is the 3D effect useless?
« on: January 06, 2013, 11:47:52 AM »
I am thinking Nintendo made a mistake implementing the 3D in the 3DS. Sure at first glance it was cool and all, and I remember being wowed playing Mario Kart with it. But now I am always turning the slider off. The 3D effect is a gimmick that is bothering your eyes and does not really affect the gameplay at all.

btw I feel the same about the movies coming with the 3D these days. It adds nothing to the experience.

I would argue that it is more important in movies than video games. At least in movies when it is done well, it helps draw you into the movie.

But overall, yea I tend to avoid it if possible.

i find racing games use the effect best, everything else is "haha, pretty cool" for five minutes and then you turn it off

this is for pc games, haven't had a chance to mess around with a 3ds much

This.

It kinds cool in some games but my need to actually interact with video games causes issues with 3d gaming instead of the passive experience it is with movies.

3D really feels like it's pretty much done already. Yeah, there's still the 3DS and there are still 3D movies but it just feels like nobody gets excited about it anymore, not like they did 3 years ago.

Everyone was so certain that 3D was going to take off this time that I'm sure Nintendo in 2009-2010 when they firmed up that technology thought it would last for several years at least.

I have a 3D TV and the only time it gets used for 3D stuff is when someone new visits the place, says "Oh cool, a 3D TV" and we watch some TV for a few minutes with it and then we take off the glasses and never put them on again.  In my defense, every TV over 50" at the store I bought it from had 3D capabilities.  I didn't go out of my way to get a 3D TV and since it came with two free pairs of glasses, why not I guess.

If we could get 3D that wasn't blurry and didn't require glasses, that might be different situation.

tri-monitor for racing games is the nirvana, at least until oculus emerges from the vapour of time.

and yes, 3D is trash. 60fps makes it slightly more bearable, but it's never anything less than a relief when you take off the glasses, walk away from the demo station and commit the horribleness to unwanted memory.

It's pretty useless. There are certain situation in like a platformer that the added depth perception might help you time a jump better or whatever, but that could also be fixed by just changing the camera angle. Mario 3DS forces you in such perspectives sometimes so having the 3D helps, but that's contrived.

It's a neat effect that's almost never worth the compromises for me.  I don't want to be wearing glasses, or trying to keep in that tiny 3ds sweet spot, or anything like that.  If we had holograms or someway to deliver the experience in a better way, I'd be fine with it.

still, I found it's beneficial in first person games, since the effect creates the sensation of having a greater field of vision.  helps in other games too, but most noticeable in first person games.

and this is more on the 3DS and PS3, but these systems are too weak and often times it's "the 3D effect or ..."  I tried shadow of the colossus in 3d and as incredible as it looked, the frame rate became worse than the the ps2 version.  Went from 30fps to what felt like half of that.

I barely use it, mostly because it's pointless trying to keep a handheld completely still while playing it.

Ultimately yes its pretty useless but I found it to compliment a lot of Nintendo's own games very well, especially Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart.

I play with it on full-blast and really enjoy it, but I'd enjoy the game just as much with it off probably.

Well Nintendo purposely made the 3d effect non-mandatory so in essence it has to be useless.

I guess nothing in 3D left a good impression on me.   Lots of ghosting/cross-talk issues and holding it in that one tiny sweet spot the entire time with my head angled just right to see it perfectly is not a viable solution.

Perceivable Z axis is great for racing games and in 3ds's case : great for gauging distances for swings in Monster Hunter - however the 3ds was more a gateway to "not shit" 3d

Eh, I always use the 3D, doesn't bother my eyes and I appreciate how it's used in certain games.  Even subtle effects like in Virtue's Last Reward add to the scenes.  Only time I turn it off is if it effects performance of the game, like in DOA.

I still think properly done stereoscopic 3D is a game-changer but i'm beginning to accept that i'm in a small minority. I can live without the effect but in general I think it adds an extra level of immersiveness.

I'm just a novice 3D gamer but I'm liking it so far.  In shooters, the 3d effect does a really good job of showing how far away enemies are.  Like Cormac says, you just feel more immersed.

3D on current consoles is just a waste of time though.  I tried a bunch of games on the PS3 and almost all of them were blurry messes with noticeably less graphical effects.  The only games that worked decent were PS2 ports like ICO/SOTC.

Try something like Borderlands 2 or Far Cry 3 on a nice monitor and a pimp PC and I think most people would appreciate the difference, even if it didn't win them over completely like it has me. I don't get tired from it at all...can happily play for hours. I don't like the glasses but they're not a dealbreaker either.

In fact, i would like a compatible 3D TV now but only a few models seem to play nice with NVidia

Are you using the new Nvidia glasses?  I found them to be the most comfortable 3D glasses and the field of view is excellent.  Unlike most 3d glasses, I don't feel weird putting them over my prescription glasses.

no, the old ones - not much point in getting the new ones without also getting a new monitor apparently
