Yeah for an enthusiast these things are fine but they will not reach anywhere close to the mainstream if the rest of these steam boxes are near a thousand bucks.

I don't even see where they fit for enthusiasts, because they could put together something much more powerful for less.

You're basically buying form factor and low power.

I guess I'm being polite when I say "enthusiast" when I probably mean something else.  ;)

But yeah I agree. I always said I never understood the idea of a steam box unless its like 600 or 700 dollars max and then that includes a lot of caveats even in at that price. I never understood who their market is.

I mean I bought an ouya so you could ask who am I to speak but then I did that because its only $99. I don't mind a lark/lemon at that price.

Most of these new consoles/things being announced are doomed to become the next Jaguar and 32X, etc.

Aren't PC gamers on Steam unconcerned about form size or power consumption? Seems like a bad bet to make.

Doing a bit more research, it seems like Valve might just attach the Steam brand to an array of custom built PCs and let the hardware manufacturers work it out.  I don't think it was ever intended to go head to head with MS/Sony/Nintendo, and that's probably for the best considering how risky the current market is.

I have no doubt there will be a variety of steam boxes with different configurations. I just don't think any of them will significantly increase market share. For Valve though its a no lose proposition as long as they don't sink a shitload of money into it on the hardware side, because for them all it is are machines coming with steam preloaded. It's like a good bundle deal.

I think 'console competitor' is the wrong way to think about any of these new devices (including Ouya, Nvidia's Shield and GRID, Win 8 tablets, iOS stuff with Apple TV mirroring, various Android devices...). They're not aiming to own the living room because that is probably an outdated concept by now. They're just more options on an increasingly wide spectrum. There is plenty of room for business models other than world domination, although obviously not all of these will be successes (by their own terms or whatever your terms are...).

Is there even a demand for a Steambox? Valve is not going to sell it at a loss which means it will be expensive, underpowered, or a combination of the two. With only 2% of the Steam catalog being compatible with Linux it sounds like a horrible idea that is several years from being realized.

This says the low end and mid units will be cheap although I don't really understand how that is possible and it can play current games without being subsidized.

If I buy Windows 8 for $40 from the Microsoft website before the end of the month would I be able to install it on the future steambox? Looking at the Xi3 site upgrading to Windows is an extra $110, might as well grab it for $40 now, plus I'm still on Vista (not a student so no discounted Windows 7 for me) and want to upgrade anyway

The $40 Window 8 is called an upgrade though - does that mean you can't do a fresh install?

I know a guy who complained that he couldn't do a fresh install of it. Apparently he had to install Windows 7 first. I'm sure there is some kind of workaround though.

Nope

it asked for the Win8 key which came inside the upgrade package.

Actually it would be "sudo get clue" or "sudo get -a clue". If you have get mapped to apt-get.

Anyways, Linux is great. As long as you use Gnome shell. Makes Windows 7 seem like a cludgy joke (and I like W7) and W8 look like a toy.

Steambox will probably use some kind of custom DE that boots straight to Big Picture Mode, but the great thing about Linux is you can install and then choose alternative DEs when you login.
