If you check the source article, it's pretty vague.

Quote
Asked directly if drones have already been deployed, Riverside Police Chief Sergio Diaz, who is jointly leading the task force, said: “We are using all the tools at our disposal.”

The use of drones was later confirmed by Customs and Border Patrol spokesman Ralph DeSio, who revealed agents have been prepared for Dorner to make a dash for the Mexican border since his rampage began.

He said: “This agency has been at the forefront of domestic use of drones by law enforcement. That’s all I can say at the moment.”

So it's not absolutely clear whether they're using drones or what they'd be using them for, or if this is unprecedented at all.

drones can be used for lots of things, they're probably just trying to find him with them.

...cause they're not confident enough it'll shoot the right guy, which is important in the U.S., but not important in the mid-east  :roll

but otherwise, drones are cool.  we'll all be using them for all kinds of shit in the future...

2011
Janke knew the gunmen could be anywhere on the 3,000-acre spread in eastern North Dakota. Fearful of an armed standoff, he called in reinforcements from the state Highway Patrol, a regional SWAT team, a bomb squad, ambulances and deputy sheriffs from three other counties.

He also called in a Predator B drone.

As the unmanned aircraft circled 2 miles overhead the next morning, sophisticated sensors under the nose helped pinpoint the three suspects and showed they were unarmed. Police rushed in and made the first known arrests of U.S. citizens with help from a Predator, the spy drone that has helped revolutionize modern warfare.

something just hit me, is the predator drone called that in reference to the movie?  it must be since it uses thermal imaging. I always thought it was just some lame generic name.

Idea for a new TV show: A Predator to Catch a Predator. In this reality show, adult women on the internet will impersonate underage girls to lure men to an open field for "sexual liaisons." Men lured there will be confronted by a MQ-1 Predator controlled by Chris Hansen, who will question them. If Hansen receives unsatisfactory answers, at them he will fire several skin melting Hellfire missiles.

I'll wait for Predator to Catch a Predator to catch a Predator.   The Predator uses a Predator to find the Predator + underage girl, then he runs to where they are, quickly undoes his cloak camo, and screams in the guy's face.  The guy runs away or passes out in fear.  Then the Predator says in a perfect American accent with a deep male voice "well, I guess we learned who the Predator and the prey really are!"  and everyone starts laughing and goes out for drinks after.  They have a weekly vote on whether the guy they catch runs away or passes out in fear.

Welp, they've authorized drones for the lapd killer.  Not sure how I feel about this...

Apart from the fact that this news story was bunk, that drones have already been used for domestic surveillance as per Malek, and we can all agree that the idea of weaponizing drones for domestic purposes would be absolutely unacceptable.....it's time for a bit of devil's advocate.

Pretty much every big city police force already makes use of police helicopters, to assist in surveillance, track fugitives, offer support/intel to officers on the ground, participate in search and rescue, etc.  And nobody has any issues with that.

So what is the difference between an aircraft conducting those roles with a pilot inside it, versus an aircraft that has a pilot controlling it from the ground?  Why is it that we're supposed to encourage efficiencies in most  human endeavours, but we should prevent law enforcement from utilizing efficient technologies?  Especially in times of fiscal restraint when departments are facing unprecedented budgetary constraints.

I think there's a place for drones in domestic law enforcement as long as there are some clear policies that can be developed governing and limiting their use.

Well, it allows people to kill at no physical risk to themselves. That's a very very scary prospect (for the citizenry, obviously - it's great for cops). That might actually make drones safer, I don't know (no self-defense motivated killings...) but it FEELS scarier. And also cold and indifferent and amoral. I think there is a lot of irrationality working against use of drones right now, basically.

Perhaps, but as per Malek's article, the drone allowed  officers executing a warrant to lower their risk assessment, which is the sort of support that could reduce instances of itchy trigger fingers in such tense situations.

I don't think people would be nearly as freaked out except ~99% of the time they've heard about drones over the last decade has been about them being used to kill, and usually in the context of the lack of due process or judicial checks involved.  So it's bringing up all sorts of scary associations even if it's essentially being used the same way as a police helicopter (I swear I was gonna make that comparison myself).

Anyway, drones are big and visible and I'd imagine somewhat loud.  If we're worried about a sprawling surveillance state, I'd be more worried about the wiretaps, GPS tracking, online monitoring, and other potential spying tools that you'd never know about.

this is false.  something like the predator or one of the numerous smaller ones can operate at altitudes that mask or eliminate entirely any sort of audible cue.  combining this with their paint job which is specifically designed to blend into the backdrop of the sky (think fish) and you have something that is pretty damn covert.  Hell even Apaches are able to sneak up on targets and are able to watch them for long periods of time before the decision is made to place 30mm on their position.

No he's fucked. The FAA just put flight restrictions around the area to get the news copters away. One apparently got too close to the SWAT helicopter and the cops got pissed. They said they have snipers set around the cabin with armored vehicles coming in.
