able to add to the number. So which is important? What number do I need to get a good ending? It's poorly contextualized.

- The side-content that generally adds to the GR and EMS is almost entirely sup-par. It involves "overhearing" NPC characters talking about something they wish to acquire or reacquire. You then automatically get a sidequest popup and need to go and find the item. The actual gameplay involved is simply flying off to a solar system, scanning it and then choosing a planet that may have the item. Once you have it, you take it back to the person. This completely lacks any sort of meaningful gameplay and is comparatively  much worse than the side content from past ME games.

- Scanning in general is a poor experience. When you scan a solar system it increases "Reaper awareness". Essentially when that is maxed, a little teenie enemy ship appears and you have to pac-man your way out of the solar system. If you get caught you are hit with a GAME OVER screen and it immediately dumps you back to the SAME system you just loaded into with NO consequences. It's a completely useless and pointless mechanic. This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't critical to the game. You MUST scan to find items to increase your numbers. Worse yet, you're finding random context-less things like maybe a "Spec-ops team" or a "lost frigate" or whatever. These are items for your military strength but are just numbers and mean nothing. At no point is doing this "fun" and is just padding.

- The other side-content is called "N7 missions". These were in Mass Effect 2 and were mostly pretty OK little missions that had their own self-contained stories. In ME3? They are the multiplayer maps that you play singleplayer for a period of time.

- The entire first and last missions are awful. They are poor examples of scripted "roller-coaster" missions. The latter falls into the trope of "THROW EVERY ENEMY AT THE PLAYER!!".

- One of the key components to Mass Effect is making your own Shepard. You make his face. You make his backstory. You also decide what kind of person Shepard is. Is your Shepard a dick who doesnt care about anything but the mission? Or is he a saint that helps the weak. In Mass Effect 3 they attempt to force character traits to your Shepard. There's a sub-plot running through the game that attempts to humanize Shepard but not only does it fall completely on its face but as I said, it goes against what they've done in the past. If your Shepard has always been a space asshole he now is a nice guy in one scene then back to being a complete dick the next. It breaks the illusion that this is your character. Now for me? My Shepard was a saint but it still sucked because the actual content to the sub-plot is terrible.

- And the end. The end of the game is nonsensical. It tried to be artsy and bold but instead is just lunacy. The fact that two critical pieces of content (From Ashes, Leviathan) are locked away behind DLC is fucking disgusting. From what everyone says, they add needed context to the entire story.

- Overall the game feels like a rush-job. It feels like they took Mass Effect 2, stripped it down to it's core, then bolted on a number of poorly thought-out and half-baked systems. It's a disappointing experience that removes any interest I have in playing Mass Effect games.

Didn't they try to claim that the companion stuff like the iOS and Datapad added to this "readiness", but it turned out you needed to grind them to ridiculous levels to have it mean anything?

Not sure. But I did forget something

- At launch you basically had to play the multiplayer to get your numbers high enough to get the best ending. I believe they fixed this later but I had to play the MP for about 3-5 hours. The MP is pretty OK but that's not the point.

I have some more to say.

- Mass Effect 3 could have been it, man. It could have been the stamp that justifies this generation. A sci-fi RPG trilogy that spanned the entire generation? It could have been it. I know that there are plenty of examples of a series that falls flat at the end in this and other mediums but it doesnt excuse it. Instead of being that stamp, it's just merely OK. It suffices as a video game and nothing more.

Because of the 3rd game, the series is completely tarnished. Does it make the previous two games bad? Of course not. But when people look back on the ME series this generation it's impossible for this fiasco to not be at the forefront in their mind.

ME3 is a decent game, ME1 was a much worse game mechanically speaking. It has some issues, but it did some really interesting things and did most things well. If there's anything TRULY shitty about ME3, its Bioware bending over for ending whiners and releasing that patch. Also, the game had two pieces of DLC that probably SHOULDA been part of the main game.

People can not like the game but shittiest for the year? Are you REALLY playing videogames if you cant find something worse? You can list out the stuff you don't like about the game but I can do that with ANY game. All I see in your stuff is a lot of feels and hyperbolic language and really that's TOTALLY ok- but that makes it YOUR biggest disappointment- not shittiest game. I didn't LOVE ME3, I liked it- I thought it did a lot of neat things- I think yeah it fell on its face a fair share- but god damn if I played plenty of games that were way worse this year but got a pass because people left their feels at home.

I wonder how the crap trifecta of DA2, ME3 and TOR ( which i enjoyed for 20 hours as f2p but is a disaster none the less) will affect future Bioware sales.

Thats a fickle audience to please. Bioware was doing good making million selling rpgs to a crowd that didnt have much to choose from. A good crowd to cater too. They are alienating their core customer.

It sounds bad but not Dragon Age 2 bad.

That's true. ME3 was actually pretty good overall, but DA2 was refried poop from the very beginning.

Wreck-it Ralph

I know it's just a licensed movie game, but considering the subject matter and the people behind it versus the actual quality of the game, it somehow shatters those low expectations.

Even calling it a 'flash game' is giving it too much credit. Yet, they charged 30-50 dollars for it.

anyone who thinks me3 is worse than me1 is a damn fool. fistful is putting himself in the same category as nerds that love ueda games - they just want their games to have some FEELS, man. if you liked me2 because it was a decent tps with choose-your-own adventure space shit, then you will most likely enjoy me3. if you want a SCI-FI EPIC that you can point to and say "LOOK MA, I DIDNT WASTE MY LIFE BECAUSE THIS GAME IS ART AND BETTER THAN A PRIMETIME-TV-WATCHING MORON LIKE YOU COULD EVER COMPREHEND" then yes you will be disappointed. it's definitely not perfect, but it's really damn far from a bad game.

I liked ME2 because it was a cool as shit sci-fi romp going to tons of places, with tons of awesome characters, and told a cool as shit story.

I can see why people were pissed.  If you were in it for the story, a bad ending can really kill the works.  If you were in it for the choices, it kind of ignored your choices and railroaded you into the ending it wanted.  If you were in it for the gameplay, well then, you were fine, I suppose.

But in ME, the choices are a huge part of the gameplay.

ME1 had a better story, quests, music, characters, and hub areas.
