The worst thing to happen to Nintendo is Sega going third party
« on: January 20, 2013, 02:56:21 AM »
Think about it, when did Nintendo stop really innovating and actually trying?  IMO it is when they lost their competition for making kiddy games like mario and zelda.  Once pokemon hit Sega just gave up.  IMO that woudl explain the lack of innovation from Pokemon games.  Hopefully this gen will be a kick in the nuts that Nintendo needs to atleast make more adult oriented games.  Hopefully Apple can steal the kiddy market from Nintendo, Nintendo buy out/merge/partner with Nokia or something.

Nintendo stopped trying when they realized they could sell tens of millions of copies of half assed software like Pokemon and New Super Mario Bros.

It's because they are constantly shit. The other companies, while shit in their own rights, pushes out a turd that doesnt stink as much occasionally.

A bit late, they are in bed with MS. And even then, don't see why would the Finnish team up with Nintendo. And oh, Nokia doesn't even exist in Japan.

Nintendo though, should really go with Toshiba/Fujitsu and do a phone already. The mobile market is too huge to ignore.

On the threads list I count:

- 2 Nintendo hate threads by SantaC and Damian.
- 1.5 3DS threads by demi (VLR thread doubles as Vita thread.)
- The MH3U thread I made.
- Fire Emblem demo thread by Himuro.
- And the general Wii U thread by Borys.

Out of 40 threads. Yeah, total spammage.

How many are there even. 2 posters (Andy + BrandNew)? Nintendosbooger is inactive. I am not a certified ninthing so I cannot help them.

fryinghigh comes off as vaguely Nintendo friendly to me, but not a fanboy. lunchwithyuzo left after like 10 minutes. I wouldn't even really call BrandNew or myself fanboys in the typical sense. We just stand out because we don't outright hate them like the rest of ya.

Gamecube yes but i see that more of a transition period to making shitty software.  Wii i disagree.  Nintendo made shitty games with with their main dev houses on teh wii.  Stuff like Metroid Prime Corruption, DKCR, Xenoblade chronicles were made by secondary dev houses.

NSMBU is the best NSMB game out there but it is solidly B level at best.

I hope they have some different ideas for NSMB3/NSMBU2.  They've pretty much reused everything from Mario 3 at this point except for I guess the power up where you're in the boot.

I guess we know now what the amazing innovative change in the next NSMB is going to be!

You are kiddign right?  They will jsut remake the tanooki suit like they have done before.  The most innovative mario game in the last 10 years is probably 3dland.(i am fully aware that it was most blatant in that game).

You can say what you want about them, but Monolith Soft and Retro are both wholly-owned subsidiaries of Nintendo [i.e. first-party studios]. And Super Mario Galaxy.

Yes. It's definitely better than the NES games IMO, looking at it purely at the different elements. SMB3 is of course more than the sum of its parts and has a healthy nostalgia distortion field around it, though.

I don't necessarily think suggesting "nostalgia" paints a fair picture. I think you're focusing on mechanical polish and level design, which is fine. However, New Super Mario Bros. U has the benefit 14 years of technological and game design advancement. In 1989, Super Mario Bros. 3 was a major event that felt like something brand new. The overworld, different level designs, unique suit ideas, and a lot more content in terms of levels. The problem NSMBU faces is that -- at first glance -- it just feels like more New Super Mario Bros. This is our fourth trip down this road since what, Aught Five or Six? In that light, the fact that this one is pretty good can understandably seem secondary to series fatigue.

SMB3 was never that good, the original SMB is still awesome though.

What?

I don't even know where to stand on the SMB3 vs. SMW debate. Could do 3 w/o warping and cleared all 96 gates in SMW twice so ??? They both have their merits, damnit! Gun to my head I guess I'd pick 3 cause look at all them different and never before seen power ups, that hadn't really happened before and hasn't since.

I don't see how Sega going third party had any effect on Nintendo's output. Sega was the least of Nintendo's worries when Sony became a juggernaut with the PSX and Sega was struggling to decide on which new release they were actually going to promote as their main console till the Dreamcast.

Its easy to realize why Nintendo doesn't make games that I like anymore, they had to take a risk with the Wii that involved catering to people who don't usually play videogames, it worked so they focused on that audience for a while. They found out that just reskinning a game or just rereleasing it makes them a lot of dough, so they kept doing that. Now with smartphones taking over a lot of the audience Nintendo successfully brought in last gen and with a lot of the hardcore moving on to either the HD twins or superior master race PC gaming on Steam Nintendo is very lost on what to do. They don't want to start developing for smart phones, they were very late to the party on HD so now they need to learn the ropes to that, they don't have an idea that took over to become a pop culture phenomenon like the Wiimote, they have always downplayed online gamings importance which has grown so big they can't ignore it anymore, and their heavy reliance on key franchises has started to make em feel stagnate and over saturated.

Its just Nintendo's stubbornness coming back to bite them in the ass in more ways than one. Whatever sure thing they had before(handhelds, non-gamers, kid games, etc.) has been taken away so they really need to either catch up, become a niche or take another huge risk in hopes of it succeeding. I don't think Nintendo can come back from this but I could be wrong.

It is because both Nintendo and Sega to a lesser degree catered to the same demographic.  Now Nintnedo has a monopoly on the kids market.

I really think you had to be there and aware to really get SMB3's impact.

yup; kids should try playing one of the countless other nes platformers to appreciate just how huge, varied, and polished smb3 was at the time. even its art style was distinct because it was so clean and creative. the themed worlds, the memorable power-ups, the fantastic one-off levels (the boot, the fortress of coins & bricks, the giant level, the one where you had to run on killer plants while grabbing stars, and on and on...).  the game just blew everything other home console platformer out of the water. not to mention how huge the hype was - THE WIZARD, people!
