What's the last song that Mtv popularized?
« on: January 02, 2013, 02:00:39 PM »
I was talking to someone age-appropriate today and we were talking about music and whatnot. We both grew up when Mtv kind of dictated what people listened to. So, we both remarked how most of the artists that were on the New Years Eve show were internet created (Psy, Beiber, Karmin, etc). This isn't news, but just made me think when was the last time you can peg a song/group's popularity directly to Mtv's influence?

Yeah Yeah Yeah's "Maps" ?

Isn't Bieber TV created and the internet just joined in because of it's post-ironic lunacy?

As for MTV-created, I don't really know. I get a feeling it would be a song associated with a reality show or reality tv character. It depends on when MTV last played music vids.

i don't get why mtv doesn't do this shit anymore. they'd be making bank beyond fucking jersey shore. if they had exclusive rights to bieber's new video, they'd be rolling in cash. Like say, they have an exclusive deal where they get to air the video for a month before it hits youtube? Or better yet, only they can put their vid on youtube via mtv's youtube channel?

mtv should be using youtube at maximum for their shit.

just shows how out of date the oldguard are.

I like that new Game song that samples Zombie Nation, lol. But yeah I agree, the namedropping gets old fast. (I have a friend who is a big fan of the Game).

Honestly, I haven't really watched music videos on MTV since the heyday of grunge - Smashing Pumpkins, Temple of the Dog, and Soundgarden are some of the last music videos I remember :P

In Da Club's success had nothing to do with MTV, and everything to do with the Interscope machine+Dre and Eminem cosign. It was also a reflection of east coast rap still dominating sales.

MTV's impact can better be measured in the success of indie records. Smaller artists/bands took chances with interesting/innovative music videos, and were able to translate big MTV plays into radio spins. I remember when even Detroit radio wasn't playing the White Stripes when Fell In Love With A Girl came out. After the video blew up all of a sudden stations remembered they were a local act and started supporting them. Also Modest Mouse's Float On had a huge video and translated into record sales.

A good rap example would be Lupe Fiasco. He made quite a splash on the mixtape circuit and got a big deal, but even the Kanye and Jay-Z cosigns didn't really make him a big name. The Kick Push video was pretty successful and helped launch his career despite a lack of radio play initially.

I'm talking about the US market, which was the largest record selling country at the time, and had the largest MTV audience. Dre and Em guaranteed 50 would be the next big thing.

I remember when that record came out and blew up radio. Then the video came out, but it was already huge at that point. Wanksta had come out the previous year, was a top 15 hit, and had already established 50 Cent as the heir to NY rap, plus the west coast was checking for him due to Dre. I think people have forgotten how different things were back then. The song was literally being played 24/7, before and after the video. The album sold 10 million records. Hell, it was HUGE worldwide

Yup pd is right. Em and Dre championed 50 just like how Dre championed Em.

It was a difference era. Em and 50 Cent got the big Dre co-sign and ultimately became worldwide superstars. Today, Kendrick Lamar got the Dre co-sign and his album just went gold, which is a big success in 2012/2013.

It is. Very happy it has achieved commercial and universal critical success. But it's interesting that what is considered commercially successful today would almost be a flop 15 years ago. Gold is the new platinum unless you're Drake or Lil Wayne

This was another one of the last songs MTV popularized and they really tried hard with this one.  Constant airplay and they ran this special that said Houston Texas the future of rap.  Then it just kind of disappeared.

...and another one.

 :bow In da Club :bow2

Sure, Em and Dre championing 50 Cent was the ultimate reason for the success of In Da Club, but of course it did help that the song itself was such a incredibly hot tune.

The Experiment gets it btw. MTV helped break regional songs that didn't get much play on the east or west coast. The biggest rap songs at that time were NY shit (Diddy, Camron, 50 Cent, etc), with a few southern anthems (Nelly, Jermain Dupri) popping up here and there. If you weren't Outkast or Eminem, you were out of luck as a non-NY male rapper. Look at 2001-2005

That Houston shit managed to break the mold with Paul Wall, Mike Jones, etc.
