Let's Replay Old Games! [Week ??: Planescape: Torment]
« on: January 24, 2013, 11:31:01 PM »
This is a thread were we replay and talk about old games because I said so. Got a problem with what games I pick? Screw you. Anyway, let's all have fun!

WEEK 1 - XENOGEARS

Director: Tetsuya Takahashi [Xenosaga 1&3, Xenoblade]
Producer: Hiromichi Tamaka [Secret of Mana, Threads of Fate, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy MMOs]
Writers: Tetsuya Takahashi, Kaori Tanaka [Final Fantasy VI, Xenosaga, Soma Bringer], and Masato Kato [Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Cross, Baten Kaitos]
Music: Yasunori Mitsuda [Chrono Cross, Xenosaga, Soma Bringer]

Developed by: Squaresoft Product Development Division 3 [Threads of Fate, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy MMOs]
Release: February 11, 1998 [Japan] and October 20, 1998 [North America].
Platform: Playstation 1

What you should know before playing: Xenogears has the best story since the renaissance [even though it's mainly a ripoff of Neon Genesis Evangelion].

Enjoy!

I really liked Xenogears when I was a teenager.

I will still give it points for the story because it was ambitious.

But that gameplay...it's definitely no Chrono Trigger in timelessness. Which is a shame, because I think it could be if it were fully 2d.

I remember replaying it a few years ago, and thinking "whoa, this is still a really good game! What exactly soured my experience a decade ago?"... and then I started disc 2 and was like, ohhhhh.

What can i play this on?

My ps1 died years ago.

You can get it from the US PSN Store. Picking an 80 hour RPG for a let's play seems a bit absurd, but at least most people will quit before the really bad parts. I played it on an emulator with frame skipping to save some time.

My PS3 died too years ago.

This also reminds me that I hate Sony for not sending me a BC model back for two months (they were out) and then me just deciding to get store credit.

Here is gameplay. look at this shit. Shit camera. Fucking platforming bullshit. Battle system is one of the saving graces and it's not that hot.

Game just isn't that good anymore.

Well, when I was a teenager I loved it. I'd rather do a LET'S REPLAY OLD GAMES! thing of Musashiden. Deffo the superior 1998 Squaresoft rpg. love that game, it's still hot. Xenogears in comparison is like going through a time portal. You pick up a bottle of wine, 1998 vintage, pour a glass, and it's vinegar.

Put it this way, I'd rather replay Chrono Cross than Xenogears. Considering the fact CC has a pretty good difficulty bump, it'd certainly be all the funner.

I played it like 6 years ago and loved it! haven't tried the sequel.

Xenogears I could never get into this game, didn't make it past the first disc when I tried to play it, I support himu with Chrono Cross.

I saw that thread about Musashiden over at GAF and was thinking how that might be a good game for me to replay. I don't really remember that much shit about it. The game was my brother's so I don't have a copy anymore after we both moved out, so I'd have to track down a copy for myself...

will do! I love replaying my old game because 1) they're still usually fun and 2) old-school A+ games are better than C+ modern games

Back when I had Xenogears in the 1999 or 2000, I didn't actually play it myself. Instead, I watched my brother play through the whole thing. I remember that the story was basically so far above my head as to be nonsensical [though I suppose that's still true, actually], but it was kinda compelling because of that. Also, it had implied sex, which was a pretty new thing coming off of years of Sega and Nintendo gaming.

The one memory that really sticks out was the embarrassment of watching that ending scene where everybody's naked. :lol

i started it a few weeks ago and got distracted from it by a ton of other games.

why is that people who pilot mechs are always whiny folks who are afraid of their power?   Aren't there any guys who thinks its cool after they remember how good of a mech pilot they are?

If you want a cool guy who knows that piloting a giant robot is cool, you should watch Big O.

Edit: Rather than have this thread devolve into mecha anime talk, I'll do a cross-post in the anime thread with some additional stuff.

Xenogear's intro is pretty weird.

-Opening scene that has barely anything to do with the rest of the game
-Then 10 pages of backstory
-Then the main character is in a mech fight
-Then it cuts back to earlier in the game where you're getting ready for that girl's wedding

Also, Fei's impressionist paintings are pretty good, but they're never gonna make it into the Louvre.

I got about 10 or so hours into on a replay a year or two ago, but it tends to find itself low in the priority list in light of the many new and backlog titles that I'm trying to work on.

I found this game painful to get through the first time I played it.  It seemed to me that most of the appeal for Xenogears lied in the fact that for a few years, it was near impossible to find a copy for less than $80-90.  Then Square/Sony had to up and re-release it as a Greatest Hits title, eliminating a lot of its appeal.

naw, had its fanbase even when it came out. the rarity increased the prestige, definitely, but no less than it did for Suikoden 2 and Final Fantasy Tactics. Xenogears was regarded due to its extremely ballsy and what the fuck story, which when you're a teenager, is a highly appealing aspect. Even negating what you think about Xenogears' story, if it's anything, it's ambitious, what with thousands of year in timeline and plot progression. I still am attached to the core of the story: a love story spanning a millennia since the creation of the Earth itself as two souls are reincarnated again and again, but are constantly fated to never be able to act on their feelings without heartache, death, and blood. That's awesome.

Ask any XG fan and the reason they'll tell you they like it is the story. I'd not mind replaying it with cheats for that reason.
