But, but, I had an idea guys, it was great in my head.
If that's all you're dealing with, you've got one of the non-shit Marketing Types.
The crap ones will, as described, have a full marketing campaign worked up, but not tell anyone from whom they need assets, and somehow forget about this until the week they need them. Sometimes the very same day they need them. Their attitude in demanding or requesting the assets is nearly inconsequential -- there is always a substantial sum of money attached with not meeting this impending deadline, and if it's not met, it's on the developer for missing it. The marketing person will make sure the CEO, CFO, and anyone else knows that -- IGNORING END OF PROJECT CRUNCH -- you were unable to provide them with what they needed.
The best project managers KNOW THIS, and bring Marketing in early, to let them know what the game is about, what is interesting about it, and are proactive in setting a schedule for what materials the marketing department will need. I accept this as necessary, but it feels like I am doing a part of their job for them. Without fail, if I ask them to deliver this list on their own, it will not arrive; it's something they have to be walked through.
I do believe there are competent Marketers out there, I just know I have never worked with them.
