I want to have my start/metro screen just have a few tiles, but really big ones. Seems there are only two sizes. I tried googling but no banana.

I know the defenders will chide people in here, but I had the exact same experience with Metro. I immediately wanted to customize it and it was not really user-friendly on how to do it.

Yes there are only two sizes of tiles

There are third-party tools that let you set your own background, here's one -> http://www.stardock.com/products/decor8/ , probably if you googled you could find others

No idea about image properties, PERSONALLY I would strongly resist any addition that risks inviting the dread scourge of CONTEXT MENU BLOAT. which reminds me of one of MY gripes, why the heck is there an "Open Link" option in the context menu when you can just friggin left click

I rarely even look at the start screen on a non-touch setup. My HTPC is desktop 95% of the time. I mean I used the steam pin app to populate a start screen with neat game tiles- but I pin everything I really use to the desktop taskbar, and use the desktop almost exclusively. Now on my Surface, that's different- primarily because RT having a desktop is LOLLLLL anyway wtf you gonna do there cept get to things in a way that you remember how and are too lazy to learn the new way.

I was like that when I first started using Windows 8 on my laptop, but I've gradually shifted towards using the new apps and start screen most of the time other than when programming / writing / file management ... or rather, I use the new stuff for most "dicking around" activities and the desktop for most "focused work towards a defined extended task" activities, that way I don't have to mess with window management or closing apps / resource management when in dicking around mode, and those apps don't clutter my desktop / consume resources / etc

Andrex srsly I wouldnt install linux if it came with a blowjob.

If you want o play games on your pc you have windows. W8 has great performance and boots up super fast theres just some lil thinga that always piss me off. If these get fixed it will be a very good os. Its no way near as bad as vista was at launch.

I really hope you're just riling Andy up. I seriously can't think of any major infrastructure that runs on Windows Server, let alone any major sites that use IIS (Having said that, Server 2012 looks pretty cool.)

Meh. I'm sure Microsoft has some Macs, and Apple has some Windows-running machines. At this point, I still prefer my Mac but I'm not religious about it. I enjoy how integrated and consistent things are, but I also like how much software is available on Windows. Five years ago, I installed Linux once and enjoyed dicking around in it, but it required effort to learn, and there was not a lot of stuff available at that time.

It should be, but I also encounter shops using Excel as a database; not a front end for a database, but actually using it instead of a db, even when several people need to touch the file several times a day. I've encountered people rolling their own bug system out when it could be addressed by a free OSS solution. I've seen Excel used as a page layout application for a game design document...

I worked at one of those companies, 50 people had to access one Excel 'Masterfile', shit was always broken. Onetime it got deleted or its content did. Hilarious.
