Who isnt tired of same old, same old? Nintendo has recently milked 5 mario games in 3.5 years. While Galaxy is different from the NSMB series, it still builds on the principle that were Mario64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Unless you like waggle these games wont blow your mind. However  NSMB is definitely nintendos worst offender the last new years. They're creativity bankrupt as Mario still travels through 8 different worlds with a mini castle, and a larger castle at the end of each world. The minibosses are the tired kooplings with literally no challenge. The powerups are basically the same was it was 20 years ago. You still doing the Mario 3 theme by visiting desert, ice, lava worlds etc. The secret world is always star road.

Why the fuck is it so hard to think of something new? Has Miyamoto said that this is the formula that Nintendo should do 100 years from now? Zelda isn't too far behind either with another tired formula that hasn't changed anything from the OoT days. Majoras Mask is the only game recently that stood out that tried something new, but apparently all future success is copying OoT and let fanboys drool over another boring, more linear game with terrible motion controls. Hey  look I found 20 rupees in a chest, Yippee fucking ki-ay

No wonder this industry is so stagnant.

Nintendo primarily make games targeted at kids and most of them move on after having played a couple of games. It's cheaper and safer to just rehash old successful material than try to come up with new franchises.

Have you played Alundra, Okami, Darksiders, 3D Dot Game Heroes, or Beyond Good & Evil? There are alternatives if you feel Nintendo's games are becoming stale.

oh but sooner or later they have to. Zelda isnt doing as hot anymore, and NSMBU was apparently outsold by Luigis mansion on gamecube lol. Let them run these franchises to the ground and we'll see.

I play plenty of other games. Dark Souls is a better Zelda that is released in the last 10 years.

Wind Waker and Skyward Sword were pretty different Zelda games, in fact SS is one of the most different in the series. Problem is, it's different in several ways that are not better, and indeed worse.

NSMB gets milked since the Wii and DS games are both approaching 30 million copies sold each.

SMG is an absolutely amazing game.

What is the point of this thread.

I don't know what the latest numbers on Skyward Sword are, but it sold about 3.5 million worldwide within it's first month of release. NSMBU is in a whole different situation entirely, thanks to being saddled with the abysmal situation of the Wii U. NSMB2 on the 3DS is over 3 million sold.

the point is that you need to take of your rose colored glasses. And skyward sword different? Well you're right it seems it has an even more empty overworld and more linear game than ever  ::)

Yes, it's pretty different from the rest of the games in the series. Detailing why to you specifically would probably be a waste of time, though.

Or the fact that NSMB2 had just came out like 4 months earlier and plays exactly the same as NSMBU.

What exactly do you want from Mario? I can understand disliking the world similarities but gameplay wise, what can they do? It's a platformer, everyone agrees SMG was amazing. They should do something like that again with some new gimmick.

I agree on Zelda though. It needs to be less linear, harder, and offer more shit to do. It's crazy that the handheld games (especially the Oracles and LA) feature more true variety than the console versions. Give people a big ass world they can actually influence, interesting side quests, mini dungeons, and puzzles/traps that are actually challenging. Nintendo has shown they can do dungeons very well with Zelda recently, so that's not really my concern.

It doesn't have to be Skyrim, but I'd love for a Zelda where Hyrule feels like an actual place you can explore - and rewards you for exploring. Maybe you find a randomized mini dungeon, or a town person asks you to save his wife from bandits hidden deep in the woods, or you discover some crazy gauntlet challenge under a lake, etc.

I never played Skyward Sword for any length so I don't care to weigh in on that, and I can agree about New Super Mario Bros. With the latter, they at the very least need to try for a new aesthetic and power ups. However, I think you're taking crazy pills if you think 3D Mario is stale after the Galaxy games.

But they're fantastic 3D platformers, that -- the direct Galaxy 2 sequel aside -- release very infrequently. Galaxy came out in 2007. The last game before that, Mario Sunshine, came out in 2002. Galaxy 2 was released in 2010. So, three games over an eight year span.

What exactly are you suggesting they do with 3D Mario?

I can't see how the Galaxies are similar to 64 outside of the protagonist and the fact that you collect stars.  The way you progress in a level, they way you TRAVERSE the levels, and the option you have for moving and the gameplay of the platforming in the Galaxies is so far and away different from 64.

You wanna knock a Mario game for being not different enough, knock Sunshine.  It was literally 64 with a worse camera and a water pump.

:rofl

OK, then look at Mario 3D Land. That's the most different Mario platformer in the series (2D or 3D), and surprise, it was their most recent 3D one.

In 2005, SantaC and Robertsan were trolling GAF with their chiseled good looks and clubbing it up with loads of gorgeous Swedish women, doing the equivalent of "u mad i'm stylin on u?" before the meme hit.

In 2013, SantaC writes shitty trolls on a GAF reject board.

It kind of reminds me of the "Faces of Meth" except in internet form.

I kind of like the idea that you should only play one Zelda game and one Mario game, then move on. That's what I've done so far...enjoyed them fine but have no desire whatsoever to play another version when there is so much other entertainment out there

If you think it is some great tragedy that Nintendo can't give you more wondrous experiences, well, maybe it is. But that's the market and they're a business, not a dream factory

I thought Nintendo works by targeting successive new waves of kids. Sure there are the older gamers who still play Nintendo games and complain about them, but as you can see, they still buy their products.

I haven't played a Mario since Sunshine or a Zelda since Zelda 64, so I dunno. Never played a pokemon game ever.

cool breeze

  • Senior Member
It's not that bad when you compare it to the industry as a whole.  Something like a Halo 4 or Uncharted 3 is as safe and boring as what Nintendo does.  Maybe it's a time thing, since Zelda to Zelda to Zelda is a 4 and then 5 year gap, so you'd expect greater change.

Mario Kart is the confusing nintendo series in this regard.  Each game drops and replaces the main gimmick of one before it, but the rest is the same.  Diddy Kong Racing and CTR had adventure modes to give the single player some substance.  The recent Sega kart racers had interesting progressions systems too.  Closest Mario Kart came to were those missions from the DS game, and again, it was dropped for the followup.  We'll see if the Wii U Mario Kart will keep the gliding and driving underwater.

mario kart is still the most fun party nintendo game though.  all they have to do is add some new-fangled item and its still gold.  even if the track designs are awful (wii version), shit's still fun.
