I knew this would migrate over here soon enough.

Saints Row won't ever challenge GTA because of the brand of GTA. It's the king of the genre. Removing dildo's and such and making the series more grounded might have a small impact on sales but it would probably be minimal.

I know people on xbox live who wouldn't buy Saints Row simply because its not GTA. The fact that its kinda silly wasn't necessarily what turned them off. What turned them off was it wasn't GTA.

The Call of Duty clones have a similar problem.

Now I probably wouldn't make the dildo the centerpiece of a marketing program but I don't think the right approach for SR3 is to get more gritty ala Heat or Training Day. I think Saints Row 3 was the first one where they got the tone mostly right.

That's exactly the point that needs to be emphasized here. CliffyB is making this arbitrary black-and-white separation that an open-world game is either a juvenile sex comedy or a super-serious, grim-dark crime drama. I think most people agree that toning down some of the juvenile humor wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing for Saints Row, but keeping that over-the-top humor and absolutely insane set pieces is the top priority for a sequel. In other words: shut up, CliffyB.

The problem is, he is arguing as if perfect tone is easy to achieve and then guarantee's perfect sales especially in a crowded market. It's a lot more complicated than that.

Look at something like Bulletstorm which he was somewhat involved with and sold poorly. Should he have made that more like Call of Duty or Gears of War? Would it have sold better? Why did it ship with the tone it shipped with?

I like bulletstorm for what its worth but It's always easy to look at what somebody else did and then pick out the perceived flaws. It's much harder when you are working on it yourself and trying to differentiate yourself in the market.

Saint's Row is the funny, wacky GTA kinda game to the casual market. That's not going to appeal to everybody but that's probably a better identity than just being a straight GTA clone at this point.

initially I thought he said "Make an open world game that's more than Michael Mann/Heat/Collateral/Training Day," like, to set it apart from the other open world games. I thought that's what saint's row the third did well and the direction to take it.

I wouldn't mind it if saint's row lost dildo bats or fecal spraying trucks or whatever. Now, gimp rickshaw chases are another story.

really, though, the best parts of saint's row 3 weren't the cruder moments people point to. focusing on those parts undermines the wit of the people making the game.

The difference between Saints Row and GTA is diversity in the medium, a clear choice, even if I don't agree with everything that both games do. Getting rid of that difference and making them both be the same doesn't equate to industry maturity, more like the exact opposite. There's plenty of room in the industry for both, just like there's plenty of room in the movie industry for Oscar-bait and the latest Michael Bay blockbuster. So, I really don't understand where CliffyB is coming from at all here. I mean, it's fine if he doesn't like the game or what the game decided it wants to be, that's his opinion to have it he wants to have it, but his authoritative tone is bothersome.
