lol

I've been doing this for months already with a $50 Roku box, don't even need to bother stringing a cable all the way to the living room, either. Or bother with switching outputs on my PC.

I know where Rahx is coming from.  I hate that I have to resort to hooking up my PC to play .MKVs.

But I've only tried subtitled .MKV streaming methods using the PS3 and 360 (they suck for this) and using XBMC via hacked Apple TV.  XBMC worked decently for a bit, then just sucked after an update.  I can actually stream subbed .MKVs to my iPhone with little problems, which I find funny.

Fortunately, however, at this point most stuff also gets released in .MP4 format.  I don't even bother streaming anymore and instead just download all the stuff I want watch, throw 'em onto a flash drive, and copy the video files to my PS3.

And you don't have to tell me shit. Like I even said in that thread, I have my computer hooked up to my tv.

But when I want to watch something from my computer in the tv room...

...I have to lug my desktop up there. Is it a big deal? No, but maybe you can see(don't know crappy cellphone pictures) I only have my PS3 hooked up to the tv because well the PS3 is the home media device that supposedly does everything except stream mkv files.

I doubt  a great majority of people have a computer hooked up in their main tv room? Maybe they do, but I doubt it. You say just use a laptap. Sure well froget the part that maybe I'd want my laptap on hand while I watch the episode of say Damages Season 5 that my family wanted me to download and stream for them. I don't think it's that unheard of using a device like that while I watch tv.

The point is, consoles are trying to be the this all in one media device. It would be pretty convient to have the PS3 just stream mkv files. I wouldn't have to unhook my computer and hook it upstairs all the time and my family would got more use out of the PS3 because they could just stream stuff from their computers.

So use a smartphone, tablet, or any other device that would let you do that?  Or do this crazy thing and actually just sit there and watch what's playing for a bit?

Damages?  Wouldn't a show like that be up on Hulu, Netflix, or whatever to watch?

IIRC .MKVs are not an officially supported format or recognized standard like .AVIs, .MOVs, .WMVs, .MP4s, etc. are.

You could always shell out $50 for a Roku player- I don't think you can stream .MKVs to those either, but IIRC you can hook up a hard drive or flash drive and watch them via a USB connection.

And again...why are you downloading .MKVs of everything?  Have you looked for other formats?  Do you know there are programs you can use to convert .MKVs to other formats out there too?

The Roku streams MKV with subtitles just fine, I've been tearing through lots of stuff lately.

If you have air video you can stream just about anything to the Apple TV through your iphone/iPad with AirPlay. I use it all the time. I have not tried mkvs with subs though.

Well I mean yeah when I'm watching something new I actually pay attention. I don't actually have a laptap, if I did I would actually just hook that up to a tv. I also don't have a tablet because well I don't need one. My sister does(my ipad that I gave her) and yeah I see that you could easily use that I suppose. Either way I read a lot and like to have background noise on, so sometimes I just like to throw something on the tv and well I'm not going to bring up my computer for simple relaxing time like that you know?

I didn't know that.

Great Rambler mentioned this. I've thought about it, but just haven't gone out and bought one.

Because thats what most torrent's seem to be. I just get whatever the torrent gives me and well like I said, it's no big deal to just bring my computer upstairs. So no real point converting mkv files. Plus I already have my computer hooked up to my own tv.

I just thought it would be far simpler if my PS3 could play mkv files.

It would be simpler, but it's not going to happen.  And I wouldn't bank on the next round of consoles supporting .MKV either.

Ah sorry.

And yeah, I wouldn't expect native support for mkv on consoles.  It didn't happen with the ps3and that was probably the best chance.

as far as I know, these players "roku, wd media' and the like, do not support 10 bit h.264 which is now....every subbed animu ever.

dedicated media players like wd media player, gives better picture/processing than my PC/media player classic. I don't know why, but they do to my eyes. but again, since they do not support the latest shit the animu group always love to throw in their mkvs, they are useless to me.

I'm watching brand new anime released within the last week on my Roku, bro. Even Bluray rips, runs just fine. Some weird, random codecs have problems sometimes with regards to subtitles, but I haven't seen anything yet that just plain won't play at all. It even runs Flash files.

Oh yeah?  Which model do you have?  Would love to ditch this crappy Apple TV and replace it with one.

The cheapest: Roku HD.

I bought one of those stupid Android HDMI sticks and installed XBMC because I couldn't be assed to plug in my laptop to my TV.
